September 4th - 10th

September 4th

1905 - The New York Highlanders win their 5th doubleheader in a row-a record-as they tally a double shutout of the Boston Red Sox by scores of 7-0 and 1-0. Their win streak will go through September 8th and will stretch to 15 victories, propelling Highlanders to a 1-1/2 game lead in the AL.

1908 - In New York City, Washington Senators Ace Walter Johnson opens a series against the Yankees by beating veteran New York starter Jack Chesbro by the score of 3-0, allowing 6-hits in the Senator win.

1916 - At New York City, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox split a doubleheader. Red Sox win the opener by the score of 7-1, behind lefty starter Babe Ruth, while the Yankees score in the 9th inning to win the nightcap to win the game by a score of 4-3.

1918 - The New York Yankees split a pair with the Boston Red Sox, losing 4-2 to Babe Ruth in the opener, and then beating Carl Mays by the score of 7-3. Babe Ruth allows no hits until the 6th inning, then just allows 5-hits overall in the game.

1920 - At Fenway Park, 33,000 fans are on hand for a doubleheader and to see Babe Ruth’s return to the New York Yankees lineup. The Babe hits his 45th HR in the opener to give the Yankees, a 5-3 win. In the 2nd game, Yankees starter Carl Mays pitches to a mixture of boos and cheers. Carl Mays takes a 5-3 lead into the 9th inning, and then he fails to back up home on a play at the plate. A loose ball allows Joe Bush to score the winning run and the Red Sox win the game by the score of 6-5.

1922 - At the start of the day, both New York teams (Yankees and Giants) are on top, and both Boston teams (Red Sox and Braves) are on the bottom of the their league standings. But today, the Red Sox will take 2 and knock the AL leaders off their perch as they sweep the Yankees, by scores of 4-3 and 6-5. Yankees slugger Babe Ruth hits his last regular season HR in the Polo Grounds. He gets it off of veteran P Herb Pennock, who also gave up Babe Ruth's 1st Yankee homer, also at the Polo Grounds.

1923 - New York Yankees starter Sam Jones no-hits the Philadelphia A’s by the score of 2-0, beating Bob Hasty. Babe Ruth is the only strikeout victim of the game, as he slips a point behind Detroit Tigers Harry Heilmann in the AL batting race. Not till Ken Holtzman's no-hitter in 1969, will another pitcher record a no-hitter with no strikeouts.

1923 - in a twilight charity game, Babe Ruth plays 1B for Philadelphia's Ascension Catholic Club. Ruth scores the only run in a 2-1 loss to the Lit Brothers.

1939 - After Labor Day MLB games are finished, the Cincinnati Reds lead the St. Louis Cardinals by 4 games in the NL. In the AL, the New York Yankees are 14 1⁄2 ahead.

1941 - The New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 6-3 to clinch the 1941 AL pennant, the earliest date in MLB history. The Yankees need only 136 games, giving them a 91-45 record.

1945 - Long-time Yankees batting practice P Paul Schreiber, who last pitched in the MLB in 1923 and the minors in 1931, relieves for the New York against the Detroit Tigers in a rout. Schreiber gives no hits in 3 ½ innings, but Tigers starter Dizzy Trout wins the game by a score of 10-0.

1946 - Former Yankees P Ken Wright (1974) was born. The New York Yankees obtained Ken Wright from the Kansas City Royals along with OF Lou Piniella for New York Yankees veteran P Lindy McDaniel. Ken went 0-0 in 3 games in 1974 for the Yankees.

1950 - Former Yankees P Doyle Alexander (1976, 1983) was born. The New York Yankees in a major trade with the Baltimore Orioles acquired Doyle Alexander during the 1976 AL season. The Yankees sent P Rudy May, P Tippy Martinez, P Dave Pagan, P Scott McGregor and C Rick Dempsey for Orioles P Doyle Alexander, P Grant Jackson, P Ken Holtzman and reserve C Elrod Hendricks. He went 10-5 for the Yankees in 1976. He appeared in 1 in game of the 1976 World Series, losing to the Cincinnati Reds. He left the Yankees for MLB free agency in the winter of 1976. The Yankees re-obtained him in 1983 from the San Francisco Giants for P Andy McGaffigan and OF Ted Wilborn. The Yankees released him in May of 1983, after he went 0-2 for the team.

1955 - Mickey Mantle's 1st-inning three-run HR allows New York Yankees starter Bob Turley to coast to an 8-3 win over the Washington Senators. This is Mantle's last home run of the 1955 AL season; he finishes with 37 HRs with 113 RBIs.

1960 - After 30 straight scoreless innings, the Yankees finally score but the Orioles extend their win streak to 7 by topping the Yankees again by the score of 6-2. With 2-outs in the 7th inning, Yankees 1B Bill “Moose” Skowron singles to break up Chuck Estrada's no-hitter, but closer Hoyt Wilhelm, in relief, preserves the win for the Birds.

1961 - New York Yankees CF Mickey Mantle misses the Labor Day doubleheader with a painful and swollen forearm, but the Bronx Bombers don't need him as they sweep a pair from the expansion Washington Senators by scores of 5-3 and 3-2. The sweep moves the Yankees 6-games up on the slumping Detroit Tigers, who lose by the score of 6-3 to the Baltimore Orioles and trail 4-1 in a game suspended. Mantle's replacement John Blanchard breaks a 3-3 tie in the opener with an 8th inning HR.

1964 - The New York Yankees overcome 2-HRs by Ken Harrelson to beat the host Kansas City A's by the score of 9-7, in 10 innings. Mickey Mantle and Elston Howard hit back-to-back HRs in the 4th inning for New York. With the Orioles losing today, Baltimore (81-54) and the Chicago White Sox (82-55) are virtually tied for 1st place, with the Yankees (77-56) in 2nd place, 3 games back.

1965 - At Yankee Stadium, the Boston Red Sox sweep 2 games from New York, winning by scores of 1-0 and 7-2. Mickey Mantle's HR in the 2nd game, off of Red Sox starter Dennis Bennett is the only bright spot for the Yankees.

1972 - The Yankees split a doubleheader with the Baltimore Orioles, losing 4-3 before winning 5-2. The split leaves the Yankees (69-61) in 4th place, just one-half game out of 1st place. The Orioles (69-60) are tied with the Detroit Tigers for the AL East lead. Andy Etchebarren's 3-run HR in the 1st game, off of Yankees starter Fritz Peterson is the big blow, while the Yankees take the 2nd game behind the 3-hits, including a HR by Bobby Murcer.

