Minor Matters

There has been a number of interesting happenings coming out of the Yankee farm system the last week or so. Here's a few that might be of interest:

Scranton

Zach McAllister has won his last four starts. His last time out he pitched 6 innings allowing 3 hits, and 1 run in a win over Syracuse. He has been pitching progressively better over his last few outings. He is now 4-2 with a 4.03 ERA in 58 innings pitched. He has walked just 3 batters in his last 5 starts.

Kei Igawa keeps adding to his legacy, besides being the all time wins leader, he is now the all time strike out leader. He is also close to topping the list for most starts and moving towards the top of the list in innings pitched. Well worth the money!

Outfielder Chad Huffman is batting .324 over his last 10 games. He has raised his batting average to .285 from early May when it was below .200.

Second baseman Reegie Corona has been wowing fans with acrobatic plays in the field. He's an awesome defender but still struggling with the bat, hitting only .225 in 50 games.

Zach Segovia, has been pitching well in relief. He has a 2.20 ERA in his last 10 games and has 2 wins. The wins were earned in games started by Aroldis Chapman and Stephen Strasburg.

Colin Curtis, who was impressive in spring training, just returned from the DL after spraining an ankle. He promptly picked up where he left off with a hit in his first at bat, extending his hit streak to 8 games (missing 31 games in between). He's been out since April 28th and for the season is batting .339 in 18 games. He is arguably the best outfield prospect in Triple-A. With all the injuries to Yankee outfielders, this was a missed opportunity for him. Hopefully he will get a shot at some point this year.

Jason Hirsh, a starter all year was moved into the bullpen to make room for recent pick up of veteran starter Tim Redding. Hirsh was doing well as a starter but this could be an effort to get him ready for a long relief role if Alfredo Aceves doesn't make it back for awhile.

Trenton

Brandon Laird has been playing really well offensively for the Thunder. Recently hitting for the cycle, he is hitting .310 with 10 home runs and leads the EL with 50 RBIs (third in all of the minor leagues).

Top catching prospect, Austin Romine has only been hitless in 7 games all season and right now he has a 12 game hitting streak and is batting .327.

Charleston

Top catching prospect JR Murphy, who was recently promoted from extended spring training to Low A Charleston bypassing short season ball, hit his first home run, a 3 run shot. He now has 11 RBIs in 14 games.

Lefty Shaeffer Hall, 2-2 with a 1.85 ERA as a starter was promoted to Tampa. In his first start with Tampa he pitched 5 shut out innings, striking out 6.

Tampa

Guess who could be showing signs of living up to his top prospect status? Former first round pick, Andrew Brackman. He has given up only 5 earned runs in his last 4 starts, striking out 19 and walking only 4 in 22 innings. Yes, only 4 walks in his last 4 games! He has also won his last 3 starts.

Catcher Mitch Abelta, outfielder Jack Rye, infielder Corban Joseph, and pitcher Adam Warren will represent Tampa in the FSL All Star Team. Recently promoted Hector Noesi also garnered all star honors.
