Winning pitcher - Andy Pettitte (5-1)
Losing pitcher - Cliff Lee (2-6)
SV - Mariano Rivera (10)

With the Yankees 3-1 win over the Indians and the Red Sox 6-3 loss to the Blue Jays the Yankees are in first place in the AL East all by themselves for the first time since October 1, 2006. Now the important part is staying there.

Andy Pettitte started for the Yankees and while his numbers weren't bad he struggled throughout. In five innings he allowed just one run on six hits, but walked five and struck out just one. He threw 84 pitches, only 45 were strikes. Apparently he injured his back in Texas while doing his normal exercises and it effected him throughout tonight's outing. It was also the reason Joe Girardi wisely took him out with two on and nobody out in the bottom of the sixth. I give Pettitte credit for two things, he battled through pain and zero command, and never allowed that big hit that would have gotten Cleveland back into the game. Pettitte has what the Yankees described as a stiff lower back, but said in the postgame that he would make his next start.

After Pettitte left the game Alfredo Aceves came in and saved the day for the Yanks. He got out of a bases loaded no out situation in the sixth with only one runs allowed (charged to Pettitte) and then added two more scoreless to get the ball to Mariano Rivera. Aceves has been a godsend for this bullpen this year. So far he's 3-1, with a 2.75 ERA in nine games, and in 19.2 innings pitched he's allowed six runs on 16 hits, walked 3 and struck out 18.

Mo allowed a hit in the ninth, but that was it as he was able to pick up his tenth save of the season. Tonight was the 58th time that Mo saved one of Pettitte's wins, and that's an MLB record. The record had previously been held by Dennis Eckersley and Bob Welch.

All the Yankees offense came in the second and third inning off Indians' starter Cliff Lee. With one out in the second Nick Swisher walked, Brett Gardner then singled moving Swisher to third. Derek Jeter then drove Swisher home with an RBI single, Johnny Damon followed with a single of his own to load the bases, and then Mark Teixeira drove in the Yanks second run with an RBI ground out. The Yanks third run came in the third on a sac fly off the bat of Swisher.

Jorge Posada had a very nice night in his first game back from the DL. He went 2-for-3, with a double and a walk.

Every Yankees starter had a hit tonight except for Hideki Matsui. Jeter and Posada were the only two who had multi-hit games, picking up two hits each.

The Yankees extended their errorless streak to a franchise record 15 straight games.

CC Sabathia will make his first career start as a visitor in Cleveland tomorrow night, with sinkerballer Fausto Carmona going for the Tribe.

Good win its nice to see the yanks grind out a win like they did tonight and not rely on the homerun or just blowing out the opponent.

Hi everybody!

Maybe it is too early to say this, but i have a good feeling for this team this year.

The issue with the starting pitching rotation is not a problem for me. You just have to take a look back to last year's pitching staff, remember Ponson? The debate about Wang or Hughes, or the Joba to the pen argue is like a blessing if you think where we were last year.

I think yesterday's game was the key for this series with Lee on the mound. Iam sure that CC is gona be extramotivated against his former team, so I think we are gona win and with one of the other two games I will de happy about this series and the texas/cleveland trip result.

Let's go Yanks!

Best wishes for all Yankee fans from Spain

It really is compared to Ponson and Rasner.

Yesterday's game was very important, you're right. Especially since Lee has owned them the last two years.

By the way, what part of Spain are you in?

Hi Greg!

I'm from Madrid.

Congratulations on your blog. I think is great. Here in Spain it's impossible to hear any baseball news, so I read it everyday even in the postseason and it keeps me informed.

Again, great job!!!

Thanks for reading, I'm glad you like the blog.

I've heard Madrid was beautiful, but were their angry riots when Barcelona won the Champions League this week?

Anonymous said...

No, the riots were in Barcelona. They are not used to win championsips so they act this way. Here in Madrid, we support Real, this is the reason why i become a yankee fan when i discovered baseball, because both teams have the same wining culture and they are the most succesfull franchise in their respective sports, so I had no choice.

FC Barcelona is like Red Sox, they allways have been behind Real but in the last years they have done a good job and are the team to beat

I know that's why I said angry riots. I know Real Madrid fans hate Barca and vice versa.
