Jays Win 7-3, Yanks Streak Snapped At Eight

(REUTERS/Ray Stubblebine)

The Yankees eight-game winning streak came to an end yesterday as the Yankees fell to the Blue Jays 7-3. Phil Hughes might have had better stuff that his recent start--that's what the YES guys said about 80 times--but the results just weren't there.

In six innings, Hughes allowed six runs on seven hits, walked one, and struck out five. Three of the hits were home runs, accounting for five of the six Blue Jay runs. Two of the homers--a two-run homer by Vernon Wells in the 1st, and another two-run shot by Aaron Hill in the 3rd--were both hit on 0-2 counts. John Buck hit the third, a solo shot in the 6th.

Whether he had better stuff or not, it wasn't Hughes' day.

It also was not a good day for the Yankees' bats. Jays starters Brett Cecil held the Yanks to three runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings. The Jays bullpen took over from their and held the Yankees off the board over the final 2.2. As they usually do, the Yanks had their chances, but went just 3-for-12 with RISP and left 10 men on base.

Alex Rodriguez picked up two hits and an RBI in his first game off the DL. Brett Gardner and Ramiro Pena each went 2-for-3, Gardner drove in a run, Pena scored one, and Jorge Posada drove in a run. Besides that, there's not much to talk about offensively.

Tampa and Boston both lost as well, so the Yanks didn't give up any ground. Eight out of nine ain't too bad, time to start another streak today. A.J. Burnett will start the series opener against the Orioles, with left-hander Brian Matusz starting for Baltimore. First pitch is 1:05 p.m. and the game will be on YES.
