After these last two nights it's almost hard to believe how bad the Mariners are with Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez at the top of their rotation. Last night, it was Lee pitching a complete game, tonight, it's was King Felix's turn.
Lee was very good, but Felix was nearly unhittable. He allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out 11 in his complete game shutout in the Bronx on Wednesday night. From the first pitch on, the Yankees batters had no chance. The only two hits the Yankees could muster were two doubles, one by Mark Teixeira in the fourth, and the other was actually a routine pop fly by Colin Curtis that Chone Figgins lost in the dusk. They had a few chances to knock in a run, especially early, but went 0-for-7 with RISP.
On the Yankees side, Javier Vazquez wasn't terrible, but he wasn't very good either. In six innings he allowed three runs on six hits, walked two, and struck out eight. Normally enough for a win with this lineup, but not on this night. His rough innings came in the second and third, when Seattle scored all three of their runs off Javy. He settled down after that and escaped a couple jams to keep the Yankees in the game.
However, when he left the game Damaso Marte and Chad Gaudin made sure the Yankees had no chance coming back in this one. They each allowed two runs in their outtings. Marte pitched just two-thirds of an inning, and in what could be his last game in Pinstripes, Gaudin threw two and a third innings.
Russell Branyon, Milton Bradley and Michael Saunders had big offensive games for Seattle. Saunders had the biggest night, blasting two homers and driving in three.
That's really all there is to say about this one. I saw a few message boards going crazy, so it seems that two losses to the Mariners are a little too much to take for some, but relax, there's no need to panic. The Yankees faced two very good pitchers the last two nights and just got beat. It happens. One thing that bothers me is that the Mariners, or the worst offense in the league, has scored 14 runs in two games against Yankees pitching. Hopefully CC ends that tomorrow.
In some good new, Boston lost to Tampa tonight so the Yankees are still alone in first place.
They send CC Sabathia to the mound tomorrow as they look to salvage a game in this series. Ryan Rowland-Smith will take the mound for Seattle. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. and the game will be on YES.
