Just a nice and easy win for the Yanks last night in the Bronx as they rolled over the last-place Indians 8-2.

Phil Hughes rebounded from a couple rough starts to throw seven strong. After striking out the first five batters he faced you knew Hughes was working with his best stuff, and he basically rolled from there. He allowed just two runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out eight on his way to his sixth win of the season.

He got into a little trouble in the top of the fourth. Travis Hafner drew a one out walk, Austin Kearns followed with a single, and then two batters later Jhonny Peralta drove in Hafner with an RBI double. It was just 2-1 at the time so a hit could have given the Indians the lead, but Hughes struck out Luis Valbuena to end the inning. The second run Hughes allowed came in the seventh on a solo homer by Russell Branyon.

Nick Swisher got the Yankees on the board in the second with a two-run homer that he smashed off the rightfield foul pole.

Indians starter Fausto Carmona would keep them off the board until the bottom of the sixth. In the inning the Yanks would load the bases with nobody out, then Juan Miranda drew a walk and Brett Gardner hit a sac fly and the Yanks had build their lead up to 4-1. They should have done more damage in the inning, but after Gardner's at-bat, Ramiro Pena struck out and Chad Moeller grounded out to end the inning.

After the Tribe cut the lead to two in the top of the seventh, the Yankees would once again load the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the inning. This time, thanks to Robinson Cano, no runners were left stranded, because he hammered a grand slam off Indians reliever Tony Sipp. It was one of three hits on the day for Robbie, who not only extended his hitting streak to 11 games, but also got his average back up to .351. Great game for Robbie, who was hitting in the cleanup spot for the first time in his career.

Besides Cano, Derek Jeter (2-for-4) and Swisher (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games, and Curtis Granderson went 1-for-3 in his first game back from the DL.

After pushing the lead to six it was time for the bullpen to do its job, and surprisingly they did. Sergio Mitre and Chan Ho Park each threw a scoreless inning to finish the game off for the Yanks.

The Yanks and Tribe play game two of their series this afternoon in the Bronx. CC Sabathia will get the ball for the Yankees, with left-hander David Huff going for Cleveland. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. and the game can be seen on YES.