1977 - New York Yankees southpaw Don Gullet comes of DL, hurls his 1st AL shutout, a 4-0 victory of the Twins. Cliff Johnson’s 1st inning grand slam HR accounted for all of the scoring. The victory allowed the Yankees to have a 4 1/2 game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

1978 - Behind Ron Guidry's 20th win, the New York Yankees take the 1st game against the Detroit Tigers by the score of 9-1. The Yankees score 8-runs in the 7th inning. The Tigers win the 2nd game by the score of 5-4 to keep the Yankees, 5 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

1991 - Lou Gehrig's 1938 New York Yankees road uniform brings $220,000 at a memorabilia auction in San Francisco, becoming the most expensive non-card sports memorabilia item ever sold. A Honus Wagner baseball card goes for $125,500, while an autographed Lou Gehrig bat sells for $47,500.

1991 - Removing an asterisk which really never existed, the Statistical Accuracy Committee decides to put Roger Maris '61 HR season ahead of Babe Ruth's 60 HR mark instead of listing it separately as it was from 1962 until 1991. Regarding the expunging of the asterisk, historian Bill Deane later points out, "It was an easy job: the asterisk never existed. Roger Maris' record was, from 1962 until 1991, listed separately from Babe Ruth's and was never actually defined by 'some distinctive mark.”

1992 - New York Yankees OF Roberto Kelly ties a MLB record by reaching base on catcher's interference for the 7th time this 1992 AL season. The Pirates Dale Berra set the MLB mark in 1983. Texas Rangers C Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez is the latest victim of Kelly in during a Yankees 6-3 victory over the Rangers.

1993 - New York Yankees starter Jim Abbott no-hits the Cleveland Indians at Yankee Stadium, by a score of 4-0. The Flint, Michigan native who was born without a right hand, becomes the 1st Yankee hurler in a decade to throw a no-hitter. The last no-hitter was by Yankee starter Dave Righetti in 1983.

1996 - Former Yankees 1B Babe Dahlgren, the man who replaced Lou Gehrig at 1B to end the MLB consecutive games played streak in June of 1939, dies in Arcadia, California. In the 1939 game, Babe goes 2-for-4, including hitting a HR, in a 22-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Briggs Stadium.

1996 - New York starter Andy Pettitte wins his 20th game of the 1996 AL season, as the Yankees defeat the Oakland A's by a score of 10-3. Yankee hitters, Paul O'Neill and Tino Martinez hit solo HRs in the 4th inning. The Yankees last 20-game winner was Ron Guidry in 1985.

1998 - The New York Yankees (100-38) win their 100th game of the 1998 AL season, defeating the Chicago White Sox by a score of 11-6. It is the earliest any AL team has ever reached the 100-win mark. The 1906 Chicago Cubs needed 132 games to reach the 100-win mark. Bernie Williams leads the Yankees with a pair of HRs and 4-RBIs. The Yankees 100th win beating the 1906 Chicago Cubs and 1954 Cleveland Indians mark by 5 days.

2000 - Former Yankees Minor League player and Manager Pink May passed away. (1911-2000). Infielder Pinky May played five seasons in the MLB, all with the Philadelphia Phillies. He is one of the few players who played at least 5 seasons, having played at least 100 games and 400 at-bats in each season. May signed with the New York Yankees in 1932 out of Indiana University. He never appeared with the Yankees at the MLB level. In October of 1938, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. He broke into the majors in 1939, playing in 135 games and leading the league in sacrifice hits. He made the NL All-Star team in 1940. He was in the Navy during World War II after his major league baseball career. He was long time minor league manager for the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds (1947-1972). In 1963, he managed the Fort Lauderdale Yankees. In 1970 his son, catcher Milt May made it to the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates

2001 - The Toronto Blue Jays roll over the sleep walking Yankees by the score of 14-0. Yankees starter Andy Pettitte lasts just 3 innings in losing to Jays starter Chris Carpenter, who goes the distance allowing only 6-hits, while striking out 11 Yankee batters.

2009 - Blue Jays Ace Roy Halladay pitches a one-hitter to beat the New York Yankees by the score of 6-0. Toronto ends New York's winning streak at 6 games.

September 5th

1872 - Former Yankees P Al Orth (1904-1909) was born (1872-1948). On July 20,1904, veteran hurler Al Orth was traded by the Washington Senators to the New York Highlanders for Pitchers Tom Hughes and Barney Wolfe. Al Orth went 72-73 in 163 games with the New York Yankees. His best Yankees season was in 1906, posting a 27-17 mark, leading the AL pitchers in wins. In 1905, he went 18-16 for the Yankees.

1908 - Washington Senators starter, Walter Johnson tops the New York Highlanders by the score of 6-0, as the Yankees manage just only 4 hits of the Nat’s ace.

1911 - Former Yankees 1B John “Buddy” Hassett (1942) was born (1911-1997). The New York Yankees originally signed John “Buddy” Hassett, but he was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1936. He has re-obtained by the New York Yankees from the Boston Braves in 1941, in the Tommy Holmes trade. He was the regular Yankees 1B, playing in 132 games with a .284 BA, 5 HRs with 48 RBI’s. He went into the military service in 1942. He was released by in the Yankees in May of 1946.

1920 - Former Yankees minor league P Gene Bearden was born. During June of 1942, Gene Bearden was sent from Savannah (South Atlantic) to the New York Yankees in an unknown transaction. Gene served in the Navy during WWII. He never pitched for the Yankees at the MLB level. On December 6,1946, Gene was traded by the Yankees along with P Al Gettel and OF Hal Peck to the Cleveland Indians for C Sherm Lollar and INF Ray Mack.

1921 - The Washington Senators veteran starter Walter “Big Train” Johnson breaks Cy Young's strike out record as he fans 7 Yankees batters for a MLB career total of 2,287.

1926 - At Baltimore, the minor league team, Baltimore Orioles (International League) embarrassed the New York Yankees by the score of 18-9 in an exhibition game. Yankees slugger Babe Ruth is 0-for-5 and tangles with INF Mark Koenig in the Yankees dugout after the 8th inning. Ruth yells at Koenig of loafing on several plays.

1927 - The Boston Red Sox edge the Yankees by the score of 12-11, in an 18-inning battle during the 1st game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park, Red Ruffing, a future Yankee, pitched 15 innings for Red Sox, he got a no decision, but he made a permanent impression on Yankees front office. The Yankees won the 2nd game with a 5-0 shutout.

1930 - Former Yankees minor league INF Wayne Belardi was born. On February 19, 1957, Wayne was traded by the Kansas City A’s with players to be named later, P Art Ditmar, INF Jack McMahan and P Bobby Shantz to the New York Yankees for a player to be named later; P Rip Coleman, INF Milt Graff, INF Billy Hunter, Pitchers Mickey McDermott, Tom Morgan and OF Irv Noren. The Yankees would send P Jack Urban on April 5, 1957 to the Kansas City A’s to complete the trade. The A’s sent INF Curt Roberts on April 4, 1957. INF Clete Boyer was sent on June 4, 1957 to the Yankees to complete the trade. Wayne spent the 1957 with the Yankees New Orleans (AA) farm team, before retiring from baseball.

