Last night in Toronto, Phil Hughes had one of his roughest starts of season as the Yankees fell 6-3. It was his shortest outing of the season as he lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed five run on six hits, walked five, and struck out six. The five walks were the most he's allowed since his first start of the year. All those walks, strikeouts, and deep counts all added up to 102 pitches on the night.

The right-hander did not have the best command of his fastball, and also struggled putting hitters away. It was an all around rough night for Hughes.

Toronto got started early against Hughes, scoring twice in the 1st. Vernon Wells drove in the Jays first run with an RBI triple. He then came home on an Adam Lind single.

Two innings later the Jays doubled their lead when Wells struck again, this time hammering a high fastball to left for a two-run homer.
Marcus Thames got the Yankees back in the game with a two-run homer of his own in the top of the 4th, but that would be all the Yanks would score against starter Brett Cecil. In 8 innings, the southpaw allowed two runs on seven hits, walked two, and struck out five on his way to his 11th win of the year.

Hughes would allow another run in the 4th when Wells struck again with an RBI infield single. Javier Vazquez took over from there and pitched pretty well. In 4.1 innings, he allowed a run on two hits, walked one, and struck out two. The 4.1 innings was his longest outing in last four appearances, three of which were starts..

The Yanks did make it interesting in the 9th. Eduardo Nunez drove in the Yanks 3rd run with a single. They then loaded the bases, but Curtis Granderson flew out to center to end the game.

Tampa lost so the Yanks and Rays remain tied on top of the AL East. The Yanks now have an off-day before starting a three-game series with the White Sox on Friday in Chicago.
