Late Summer Returns on Some Ex-Yankees

Position Players

Lance Berkman - .285/.402/.562, 30 HR, 160 wRC+ (482 PA)

How did he clear waivers? Perhaps more importantly - how is he still a Cardinal after clearing waivers? He could have been a huge addition for the Giants, Rangers, or Braves ... at the very least.

Austin Jackson - .249/.316/.366, 7 HR, 89 wRC+ (550 PA)

Jackson nearly doubled his home run total, knocking out three in August. And ... that's about it.

Juan Miranda - .213/.315/.402, 7 HR, 92 wRC+ (202 PA)

Miranda spent the month of August in Triple-A with mediocre results.

Jose Tabata - .270/.353/.370, 4 HR, 105 wRC+ (366 PA)

The Pirates rewarded Tabata with a hefty contract extension in late-August, following his return from the DL. Tabata had his best month of the season, posting a 123 wRC+. At least we can read about Marte's setbacks as he long-tosses in Florida.

Pitchers

Alfredo Aceves - 89.0 IP, 66 H, 32 BB, 60 K, 2.83 ERA, 3.92 FIP

Aceves struck out 17 in 15.2 IP, allowing only 2 ER.

Phil Coke - 101.0 IP, 109 H, 36 BB, 63 K, 4.28 ERA, 3.46 FIP

12 IP, 8 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 20 K. Wow.

Michael Dunn - 58.1 IP, 44 H, 31 BB, 64 K, 3.55 ERA, 4.51 FIP

The Marlins appear to be leveraging Dunn against LHB with more frequency, and his numbers have improved accordingly. I don't see him as a future closer, but he should be a strong lefty specialist.

Ian Kennedy - 187.1 IP, 161 H, 49 BB, 161 K, 3.03 ERA, 3.53 FIP

I often wonder if Kennedy, Hughes, and Chamberlain reminisce about their days as the Yankees 'Big Three.' While they're all still very young, I also wonder how many scouts believed Kennedy would have the best career thus far.

Dustin Moseley - 120.0 IP, 117 H, 36 BB, 64 K, 3.30 ERA, 3.96 FIP

Moseley was recently moved to the 60-day DL with a shoulder injury. It's a shame to see such a successful season end due to an injury.

Javier Vazquez - 154.2 IP, 157 H, 47 BB, 126 K, 4.42 ERA, 3.99 FIP

Forty strikeouts, seven walks, and a strong 2.91 FIP in August ... this is becoming depressing. Thoughts, Greg?

(Greg's Thoughts: He's still gutless)

Kerry Wood - 43.1 IP, 35 H, 19 BB, 49 K, 3.32 ERA, 3.91 FIP

While the Yankees bullpen has oftentimes appeared as an embarrassment of riches, I can't help but reassert how much more I would have preferred Wood to Soriano.
