Video of Swisher on the Mound

In case you missed it, here's video of Cy Young Swisher pitching last night:

By the way, did anyone catch Jorge Posada's post game comments?

During his interview with the media, the YES Network's Kim Jones asked him about the game ending with a laugh with Swisher on the mound, and Posada interrupted her saying, "Nobody was laughing. Today was embarrassing; just one of those days where everything went for them and nothing went for us. We didn’t pitch or do the things we were supposed to do. Nobody was laughing.”

Here was Swisher's had to say about it: “I wanted to try to compete. Even though I was pumping 78, I wanted to go out there and get three outs. I had fun with it. When am I ever going to have the chance to do that again? Probably never. I’m walking out of my professional career with a 0.00 ERA. ... We know we didn’t play very well today, but we had to find something to laugh about in that moment and I just happened to be the guy everyone was laughing at. If that’s what it takes to get us back together and get rockin’, then I’m all for it.”

Even Derek Jeter admitted that sometimes you have to laugh during nights like last night. Here's what his take from Mark Feinsand:

Derek Jeter had a different take, saying “you have no choice” but to laugh when things get that out of hand.

“Whether Swish pitched or not, it’s still the same result,” Jeter said. “You get a chuckle out of it because it’s him and he’s not going to stop talking about it.”

Is it just me or should Jorge lighten up a bit? I like his intensity, but come on, it's still a game and Swisher on the mound was funny as hell.

By the way, on Swisher's Twitter page he posted this after last night's game: "My arm is killing me! hahahahaha"

Let's be fair here. I am a huge Swish fan, and watching him pitch last night was maybe the best/humorous half inning of baseball i've witnessed in my life. But consider Jorgy had to catch all of that horrific pitching, throw the ball back to the mound about 700 times last night, do all that squatting and do it all with a front row seat from behind the plate. I played ball in college, and catching innings that never seem to end and throwing the ball that much is not fun at all. I'd be equally pissed and certainly not laughing.

But as a fan, I love Swish and loved that half inning :)

It was pretty funny but remember this is a team that didn't make the post season last year and was horrible against a team that went to the series. Jorge has every right not to find this funny.

Fine if he doesn't find it funny, but if the rest of the team did, which it sure look like they did, he doesn't need to pretend that they didn't, or act like it's a bad thing that they did.

Hey guys, I added a few more quotes to the post above. Posada's complete quote, a quote from Jeter, and a quote from Swisher himself.

I agree Greg. I've felt this team has been a bit to buttoned-up for a few years now. Last year the Giambi mustache thing seemed to loosen them up a bit, but it was short lived and they went back to business as usual. I've always admired the Yankees for their professionalism and demeanor on and off the field, but this is still a game, and these guys need to have fun.

That said, I do want to see how the team responds today. A loss like that is a bitter pill, regardless of how early in the year it is, and the comic relief provided by Swisher. This is a division rival, and last year's AL champs, and the Yankees and AJ need to send a clear message tonight that there are consequences to playing in the same division as the Evil Empire. I expect a focussed and aggressive(but still fun) effort from the Bombers tonight. Anything less and Posada will have reason to be stern.

Yeah, we get it Jorge, you're Mr. Serious and you care.

Now enjoy the damn game. I was laughing my ass off during the entire inning Swisher was on the mound.

It was funny. Baseball isn't a terminal illness. Enjoy it.

How about when Michael Kay said he didn't find it cool that swisher rolled the ball to the dugout after his strikeout of kapler...saying they are in the middle of a game...which to me makes no sense cause every time someone keeps a "first time" ball they are in the middle of the game...and he also said that it was embarrassing to kapler...i mean...really...get over it...kapler is a big boy...he can handle it...i mean...he was struck out by swisher...so anyway you look at it he will be embarrassed...whether they kept the ball or not...

This being serious all the time is what is wrong with the yankees sometimes.

Its sad he got just as many outs as Wang did

I did notice that about Kay Anonymous. He's an idiot. It seemed like Flaherty and Cone tried to set him straight.