1936 - On a day the New York Yankees would just as soon forget. The Yankees drop a 3-2 decision to the Boston Red Sox in the 1st game of a doubleheader. Then they throw away the 2nd game by allowing the Red Sox to come-behind and tie the score in time for darkness to end it at 7-7 tie. Adding to their 2nd game woes were two errors apiece for rookie CF Joe DiMaggio and C Bill Dickey and a triple plays against the Yankees.

1950 - Purdue University Athletic Director Red Mackey criticizes the New York Yankees for signing his 19-year-old baseball star Pitcher/Shortstop Bill Skowron, who was also expected to be the starting right halfback on the Boilermakers' 1950 Big 10 football squad.

1950 -The New York Yankees acquired veteran 1B Johnny Hopp, who is second in the NL in hitting with a .340 BA from the Pittsburgh Pirates for an undisclosed amount of cash. The Yankees believe that Johnny Hopp will provide late season pennant insurance. Johnny will hit .333 for the month of September of 1950.

1952 - The New York Yankees re-signed former veteran OF Charlie ”King Kong” Keller (1939-1949), after his release from the Detroit Tigers.

1952 - New York Yankees Manager Casey Stengel makes his famous “bus ride speech” to his “loafing Yankees.” The team had just dropped 2 out of 3 games to the hapless Philadelphia A’s (normally easy prey), while their AL rivals Cleveland Indians were on a hot streak, and the result was the possibility that the 1st place Indians might break the AL race open. Fortunately, the Old Professor’s speech had the right effect on the Yankee players, who went on to win 15 of their next 18 games.

1955 - Former Yankees hurler and minor league pitching coach Gil Patterson (1977) was born. Gil Patterson was a 1st round 7th pick by the New York Yankees in the 1975 MLB amateur player draft. He appeared in 10 games for the 1977 Yankees, going 1-2. His MLB pitching career was ended by arm injuries, Gil had eight operations. He began his career in fine form in the 1975 New York-Penn League, going 8-4 with a 1.95 ERA for the Oneonta Yankees. He was 3rd in the league in wins, 4th in ERA and his 97 strikeouts (in 106 innings) led the NY-P. In '76, Gil moved up to the West Haven Yankees. In AA, he was 9-2 with a 2.07 ERA and allowed only 67 hits in 100 innings, throwing the Eastern League's only no-hitter of the season on June 28 against the Williamsport Tomahawks. Had he qualified, he would have been 4th in the league in ERA. Gil was promoted to the Syracuse Chiefs; Patterson was 7-2 with a 2.92 ERA and completed 6 of 10 starts. He was 2-1 with a 4.82 ERA for the Chiefs in '77 mixed in with his season in the MLB. He tried to come back in the low minors in the early 1980's, even trying to learn to pitch left-handed. The comeback started on a strong note, as he was 5-2 with a 1.58 ERA for the 1980 GCL Yankees, finishing 4th in the Gulf Coast League in ERA. He was 1-4 with a 3.20 ERA for the 1981 Fort Lauderdale Yankees and then 1-1, 1.33 ERA for the 1982 Fresno Giants to complete his comeback bid. He was 33-16 in his minor league career. He took a job parking cars at a restaurant that George Steinbrenner went to. Steinbrenner offered him a job as a minor league coach in the Yankees minor league system.

He began coaching in 1984 with the Oneonta Yankees, but was fired after the season for refusing to let Al Leiter pitch with a sore arm. He moved in 1991 to the Oakland A’s organization. He was the pitching coach for the Madison Muskies in 1992-1993 and the West Michigan Whitecaps in 1994. In 1996, he was the roving minor league instructor. He joined the Arizona Diamondbacks organization as minor league pitching coordinator from 1997 to 2000. In 2001, he got a job with the Toronto Blue Jays as the bullpen coach (2001) and then as pitching coach (2002-2004). In 2005 he was a coach for the Columbus Clippers (AAA) and in 2006 with the GCL Yankees. "He's one of the best pitching coaches anywhere, because he knows how hard pitching is, and he knows what a pitcher goes through to get to the big leagues." - Al Leiter, speaking about Gil Patterson. He is the current pitching coach for the Trenton Thunder (AA) in the Yankees organization.

1960 - Former Yankees minor league P Tim Birtsas was born. The New York Yankees signed Tim Birtas in 1984 as 2nd round MLB amateur player draft pick. He never appeared in a MLB game for the Yankees. He was traded to the Oakland A’s in 1984 as part of the Yankees player package for A’s All Star OF Rickey Henderson.

1961 - The New York Yankees top the expansion Washington Senators by the score of 6-1, sending the Nats to their 20th defeat in their last 21 games. Mickey Mantle's HRs for his 51st of the 1961 AL season. The Yankees victory, coupled with a Detroit Tigers doubleheader loss, puts the Yankees ahead by 7 1/2 games in AL.

1964 - The New York Yankees acquired veteran reliever Pedro Ramos from the Cleveland Indians as pennant insurance. The Indians get 2 players to be named later: P Ralph Terry on October 12th, and P Bud Daley on November 27th. Pedro Ramos will help the Yankees win the AL Flag, but will be unable to appear in the 1964 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Letting go Ralph Terry will be a mistake; he will win 18 games for the Cleveland Indians in 1965. Bud Daley was washed up; he had never fully recovered from his pitching arm injuries.

1964 - The Kansas City A’s hurler Blue Moon Odom makes his MLB pitching debut, as Mickey Mantle greets him with a 3-run opposite field HR in the 1st inning. The Yankees hang on to win, again beating the A’s by a 9-7 score.

1971 - The Detroit Tigers tie a MLB record by using 6 pinch hitters in the 7th inning, but still lose 6-5 to the New York Yankees anyway.

1975 - Former Yankees P Randy Choate (2000-2003) was born. He was a 5th round draft pick by the New York Yankees in 1991 MLB amateur player draft. Randy went 3-2 in 77 games for the Yankees, before being traded in the winter of 2003 to the Montreal Expos as part of the Javier Vaquez deal. Randy is currently with the Florida Marlins, working out of their bullpen.

1977 - The Cleveland Indians break an 18-game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader from the New York Yankees by the scores of 4-3 and 5-4. The Indians stage their 1st “Hate The Yankees Hanky Night”, which increases the team’s game attendance to 28,184 fans, triple of the normal Indian home game attendance.

1978 - The New York Yankees win 4-2 over the Detroit Tigers, bringing the team within 4 games of 1st place Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

1989 - Deion Sanders, the 5th player selected overall in the 1989 NFL Draft, hits a HR as the New York Yankees rout the Seattle Mariners at the Kingdome by the score of 12-2. Five days later in his NFL debut with the Atlanta Falcons, the Yankees rookie returns a punt 68 yards for a touchdown.

1999 - New York Yankees starter Ed Yarnell goes 6 innings against the California Angels to pick up his only Yankees career victory, winning the game by the score of 8-3. Derek Jeter and DH Darryl Strawberry lead the Yankees hitting attack with solo HRs.

