King: Bowa Leading Candidate to Replace Meacham

He doesn't mention a source (what else is new?) but according to George A. King III Larry Bowa is on top of the Yanks' list to replace Meacham as third base coach.

Bowa is still under contract with the Dodgers, but does have an out in his contract. Since the Dodgers were eliminated last night, the Yankees can now contact Bowa to see if he's interested.

I'm not sure how much interest he would have in returning to the Bronx, after all he did follow Torre out to L.A. when he could have stayed with the Yanks last year. But if he does want to return I think this would be a great move for the Yankees. Bowa is a great third base coach, and is one of the few people who can get Robinson Cano's head out of his ass.

Update: Joel Sherman also believes that Bowa is the leading candidate, and wonders if he would try to get the Yankees to bring in Manny Ramirez.
(Bowa) just spent 2 1-2 months with Ramirez and loved it. The Yanks do not currently have Ramirez as a priority for the offseason, and it is possible that Ramirez might not want to return home to New York after saying he did not like the Boston fishbowl (though I suspect the team that gives Manny a penny more is the one he will sign with). I would not be surprised if Bowa became a strong advocate of signing Ramirez if he does indeed become a Yankee employee again.

Well, I like Bowa, so I'd have no problem with him coming in as third base coach (and perhaps as manager one day?????!!!!).

And you know, wouldn't it be a neat little twist if the Yanks got Manny--sort of like when they got Boggs. I'm not saying we HAVE to do this, but if he hit like he did when he went to LA....

We shall see....

So King 3 says that Bowa is on top of the Yankees list. Great!

Question is does Bowa have the Yankees on the top of HIS list?

I would want Bowa back, but I'm not expecting it. Who knows

You guys are right; the issue is not whether the Yankees want Bowa, it's does Bowa want the Yankees.

The problem goes beyond whether Bowa wants it. Can he thrive on a staff of a control freak manager? Girardi may start becoming paranoid about his own job being surrounded by more qualified candidates, especially if the Yankees overhaul the rest of the staff. I'm starting to believe this is why he picked coaches with even less experience or qualifications than he had, so that he wouldn't be shown up and so that no one on his staff could emerge as a possible replacement candidate.

That's true Danny.

Although if he does that than he's obviously the wrong man for this job. The one thing about NY is the pressure, and you have to deal with that. You're always on the verge of being fired/replaced in this town.

I don’t see Bowa coming back to work for the Yankees again.
He's got a manager who is also an old griend. He's got a bunch of
eager young players to kick and yell at in LA.
Robbie Cano and the hilarious Hank & Co are simply not attractive enough.

You know, I see a certain manager of a team in The Bronx who might not be around all that much longer. Just a hunch....

I wouldn't be surprised if Girardi gets fired too. But it's going to take another very bad start to a season for that to happen.

If they start the year under .500 for the first two months, I could see it happening.
