5/31 Minor League Report

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight. He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will post them. Thank BG for the great contributions.

(AAA) Scranton/WB (36-21) beat Rochester 5-2: Box Score - Recap

PITCHING: Jeff Karstens pitched the first 4 innings giving up both Rochester runs on 6 hits, including a solo homer in the 1st inning. The 2nd run scored in the 4th inning on a bases loaded RBI sac fly. Karstens had 2 strikeouts and gave up 2 walks. He also had a wild pitch. His era in his 3 games since returning from the DL is 7.82.

The bullpen was the story of this win for SWB. Both Heath Phillips and David Robertson were outstanding. Phillips followed Karstens and pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. He gave up 3 hits and had 1 strikeout. ... David Robertson added 2.1 innings of scoreless relief picking up the win (2-0) In a real oddity Robertson had 4 strikeouts in the 9th inning. The extra strikeout victim reached on a wild pitch 3rd strike. Robertson gave up only 2 hits, 6 strikeouts and no walks.

OFFENSE: Francisco Liriano started the game for Rochester and pitched well leaving with a 2-1 lead after 6 plus innings. ... SWB picked up solo runs in the 2nd and 7th inning to force extra innings. ... In the 10th inning they picked the lead run on a wild pitch and Jason Lane added 2 insurance runs on a 2-run homer (11).

After a 90 minute rain delay Mark Melancon came on and pitched almost 4 innings. He pitched a scoreless 3rd inning. ... In the 4th he gave up 1 run on a solo homer. ... Melancon also gave up 1 run in the 5th inning on 2 singles..... In the 6th Melancon got the first 2 outs and was relieved after giving up a single. Melancon's line: 3.2 innings, 2 runs, 5 hits, 2 K's and no walks, his ERA is now 1.84.