2000 - At Kansas City, Yankees beat the Royals by the score of 10-5, behind Doc Gooden’s Five-inning relief job for New York starter David Cone. The Yankees hitting attack is led by HR’s from Clay Bellinger, David Justice and Scott Brosuis. The Royals starter Jeff Suppan takes the loss.

2001 - At the Sky Dome in Toronto, Yankees ace starter Roger Clemens picks up his 19th victory of the 2001 AL season defeating the Blue Jays by the score of 4-3. Yankees closer Mo Rivera picks up his 44th save of 2001 AL season. Yankees OF David Justice hits a 2-run HR to pace the Yankees hitting attack.

2002 - At Yankee Stadium, Yankees starter David Wells picks up his 16th victory of the 2002 AL season, pitching a complete game, defeating the Detroit Tigers by the score of 8-2. Yankees 1B Jason Giambi goes 3 for 4 with a HR, 2 RBI’s to lead the Bronx Bombers hitting attack.

2004 - The New York defeats the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by the score of 7-4 behind starter Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, who gives up 2 hits, 2 runs with 5 strikeouts in 7 innings. Yankees reliever Paul Quantrill finishes up the game, picking up his 1st save of the 2004 AL season.

2008 - Seattle Mariners rookie P Brandon Morrow does not allow a hit until 2 outs in the 8th inning in his MLB debut. Yankees hitter Wilson Betemit spoils the no-hit bid as Morrow tops the New York Yankees by the score of 3-1.

2010 - The Toronto Blue Jays end the New York Yankees' 8-game winning streak with a 7-3 win at New Yankee Stadium. Vernon Wells and Aaron Hill hit two-run homers to give the Blue Jays an early lead while Jays hurler Brett Cecil out-pitches Yankees starter Phil Hughes for the win.

September 6th

1912 - Former Yankees minor league OF Vince DiMaggio was born (1912-1986). Vince was the older brother of MLB stars Joe and Dom DiMaggio. Vince originally came up with the Boston Braves in 1937. He had played in the minors with the San Francisco Seals (PCL). He was traded to the Yankees, Joe's team, in February of 1939, but he never played in a MLB game for the team. Most of the 1939 baseball season was spent in the minors, where he showed substantial power for the Kansas City Blues. He cranked out 46 HRs, the 2nd-highest total to that point by a right-handed hitter in the American Association, leading the AA by 13 over Phil Weintraub. As the top power threat on the most successful AA team ever (judging by total wins), Vince also led the league with 136 RBIs, 2 more than Ab Wright. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds by the Yankees in August of 1939, he played 8 games for the Reds, hitting just .071.

1921 - Former Yankees 1B Jack “Stretch” Phillips (1947-1949) was born. 1B Jack Phillips was signed by the New York Yankees in 1943, spending that summer with the Norfolk Tars (Piedmont League). He missed nearly all of 1944-1945 seasons due to military service. After World War II, he returned to baseball spending the next several seasons with the Newark Bears (AAA). He reached the MLB with the Yankees in 1947. He won a World Series ring in his rookie campaign. Jack appeared in the 1947 World Series against the Dodgers, he had 2 at bats with no hits. He played in 63 games at 1B for the Yankees, before being sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates in August of 1949. He was hitting .302 at the time of the trade. Following his playing days, Phillips managed for several seasons in the minor leagues. Then in 1965, Jack became baseball coach for 24 years at his alma mater, Clarkson University, retiring after the 1988 spring season. On May 3, 2008, Clarkson honored Phillips by re-naming its baseball facility "Jack Phillips Stadium at Snell Field."

1924 - Former Yankees minor league OF Jim Fridley was born. On December 1,1954, Jim Fridley was sent by the Baltimore Orioles to the New York Yankees to complete an earlier deal made on November 17,1954. The Baltimore Orioles sent players to be named later, Pitchers Don Larsen and Bob Turley, INF Billy Hunter to the New York Yankees for players to be named later; Pitchers Harry Byrd, Jim McDonald, INF Willy Miranda, Catchers Hal Smith, Gus Triandos and OF Gene Woodling. Jim never played for the Yankees at the MLB level; he would play for the Yankees AAA team, the Denver Bears (American Association). On May 30,1957, Jim was purchased by the Brooklyn Dodgers from the New York Yankees.

1936 - At Fenway Park, the New York Yankees drop a pair to the Boston Red Sox by score of 1-5 and 4-2. In the opener, Red Sox starter Wes Ferrell coasts to a win, allowing 14 hits and occasionally lobbing the ball to the plate. Red Sox slugger Jimmie Foxx's 37th homer starts the scoring. 1946 - Former Yankees reserve C Fran Healy (1976-1978) was born. Fran Healy was obtained from the Kansas City Royals for P Larry Gura. He was a back-up catcher for Thurman Munson (1976-1978.) He appeared in 74 games, hitting .250, before being released by the Yankees in May of 1978. Also Fran became a close friend to Reggie Jackson. Fran would later, became a broadcaster for the Yankees after retiring as MLB active player.

1954 - The New York Yankees used a record 10 pinch hitters during a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees came from behind to capture the opener by the score of 6-5, thanks to a pinch hit HR by Joe Collins, but they dropped the second game by the score of 7-6, after blowing a 6-0 lead.

1954 - Former Yankees Minor League manager Gary Tuck (1996) was born. Gary Tuck played 3 seasons as a catcher in the Montreal Expos organization. After his playing days ended, he was an assistant baseball coach at Arizona State University. He was a minor league manager and coach for the Houston Astros. With the New York Yankees, Gary Tuck managed the 1996 Oneonta Yankees in the New York-Penn League. Gary has been a MLB bench coach for the 2006 Florida Marlins. In 2007, he became the Boston Red Sox MLB bullpen coach.

1961 - New York RF Roger Maris hits his HR #54 off of Washington Senators starter Tom Cheney as the Yankees win the game by a score of 8-0. Yankees starter Whitey Ford hurls a 5-hit shutout, striking out 7 Senator batters, while picking up his 23rd victory of the 1961 AL season. Yankees Johnny Blanchard hits 2 HRs, while Bill Skowron and Bob Hale each hit HRs.

1963 - In an lefty pitchers duel at Yankee Stadium, New York starter Whitey Ford beats the Detroit Tigers Hank Aguirre by a score of 2-1. Ford picks up his 21st victory in a complete game, giving up only 6 hits, 1 run, while striking out 4 Tiger batters. Harry Bright hits a HR in the 5th inning for the Yankees. The Yankees score a run in the 9th inning to win the game.

1964 - At Kansas City, the Yankees edge the A’s by a score of 3-2. Yankees starter Roland Sheldon picks up his 4th win. Newly acquired reliever Pedro Ramos makes his 1st relief appearance for the Yankees. He picks up his 1st save for his new team. Tony Kubek hits a HR for the Yankees.

