What an awful baseball game. I'm almost sorry I watched it. The Yanks dropped a second in a row to the O's, this time blowing two 4 run leads and a 1 run lead in extra innings. This is easily the ugliest loss of the year. The loss drops the Yanks to two games under .500, and it seems that all the positives that came from the 5 game winning streak are now just a memory.

Ian Kennedy started and once again wasn't good. After showing poise and the ability to get out of jams last start, tonight he showed neither. In 3 innings he allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits, with 3 strikeouts. The three earned runs came on back-to-back HRs by Kevin Millar (2-run shot), and Ramon Hernandez. He left the game with what the Yankees are calling a "slightly strained muscle near his right rib cage." The injury will probably land him on the DL.

Ross Ohlendorf relieved Kennedy and was very bad. He allowed 4 ER in 2.1 innings on 3 HRs, his ERA is now 6.37.

Edwar Ramirez was good, he pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless ball, and Kyle Farnsworth didn't allow a run in his 1.1 innings pitched, although he was helped by a nice throw by Bobby Abreu, and a better tag by Jose Molina on a play at the plate in the 8th.

Mo was Mo, he didn't allow a run in 2 innings, he did walk his first batter of the season, but also struck out 3. He, Hawkins and Farnsworth gave the Yanks a chance to win the game tonight, but then the disaster known as Latroy Hawkins came into the game with a 1 run lead in the 11th.

He gave up a leadoff single to Melvin Mora, then after retiring Nick Markakis, Aubrey Huff doubled to tie the game, and then after loading the bases, Alex Citron won the game with an RBI single.

Can someone please tell me why this bum is on this team? He's awful, and he's always been a choke artist, the only time he ever pitches well is when there's nothing on the line. We should have known this guy was bad news when he put Pauly's no. 21 on his back. Next time Girardi is in this position let's hope he goes with Jose Veras or whoever else is in the pen besides Latroy Hawkins.

Kennedy 3.0 4 4 3 0 3 2 7.41
Ohlendorf 2.1 4 4 4 0 2 3 6.37

Farnsworth 1.1 1 0 0 2 0 0 4.24

ORIOLES PITCHING

Offensively the Yanks were good tonight. They were able to open up two four runs leads (4-0 and 8-4), but the pitching could not hold the leads. Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon and Bobby Abreu all hit HRs.

The Yankees also scored a run on a Derek Jeter RBI single, but Jeter was sleeping the rest of the night; in the 6th, with runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 out and A-Rod batting he got picked off second. And following a leadoff double by Damon in the 9th he failed to get a bunt down and struck out to stall the Yankees rally.

The Yanks were able to take the lead in extras when Hideki Matsui lined a RBI single up the middle in the 11th to score Bobby Abreu, but as we already know Latroy Hawkins ruined that.

The Yanks look to salvage the final game in this three game set tomorrow at Camden Yards. Andy Pettitte starts for the Yanks and he will face off against Jeremy Guthrie. First pitch is set for 7:05 and the game can be seen on YES and heard on WCBS 880.

I said it in March, the curse of Paul O'Neill man..

Morgan Ensberg, no impact.

LaTroy Hawkins, no impact.

You cant even so much as put it ON anymore. Youre dealing with the Ratty Batty from Cincinatti here... Thats a hex if ive seen one.

Anyone dreamin about flyin gatorage jugs? You think thats Paulie's screensaver[since Paul would probably still use a screensaver ;)]

All #21 jokes aside, those guys suck. Ensberg should be released, call up Gardner and give him at least two weeks in CF to see what kind of impact he can make.

Relase the Troy. He's awful. He belongs back in the NL where, for whatever reason, it's easy to not suck.

Joba should have been used to save it. Yeah, I know, "they have a plan" but tonight was a perfect night to screw the plan, give Joba an inning, save the game, give him a couple more days off, and then let him throw his 50 pitches. It would have been like a starter's throw day anyway, since he pitched on Saturday.

Oh well. Ugly, awful loss, and it's pretty much all on Hawkins and Ian. Although if his muscle was strained that could explain some of the location issues.

Also, we got screwed once again, with Matsui's line out in the rain in the 9th and Arod's screw job double play that Roberts closed his eyes, said a prayed, and snagged out of pure desperation and luck.

Just need to hop on another 4-5 game win streak is all. Boston is so awful on the road that the Yankees have every chance of still winning the division.

This offense has become a force to be reckoned with, and once Posada comes back that will bloster it even more. Just get Melky out of there and put anyone else in the universe in there and we're really talking.

Pettite gets a W today and we're back in business. Still just 4 games beind the Sox in the LC, and I'm still not buying any other AL East teams as having a shot, including the Rays.

"...the Yankees have every chance of still winning the division. This offense has become a force to be reckoned with..."

LOL, whatever it is you're smoking, I want some. The Yankees have one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball, and it's pitching that wins titles. A few hit streaks here and there isn't going to make any difference. This is a third-place team this year, given how the Rays are playing.

Hilarious. Just wait until September when the Rays are struggling to win 75 games. Every year it's the same thing, and every year people think "it's differernt" and it's going to be the Blue Jays or the Orioles that are contenders. Now the Rays? LOL. Wait till the end of the season. You people crack me up.

As far as the Yankees pitching staff goes - almost everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, and they're still 9th in the AL in OPS against and 10th in ERA. Not good, no, but it can only get better. They've got Joba eventually going into the starting rotation, and if and when Kennedy and Hughes get back, they can't do any worse than they have so far.

I still get a kick out of people jumping on the Rays bandwagon. They got hot for 10-12 games in a row at home. That's it. Nothing more. They're 11-12 on the road, which is much more indicitave of the kind of team they are and will be the rest of the season.

The Yankees have underachieved and dealth with a giant slew of injuries. The Rays, on the other hand, have been overachieving on the pitching end. They have nowhere to go but back to the mediocre team they've always been. Aside from one hot streak on home turf, they're a mediocre team, and will finish, once again, well out of playoff contention.