R.J., Posada wasn't even catching Swisher (Jorge was at first, and Molina was catching), so that's not why he was bent out of shape. Posada just has no sense of humor whatsoever. He really needs to lighten up.

I wrote about this game in my blog today, and how it's a myth that the Yankees need to be humorless:

Greg, I linked to this video & gave you a plug at POTY today.

Greg Cohen said...

Hey Lisa,

You're absolutely right. Even Jeter was able to see the humor in this, and he's the captain.

By the way, great post over on your blog. Regarding what you mention at the end about the "true Yankees" talking to Swisher about this, I really hope nobody says a word. That would not only be ridiculous, but it would probably make Swisher hate being a Yankee very quickly.

Greg Cohen said...

Hey SteveB,

Thanks dude!

What did you think of this whole thing?

SteveB said...

Do you mean the game or your posting?

BTW, I am working up my posting right now, it'll be online in a little bit.

Greg Cohen said...

On how Posada reacted.

How many Cy Young votes do you think he will get? 0.00 ERA is pretty impressive.

Hey Greg,

I basically professed my undying love for Swisher this morning on my blog.

The guy can do no wrong.

Love the site.

Hahahaha, great post NYSJ.

I love Jorgie, seriously. But he needs to lighten up sometimes. Now in fairness to Posada, I think he was boiling over the game itself, not really Nick Swisher.

I thought under the circumstances, Swisher smiling away on the mound and tossing that strikeout ball into the dugout was fantastic.

I have no doubts about Swisher's mindset, no question he is a dedicated ballplayer. But you gotta have fun too. His smile is infectious, so is his hustle.

I am so sick of Michael Kay I can barely stand to listen to him. I didn't see this inning last night and appreciate the chance to view it here. When I heard Kay trying to be stern on Swisher I just rolled my eyes. Please. Maybe Jorge can be annoyed and serious but Kay? Give me a break!

Will said...

I'll say this for Posada - someone needs to be sending the bullpen a strong emotional message that thus far they have sucked ass and they better man up. I think he's spending a lot of time behind the plate there thinking: "jesus h christopher can just one of you throw a pitch that doesn't allow 5 runs."

Subway Squawkers said...

And the way to send the bullpen a strong message is to criticize...Nick Swisher, who actually pitched well last night? Don't see it.

Will said...

I didnt see the video - but the quote sounds like he's criticizing the assumption that there was anything too funny about Swisher having to pitch. Sounds to me like he's pissed off that Swisher had to pitch at all.

i <3 Nick Swisher

Brad said...

Yeah I don't think Jorge was pissed at Swisher he was pissed about the game. That said lighten up.

As far as Kay goes....well he continues to prove why he is one of the worst announcers in the game. He is beyond annoying and completely uninformed. What a schmuck.

Swisher was great last night. It's a game and if you can't have fun plating it you should reconsider your career choices.

Greg Cohen said...

Any of you guys listening to Michael Kay?

I'm not, but Lisa over at Subway Squawkers just wrote a post about how he's been complaining about Swisher all day.

Kay apparently also suggests that Posada and Jeter talk to Swisher about "the Yankee way."

Lisa shares this quote from Kay: "Think about the championship teams of the past, and tell me who the goofball is on it?"

What a freaking crock. Can someone at YES please get rid of this tool? PLEASE!?!?!?!?!

By the way, here's the link to Lisa's most recent post.

haha i can't believe he kept the ball for his first strikeout. That made my night.

That whole thing was funny! MLB Network broke in to show it. It was funny. Swisher was looking like he was having a good time. Really! It was hysterical.
I just googled Steinbrenner and Swisher in relief to see if Hank had any comments and found my way here.

Listen, I am an O's fan and I love giving Yankee fans a hard time- but I know it is just a matter of time before we suck and the Yankees pick it up.

I am glad to see the majority of Yank fans are taking it stride.

Hey mdbirdlover.com,

Welcome to the site.

I thought the whole Swisher thing was hilarious.

You guys are playing some nice baseball. Jones just hit a bomb against the Rangers to put that game away. You have a good young team. I don't know if you have the pitching to hang around all year, but in a season or two you're gonna turn the AL east from a three team division to a four team division.