1971 - The Boston Red Sox use two entirely different 9-man lineups in a doubleheader with New York Yankees, but neither Red Sox line-up succeeds. The Yankees prevail, winning the doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 3-0.

1973 - The New York Yankees sell the two older Alou brothers to NL teams the same day. Felipe was sold to the Montreal Expos, while Matty was sent to the St. Louis Cardinals. Felipe Alou hit .289 in 131 games in 1971, .278 in 120 games in 1972, but faded in 1973. Matty was a major disappointment for the Yankees hitting .296 in 123 games, but he only had 5 HRs and 28 RBI’s.

1975 - At Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium‚ the Orioles top the New York Yankees by the score of 7-6 in 13 innings though neither Yankees Manager Billy Martin or Yankees catcher Thurman Munson are around at the end. Both are tossed out of the game in the 9th inning dispute with umpires.

1977 - The New York Yankees rebound from a doubleheader loss the night before when they clobber the Cleveland Indians by the score of 8-3. The Yankees big hit of the game is Reggie Jackson’s 3-run HR. The victory keeps the Yankees 2 1/2 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

1978 - The New York Yankees defeat the Detroit Tigers by the score of 8-2 with starter Ed Figueroa picking up his 15th victory of the 1978 AL season. Mickey Rivers leads the Yankees hitting attack by going 3 for 4 and driving in 3 runs. After the game, the Yankees head up to Boston for an important AL East 4 game division series with the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

1980 - The New York Yankees defeat the California Angels by the score of 7-4 behind the starting pitching of Tommy Underwood with relief help from Ron Guidry and Goose Gossage. Underwood picks up his 12th victory, while Rich Gossage records his 23rd save of the 1980 AL season. The Yankees hitting attack is led by HRs by Oscar Gamble and Bobby Brown.

1981 - Despite having won the 1st-half AL pennant, New York Yankees Manager Gene Michael is replaced by Bob Lemon, who managed the club in 1978-1979. The Yankees are under .500 in the second half of the 1981 AL season.

1996 - At Yankee Stadium, the Yankees edge the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 4-3 on Cecil Fielder’s 8th inning HR off of Blue Jay reliever Risley. Jimmy Key starts the game for the Yankees, going 6 innings, giving up only 1 run. Yankees reliever Mo Rivera goes 3 innings in relief, picking up the victory.

2002 - At Yankee Stadium, Yankees starter David Wells picks up his 16th victory of the 2002 AL season, pitching a complete game defeating the Detroit Tigers by the score of 8-2. 1B Jason Giambi goes 3 for 4 with a HR, 2 RBI’s to lead the Yankees hitting attack.

2003 - At Yankee Stadium, veteran hurler Tim Wakefield allows 4 hits in 7 innings as the Red Sox wallop Roger Clemens to move 1 1/2 games behind the Yankees in the AL East. Nomar Garciaparra hits a 2-run HR to ignite a 6-run 4th inning. Luis Sojo‚ who appeared in the Yankees' old-timers game earlier in the year‚ pinch hits for Jason Giambi in the 9th inning and fouls out.

2004 - The New York Yankees defeat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by the score of 7-4 behind starter, Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, who gives up 2 hits, 2 runs with 5 strikeouts in 7 innings. Veteran reliever Paul Quantrill finishes up the game for the Yankees, picking up his 1st save of the 2004 AL season.

2008 - Former Yankees minor league OF Tommy Holmes passed away. A Brooklyn native, OF Tommy Holmes was the son of a boxer and boxed himself as a youngster. Following high school, he played semi-professional baseball; until he was signed by Yankees scout Paul Krichell in 1937. Holmes began his pro career in 1937 with the Norfolk Tars, hitting .320 with 25 HRs with 111 RBIs. The next summer, he hit .368 with the Binghamton Triplets to win the Eastern League batting crown. He then spent the next 3 seasons with the Newark Bears (AAA), hitting over .300 each year, but found his path to the MLB blocked by a talent-laden Yankees outfield that included Joe DiMaggio, Tommy Henrich, Charlie Keller, and George Selkirk. Following the 1941 MLB season, Tommy Holmes was traded to the Boston Braves for 1B Buddy Hassett and OF Gene Moore. He soon became a regular in the outfield and spent the next decade playing for the Braves.

September 7th

1889 - Former Yankees OF William “Bill” Holden (1913-1914) was born. Bill Holden hit .242 in 68 games for the Yankees, before moving on to the Cincinnati Reds in 1914.

1894 - Former Yankees reserve OF Joseph “Shags” Horan (1924) was born. Joe Horan hit .290 in 22 games for the Yankees in 1924.

1908 - On Labor Day, Washington Senators Manager Joe Cantillon starts “the Big Train” in place of one pitcher who is sick, and another who returned to Washington, D.C. to be with his sick wife. Only 3 Senators' pitchers made the trip to New York City. Walter Johnson shuts out the Highlanders for the 3rd time in 4 days by the score of 4-0, topping Jack Chesbro and allowing just 2-hits and no walks. In the 3 games, Walter allows 12 hits, walks one, and strikes out 12 Yankee batters. Johnson will pitch 130 shutouts during his HOF MLB career, 23 more than runner-up HOF P Grover Alexander. This is one of a record (that was later topped in 1972) 7 shutouts tossed today, out of 16 games.

1924 - Former Yankees minor league C Roy Partee was born. On December 13,1948, Roy Partee was traded by the St. Louis Browns along with P Fred Sanford to the New York Yankees for C Sherm Lollar, Pitchers Red Embree and Richard Starr and $100,000. Roy never appeared with the Yankees at MLB Level, he was sent to AAA.

1925 - After apologizing to his New York Yankee teammates yesterday, slugger Babe Ruth makes his 1st appearance in a week, collecting 1 hit in a 5-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

1926 - The Boston Red Sox lose their 17th game in a row, losing by the score of 4-2 to the New York Yankees.

1927 - After blasting 3 HRs in a doubleheader split with the Boston Red Sox the day before, Babe Ruth hits 2 more HRs in a 12-10 win, giving him a record-tying 5 HRs in 3 games. He leads his Yankees teammate Lou Gehrig with 49 HRs to 45 HRs.

1928 - The stumbling New York Yankees drop a pair to the Washington Senators, losing by scores of 11-0 and 6-1. Nats starter Bump Hadley tosses the shutout and adds 3 singles. Fred Marberry wins the 2nd game over Waite Hoyt, for his 2nd win over the Yankees in 5 days. Yankees, which led the AL by 13 1/2 games on July 1st, are now tied with the Philadelphia A's.

