Why hasn't A-Rod denied it?

Am I the only person wondering why A-Rod hasn't denied the allegations that Jose Canseco introduced him to a steroid dealer? If I were accused of doing something that I did not do I would say “I didn’t do it,” not, "I really have absolutely no reaction." No reaction? You have no reaction to a someone saying they introduced you to a steroid dealer? Really?!? To me, that’s a very strange way to respond.

Wednesday, Rodriguez told reporters "It's over as far as I'm concerned, no further comment on the matter. I'm just excited to be playing baseball," again, no denials.

On last night's “Nightline,” Canseco said, "Let's see how Alex reacts. Let's see if they all call me a liar again. How's that for you? Let's see if all of a sudden they're going to call me a liar again."

Well everyone is calling Canseco a liar, everyone besides Alex Rodriguez.

I am confused as to why you feel that he should deny it, because you want him to say so. The guy has been tested a number of times over the past five to seven years, his numbers have never exploded, but been consistent without the spike that steroid users usually have.
By the simple fact that Cansucko stated that he hated A-Rod's f*%$@#ing guts should give you more than enough reason to realize that Cansucko, while he may have given him the name of a steroid dealer does not mean that A-Rod took steroids.
I feel that he does not have to acknowledge it at all.

I don't really doubt that Ole' Jose introduced him to someone. I mean, if they're in the same circles it could happen really easily. Just being introduced doesn't mean anything though.

In any case, I'm done with steroids. Test everyone now and let sleeping dogs lie.

I agree with the big wags, test everyone now, what is past is past. But force Cansucko to provide this "proof" he says he has.

Yep, you're probably the only one silly enough to be wondering that.

What would you do if someone accused you of something you did not do?

It's not because I want him to say so, it's because I'd like him to look innocent, and defend himself.

"The guy has been tested a number of times over the past five to seven years, his numbers have never exploded, but been consistent without the spike that steroid users usually have."

Did you not read the part where I said if he met with the dealer, it didn't mean he cheated, or did you miss that?

"By the simple fact that Cansucko stated that he hated A-Rod's f*%$@#ing guts should give you more than enough reason to realize that Cansucko, while he may have given him the name of a steroid dealer does not mean that A-Rod took steroids."

For the second time - I never said he did use steroids. I'm saying that maybe Canseco did introduce him to the dealer, maybe people should realize this before disagreeing with me and then suggest the same exact thing I'm saying.

Wags, I also think everyone should be tested.

One questions: why the heck is the fantasy draft at 9:45 AM on Sunday.

some people you just dont give the pleasure of even responding to... arod is responding perfectly here.. canseco has nothing but speculation on the guy, theres nothing TO comment about.

Greg Cohen said...

I don't agree. Canseco has been right about almost everyone he's mentioned. I also believe him about people like Ivan Rodriguez, who may not have been in the Mitchell Report, but were obvious cheaters. When a player loses 15-20 lbs of muscle in the offseason it should tell you something.

Yankees fans just don't want to give Canseco any credit. If he had said David Ortiz used steroids or met a steroid dealer, we all would be like "See I knew he cheated."

I think the burden of proof is on the accuser. Even if Canseco did introduce A-Rod to dealers it does not mean he actually purchased or used the stuff. In fact, even if A-Rod tried it but stopped, I can't damn him for it. As long as he's clean and has remained clean, I think A-Rod should be left alone. This whole steroid thing is a nightmare. It has achieved a life of it's own that no one has the guts to put to bed. MLB should do what the NFL does- act swiftly, act decicively, and put it behind them. Not get Congress involved. It's a cancer on MLB that needs to be eradicated quickly.

#1, I don't believe A-Rod was ever a teammate of Canseco's.

#2, because why should he help Canseco? You know what happens if he vehemently denies it? Everyone runs to Canseco for comment, he fires back, everyone runs back to A-Rod, everyone runs to his teammates, it's a huge distraction, Canseco sells a bunch more copies of his book, etc.

Greg Cohen said...

Mark,

I don't think, nor am I saying, A-Rod used steroids. All I'm suggesting is that it's possible what Canseco is saying about introducing A-Rod to a steroid dealer may be true.

As far as the steroid situation being a "cancer" and a "nightmare" I agree completely.

Kyle,

You're right they weren't teammates, my mistake. They were supposedly work-out buddies down in Miami.

Everyone is running to Canseco for a comment anyway. A-Rod can only help himself with a denial. And it's a huge distraction anyway. Why are we pretending that by ignoring this it will somehow go away? Well, I hate to break it to you, but it won't.

Ross said...

Why should he lend credibility to Jose by denying? Best to ignore him and hope he fades back into obscurity.