1931 - In the morning game of a doubleheader in Philadelphia, the Yankees begin with 8 walks and score 8 times in the 1st inning on only 2 hits. Rommel, the 4th A’s hurler in the frame, retires Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Ben Chapman on strikes. The Yankees win the game by a score of 15-3. In the 2nd game, Ruth and Gehrig bang 6th-inning HRs off of former Yankees starter Waite Hoyt. New York Yankee slugger Babe Ruth adds another Hoyt HR blow in the 9th inning, his 40th HR. The Yankees roll to a 9-4 victory over the 1st-place A's.

1932 - New York Yankees outfielder Babe Ruth is hospitalized with pains in his side. The Yankees slugger will be out of action for 5 days.

1934 - New York Yankees 1B Lou Gehrig and the Philadelphia A’s OF Jimmie Foxx, heirs to Babe Ruth's AL HR championship role, are in battle for the 1934 AL HR title. Lou Gehrig hits his 44th HR in Chicago, while Jimmy Foxx hits his 41st HR in Detroit.

1952 - At Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C., Johnny Mize pinch-hits a grand slam HR giving the Yankees, a 5-1 victory over the Senators. Johnny Mize has now HR in all 15 MLB ballparks presently in use (Sportsman Park in St. Louis is used by both the Cardinals and Browns).

1955 - New York starter Whitey Ford continues his mastery with his 2nd consecutive 1-hitter by beating the Kansas City A's by the score of 2-1. Jim Finigan hits a 2-out single in the 7th inning for the A' s only hit. Whitey Ford is the 5th MLB pitcher to throw consecutive 1-hitters.

1961 - New York Yankees RF Roger Maris lays down a bunt and also belts his 55th HR of the year in the 3rd inning as Yankees beats the Washington Senators by the score of 7-3. All of Washington's scores come in the 6th inning on an inside-the-park HR by Tito Francona, off of starter Ralph Terry. When asked by sports writers after the game why he bunted, a testy Maris replies, "Trying to win the game, you stupid cocksucker. Why do you think?”

1963 - With a 3 game lead, the New York Yankees purchased some pennant insurance by acquiring veteran righty hurler Hal “Skinny” Brown from the Baltimore Orioles. Hal would go 0-1 in 2 games for the Yankees. In April of 1963, the Yankees will sell him to the Houston Colt 45s.

1969 - Former Yankees OF/DH Darren Bragg (2001) was born. On June 12, 2001, Darren Bragg was selected off waivers by the Yankees from the New York Mets. He appeared in only 5 games with the Yankees, hitting .250.

1972 - Tommy Harper and Rico Petrocelli club 3-run HRs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 10-4 win over the Yankees and move into 1st place in the AL East ahead of the Detroit Tigers. Red Sox hurler Sonny Siebert adds a HR, as he wins his 12th game of the 1972 AL season.

1974 - In a game with the Detroit Tigers, Graig Nettles loses a single, when it is discovered he is using a corked bat. The Yankees win 1-0 on Nettles' earlier HR in the game. He had used a different bat for the HR.

1976 - The New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4-2 as starter Dock Ellis picks up his 15th victory of the 1976 AL season with Richard Tidrow gets his 8th save. Oscar Gamble’s 2-run HR is the difference in the game, as Yaz and Fisk each hit solo HR’s for the Red Sox off of Yankees starter Dock Ellis.

1977 - The Yankees edge the Indians in Cleveland by the score of 4-3 in 10th inning. Yankees starter Ron Guidry pitches 10 innings, giving up 3 runs, 10 hits, 4 walks, with 5 strikeouts, while picking up his 13 victory of the 1977 AL season.

1978 - The New York Yankees 4 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East arrive in Boston for a crucial 4-game series. The Yankees begin the "Boston Massacre" with a 15-3 rout as 2B Willie Randolph drives in 5 of the 15 runs. The Yankees collect 21 hits off 4 Red Sox pitchers, including 3 hits apiece by Willie Randolph, Thurman Munson and Roy White. Former Yankees, now Red Sox starter Mike Torrez, with 1 inning of work, takes the loss. Ken Clay, in relief of Yankee starter Catfish Hunter, is the winner.

1982 – Future Yankees fan and blogger, Greg Cohen was born---Yes, I’m just one year from 30… ugh. The Yankees lost on this day, falling to Baltimore 7-2. Mike Flanagan beat Mike Morgan.

1985 - Dave Winfield steals home with the winning run in the New York Yankees 3-2 win over the Oakland A's. Following a pitchout in the 7th inning, Winfield gets hung up in a rundown, but he escapes to score.

1996 - Former Yankees reserve INF Willy Miranda (1953-1954) passes away (1926-1996). In 1953, Willy Miranda was purchased by the New York Yankees from the St. Louis Browns. He appeared in 140 games for the Yankees, hitting .237. He was known as a superb glove man; Phil Rizzuto, whom Willy backed up with the New York Yankees, called Miranda one of the best he had ever seen. He was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in the big 17-man trade after the 1954 AL season was over.

2001 - The New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox by a score of 3-2 as starter Orlando Hernandez goes 7 innings for his 2nd win, as closer Mo Rivera picks up save #45 of the 2001 AL season. Boston starter Pedro Martinez goes only 3 innings in his start for the Red Sox.

2004 - At Kansas City, the Yankees score 7 runs in the 9th inning to beat the Royals by the score of 7-3. New York starter Danny Neagle picks up his 6th victory, going 8 innings as the Yankees closer Mo Rivera picks up his 33rd save of the 2004 AL season. David Justice leads the Yankee hitting attack in the 9th inning with a 2-run HR.

2004 - Former Yankees relief P Hal Reniff (1961-1966) passes away (1938-2004). Hal Reniff broke into organized baseball in 1956 at age 17. He played for Kearney in the Nebraska State League (1956), Modesto in the California League (1957-1959), Salem in the Northwest League (1958), Greensboro in the Carolina League (1959), Binghamton in the Eastern League (1960), Amarillo in the Texas League (1960), and Richmond in the International League (1961). In 1959, he led the California League in wins with 21. Overall that year, his best in the minors, he was 21-7 with 12 complete games out of 20 starts, 143 strikeouts, 94 walks and 2 shutouts in 186 innings pitched, with an ERA of 3.19 and a WHIP of 1.366 in 35 games.
Hal Reniff was 22 yrs old, when he made his MLB debut in 1961 with the Yankees. He bounced back and forth between New York and Richmond (AAA) in 1961-1962, but then stayed with the Yankees from 1963 until June 28, 1967, when he was sold to the New York Mets. He pitched in the 1963-1964 World Series. Hal was on the Yankees' roster for their 1961 World Series win over the Cincinnati Reds, but he was not used. Overall in the World Series, he was not involved in a decision, but pitched 3.1 innings in 4 games without yielding an earned run. He returned to the minors with the Syracuse Chiefs (IL) from 1968-1972, ending his baseball career at age 34.

An effective reliever for the Yankees AL pennant winners of 1963-1964, Reniff saved 18 games in 1963 and 9 saves with 6 wins in 1964. In 1963, his best year in MLB, he was 4-3 with 30 games finished and 18 saves, 56 strikeouts and 42 walks in 89.1 innings pitched, with an ERA of 2.62 in 48 games. Hal Reniff is the only pitcher to have pitched for both current New York teams (Yankees and Mets) but not pitch for any other team during his MLB career. Overall in MLB, he was 21-23 with 148 games finished, 45 saves, 314 strikeouts and 242 walks in 471.1 innings pitched, with an ERA of 3.27 in 276 games. Overall in the minors, he was 84-70 with 37 complete games out of 90 starts, 28 saves, 932 strikeouts, 687 walks and 5 shutouts in 1205 innings pitched, with an ERA of 3.99 in 419 games. 

2002 - The Detroit Tigers defeat the New York Yankees by the score of 2-1. The Tigers rookie 1B Eric Munson hits a HR in his 1st MLB at bat.

2009 - 1B Carlos Pena of the Tampa Bay Rays breaks 2 fingers on his left hand when hit by a pitch from Yankees starter CC Sabathia in the opener of a doubleheader swept by the New York Yankees by scores of 4-1 and 11-1.

September 8th

1896- Former Yankees MLB Coach (1934-1948) Johnny Schulte was born (1896-1978). Johnny Schulte was a MLB Coach for the New York Yankees from 1934 to 1948. He was catcher in MLB, playing for the Boston Braves, St. Louis Cardinals and Browns, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs.

1916 - In front the smallest crowd in AL history, Philadelphia A's C/OF Wally Schang, with 23 fans attending the game, becomes the 1st switch-hitter in MLB history to HR from both sides of the plate in the same game against the New York Yankees.

1917 - The New York Yankees traded shutouts with the Washington Senators, winning 2-0 before losing, 5-0. Doc Ayers wins the nightcap, his second shut out in a row over the Yankees and the 3rd time, he's beaten them in 8 days. Nick Cullop takes the loss for New York. In the opening game, Yankees pitcher Ray Caldwell fires his only shut out of the 1917 AL season.

1919 - Boston Red Sox slugger Babe Ruth hits HR #26 off of Yankees P Jack Quinn at the Polo Grounds in New York City, breaking Buck Freeman's 1899 MLB HR mark of 25.

1920 - On their way to Cleveland, the New York Yankees play an exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates and suffer injuries to starters, Muddy Ruel (split finger) and Ping Bodie (sprained ankle). With starter Carl Mays skipping the Indians series to avoid any scenes, The Yankees are short handed. Earlier in the 1920 AL season, Carl Mays had beaned Indians shortstop Ray Chapman in the head at the Polo Grounds, who would later die from his head injury the next day.

1922 - The New York Yankees go back on top of the AL, this time to stay beating the Washington Senators by a score of 8-1, behind starter Carl Mays. While the St. Louis Browns lose to the Detroit Tigers by the score of 8-3. The Yankee win is triggered by Wally Pipp's 6th inning 3-run HR off of Nats starter Walter Johnson, the 2nd HR Wally has dinged off the Senator's ace in 9-days.

1925 - In the nightcap of a doubleheader at Fenway Park, Babe Ruth hits his 300th MLB career HR off of southpaw Buster Ross as the Yankees defeat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 7-4.

1928 - Behind Babe Ruth's 3-run HR, the New York Yankees take the Washington Senators by the score of 6-3, but it is not enough as the Yankees drop to 2nd place in AL.

1932 - The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers replay protested August 1st game as the nightcap of a doubleheader, but end in a 7-7 tie. After the game, Babe Ruth experiences abdominal pains he believes are an appendicitis attack. He will be out of the Yankees starting lineup indefinitely. Yankees reserve OF Sammy Byrd, subbing for Babe Ruth in the opener, collects 5 hits for the Yankees including 2-HRs in a 5-4 win.

1936 - The New York Yankees sweep the Cleveland Indians by scores of 11-3 and 12-9 to clinch the AL pennant on the earliest date ever.

1937 - Trailing the Boston Red Sox by the score of 6-1 in the 9th inning, the Yankees rally for 8 runs with 2 outs and down the Sox by the score of 9-6, in a 2nd game of a doubleheader. The rally started when Don Heffner tripled home 2 runs. PH Billy Dickey doubled Don Heffner home; Jack Saltzgaver (pinch running for Bill Dickey) came home, when Red Sox shortstop Joe Cronin bobbled Frank Crosetti’s ground ball. Red Rolfe walked, and then Joe DiMaggio singled home Crosetti to kayo P Jack Wilson. Reliever Al Thomas threw 1-pitch to Lou Gehrig and watched it sail over the wall for a game-winning HR. In the 1st game, Myril Hoag’s 9th inning single scored the winning run in a 3-2 Yankees victory.

1939 - In another wild adventure with Boston, the Yankees take 4-1 lead into 7th inning, and they are declared the winners, when a terrible thunderstorm causes the umpires to declare the field unsafe. Contemporary sources said the lightning show was the best they’d ever seen.

1951 - At the 1951 Old Timer's Day at Yankee Stadium, former long time Yankees Manager Joe McCarthy (1931-1946) is honored. With the game scoreless in the 7th inning, Mickey Mantle belts a Bob Porterfield pitch into the last row of the RF bleachers, some 460 feet away to break the scoreless tie. Bob Porterfield had started the 1951 AL season with the Yankees, but was traded to the Washington Senators. Yankees starter Ed Lopat shuts out the Senators for a 4-0 win.

1952 - Former Yankees P Larry McCall (1977-1978) was born. On April 10, 1976, Larry McCall was signed as a MLB free agent with the New York Yankees. Larry McCall went 1-2 in 7 games for the Yankees before being traded to the Texas Rangers.

On November 10, 1978, Larry was traded by the New York along with C Mike Heath, Pitchers Sparky Lyle, Dave Rajsich, INF Domingo Ramos and cash to the Texas Rangers for Greg Jemison (minors), MLB OF Juan Beniquez, Pitchers Mike Griffin, Paul Mirabella and Dave Righetti..

1961 - The New York Yankees rout the Cleveland Indians by a score of 9-1 as Mickey Mantle hits HR #52, off of hurler Gary Bell. The Yankees win for their 9th straight game, while the Detroit Tigers lose their 8th game in a row to drop 10 games in back in the AL race. The Tigers purchased veteran 1B Vic Wertz from the Boston Red Sox to shore up their offense.

1963 - Former Yankees INF William “Bill” Knickerbocker (1938-1940) passed away (1911-1963). On February 15,1938, Bill Knickerbocker was traded by the St. Louis Browns to the New York Yankees for reserve INF Don ”Jeep” Heffner and $10,000. Bill appeared in 97 games, hitting .222 as a reserve INF for the Yankees. On December 31,1940, Bill was traded by the Yankees to the Chicago White Sox for reserve C Ken Silvestri.