Greg Cohen said...

How does denying the allegations lend any credibility to Canseco? If anything it makes Canseco look worse.

I think he made Canseco look more credible by responding with essentially a no comment.

Unknown said...

Because the second he denies it, Canseco will cause more controversy by producing circumstantial amazingly coincidential evidence, much like McNamee's saved garbage for 8 years...

Listen, Yes, I agree that Canseco and A-Rod were close at one point, Yes, I believe he coveted his wife, and Yes, I do believe he introduced him to his steroid dealer, Ill even go as far as to say that A-Rod called the guy, worked out with him, asked him about juice, got the info, got a quote, almost wrote a check, and chickened out last minute. That's what I envision. That sounds like textbook young A-Rod to me...

But regardless of the truth of the matter, commenting positively or negatively is going to draw any or all attention away from his playing the game of baseball on a level that he's grown used to. Therefore, I think he is doing the right thing by just ignoring the SOB. Since there is no way Canseco can prove the deed was done. It causes too much unnecessary print, posting and ranting. Case in point, look at all the comments in this thread. Imagine all the frenzy if he said Canseco is a liar and Canseco produced phone numbers and other crap.

Then it becomes, why did he call him, did he do it, why didnt he do it, what changed his mind, why did he cheat, how much did he ask about...

Not to mention the world wide manhunt for this "Max" fella.

March 30th baby. Its all about AB's... thats the goal here.

You wanna worry about steroids? Wait till you see Pettite's first start in Fenway...

Who cares if Canseco causes more controversy; if you're innocent, you're innocent. The problem with Clemens is that McNamee can prove he wasn't innocent. I think the only reason A-Rod didn't deny this is because he knows that Canseco could prove that he's guilty - at least of asking about roids, and meeting this "Max" character.

"But regardless of the truth of the matter, commenting positively or negatively is going to draw any or all attention away from his playing the game of baseball on a level that he's grown used to. All the attention is going to be on him for this anyway, you know that. The uneccessary print, posting, ranting, and comments will continue regardless, you know that too.

The only time I would worry about "evidence" is if I'm guilty. My point of this post was that I felt due to his response that maybe what Canseco is saying is true, which you said you think it is as well.

If Rodriguez is in fact innocent why not just say "I didn't do it. Now let's move on"? That can't hurt him if he's innocent.

You guys are crazy, Greg is absolutely right. There is no harm in denying something you did not do. And I too don't understand why he didn't.

Some of you need to take your rose colored Yankee-glasses off.

Greg Cohen said...

Thanks Patrick.

Unknown said...

Well we know he didnt do it, cause he's been tested numerous times and he still embarasses pitchers nightly. So him reiterating isnt necessary, it just fuels Canseco's fire. But I understand Greg, its easy to just say no, but you have to understand the volatility of Canseco at this point too.. He's ready to keep churning up his name at any chance he gets.. no press is bad press when you've got a book coming out, or reality tv show, or screenplay, or whathaveyou...

And please do not mask my argument as Yankee bias.. you know I know better than that. It's just what happens in the media. The best way to dissolve a situation is to not talk about it, the U.S. Government patented this.

Greg Cohen said...

I understand what you're saying, but if it's me, I'm coming right out and saying "I didn't do it." And Canseco wants to continue to slander me, I'll continue to deny it. It's not like the media is going to stop talking about this anyway.

I didn't saying your argument was based on Yankee bias. I just said that some of you would accept what Canseco said as truth had it had been about David Ortiz.

Unknown said...

Well, I would've listened closely instead of rolling my eyes, yes, but based on the facts and what kinda dirt canseco had on him, (setting aside Ortiz' sudden explosion from mediocrity in Minneapolis to dominance in Boston, hehe. And A-Rod has been damn consistent as far as growth), I would have to dismiss it as well because there's nothing concrete.

But I dont know if you know the power of the media as far as leaving a situation alone if theres nothing new to add.. If A-Rod shuts up the media by issuing no comment, most people arent gonna ask him about it again. Until it comes up again with some breaking news, have you heard anything about mark mcgwire recently? no. are there many unanswered questions pending for mark mcgwire still? yes. But theres no story cause there is nothing breaking or developing in the matter, so by leaving something alone.... No, you wont be able to eliminate it forever... youre right. But you can silence people until something else formulates, rather than add gas.

I think we reached a stalemate here, haha. But man, wasnt this fun?

Greg Cohen said...

I'm not saying he should mention anything now. I'm saying the way he responded when he did made him look guilty. As you said it would be pointless to bring it up again.

Greg Cohen said...

Yes it was fun.