1973 - Light hitting reserve INF Fred “Chicken” Stanley hits the final grand slam home run in Old Yankee Stadium. A left field foul pole shot off of Milwaukee Brewers hurler Kevin Kobel during a 15-1 Yankees win.

1977 - New York Yankees 1B Chris Chambliss’ 5th inning sacrifice fly provides the margin of victory as the Yankees edge the Cleveland Indians by the score of 4-3 behind starter Ed Figueroa. The victory opened a 3 1/2 game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

1977 - Former Yankees P Oral Hildebrand (1939-1940) passed away. On October 26, 1938, Oral Hildebrand was traded by the St. Louis Browns along with OF Buster Mills to the New York Yankees for C Joe Glenn and OF Myril Hoag. Oral went 11-5 in 34 games for the Yankees. On March 30,1941, Oral was purchased by St. Paul (American Association) from the New York Yankees.

1978 - The New York Yankees continues their rampage of the Boston Red Sox by scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning and 6 more runs in the 2nd inning. Boston makes 7 errors to ease the Yankees to a 13-2 romp. Reggie Jackson hits a 3-run HR and Lou Piniella adds a double, triple and HR to back Jim Beattie's pitching. Red Sox players OF Dwight Evans and C Carlton Fisk both make a pair of errors. The Yankees are now 2 games in back of the Red Sox in AL East.

1979 - New York Yankees 3B Greg Nettles hits an 8th inning HR to help the Yankees and starter Ron Guidry beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 5-4. It is Guidry's 10th straight win of the 1979 AL season.

1983 - New York Yankees OF Steve Kemp will miss the rest of the 1983 AL season with a fractured cheekbone after being struck in the face by Yankees teammate Omar Moreno line drive during batting practice at County Stadium in Milwaukee. Kemp hit just .242 with 12 HRs and 49 RBI in the 1st year of his 5-year, $5.45 million contract. The Yankees win the game, beating the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 6-5.

1984 - The New York Yankees break a 4-4 tie with 2 runs in the 6th inning to roll over the Boston Red Sox by the score of 12-6. New York 3B Toby Harrah paces the 15-hit attack with 4 hits, and Dave Winfield with one of the game's 12 doubles to extend his hitting streak to 20 games, which is and will be an MLB career high for him. Lefty Joe Cowley is the winner for the Yankees.

1992 - Yankees OF Danny Tartabull goes 5 for 5 with 2-HRs and a double; he drives in 9 runs as the Bronx Bombers defeat the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 16-4. Scott Sanderson is the winner for the Yankees.

2000 - The New York Yankees defeat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4-0, behind Roger Clemens. A scary moment occurs in the 9th inning when Red Sox hurler Bryce Florie is hit in the face with a line drive off the bat off of Yankees reserve OF Ryan Thompson. The Red Sox hurler never loses consciousness and leaves the field with blood streaming down his face. Florie suffers a fractured cheekbone and a fracture of the orbital socket, the bone that surrounds the eye, and retinal damage. He will undergo surgery.

2007 - New York 3B Alex Rodríguez continues to lead the Yankees in their 2007 AL playoff hopes. He homers twice off of hurler Brian Bannister. The 1st of the HRs is his 49th of the season and breaks the record for HRs by a 3rd baseman. Previously the Philadelphia Phillies Mike Schmidt with 48 HRs in 1980 and Rodriguez in 2005 had shared the record. The Yankees win by the score of 11-5. Alex Rodriguez had already held the single-season record for shortstops, giving him the high-water mark at 2 positions.

September 9th

1877 - Former Yankees 1B and Manager (1913-1914) Frank Chance (1913-1914) was born. On December 11, 1912, Frank Chance was selected off waivers by the New York Highlanders from the Cincinnati Reds. He appeared in 13 games for the Yankees as player-manager, hitting just .208. He went 57-94 in 1913 for a 7th place finish. In 1914, Frank went 70-84 for a 6th place tie with the Chicago White Sox; the team owners dismissed him.

1880 - Former Yankees P Ambrose Puttman (1903-1905) was born. In September of 1903, Ambrose Puttman was drafted by the New York Yankees from Helena (PCL) in the 1903 MLB Rule 5 Player draft. Ambrose appeared in 29 games for the Yankees, posting a 6-7 record. During the month of April of 1906, Ambrose was purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals from the Yankees.

1895 - Former Yankees PH Daniel “Dashing Dan” Costello (1913) was born. Dan Costello was signed as a MLB free agent with the Yankees in 1913. He only appeared in 2 games for the Yankees, hitting .500. In January of 1914, Dan was selected off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates from the Yankees.

1899 - Former Hall Of Fame Yankees P Waite “ School Boy” Hoyt (1921-1930) was born (1899-1984.) Waite Hoyt was obtained from the Boston Red Sox on December 15,1920. The Yankees traded 2B Del Pratt, OF Sammy Vick, C Muddy Ruel and P Herb Thormmahlen for pitchers Waite Hoyt and Harry Harper and C Wally Schang. He was with the Yankees from 1921-1929, winning 157 games. His best Yankees season was in 1927, when he went 22-7, being the only 20 game winner on the 1927 World Championship team. He would appear in 5 World Series going 6-1 with the Yankees. On May 30,1929, the Yankees obtained OF Harry Rice, P Ownie Carroll and INF Yats Wuestling for P Waite Hoyt and INF Mark Koenig. Waite Hoyt was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1969. After retiring as active MLB player, Hoyt would become a long time broadcaster for the Cincinnati Reds.

1916 - The New York Yankees released veteran shortstop Rube Oldring (1905,1916). Rube had played for the Yankees in 1905 appearing in 8 games, hitting .300. He joined the A’s the next year playing for them, until July of 1916. On July 13, 1916, Rube signed as a free agent with the Yankees. He appeared in 43 games for the Yankees, hitting .234.

1928 - A total of 85,265 fans jam Yankee Stadium to watch the Yankees sweep 2 games from the Philadelphia A's by the scores of 3-0 and 7-3, to move back into 1st place in the AL to stay. George Pipgras is the winner in the 1st game while the Yankee star of the nightcap is Bob Meusel, who takes an Ed Rommel knuckleball pitch out of the park for a Grand Slam HR in the 8th inning. Veteran starter Waite Hoyt was the winner for the Yankees.

1928 - At the of age of 38, veteran New York Yankees Pitcher Urban Shocker dies of pneumonia in Denver, Co, where he had gone for his health. Only now does it become known that he had suffered from an enlarged heart, he was unable to sleep lying down for 2 years. Shocker, who never had a losing season on his MLB career, was 18-6 in 1927 for the Yankees, but appeared in only 1 game for the Yankees in 1928, before leaving the team for health problems.

1931 - To raise funds to help the unemployed in the Depression, the Yankees, Giants, and Robins (aka the Dodgers) agree to a series of benefit games. 60,000 fans, paying regular prices, raise $59,000 in the 1st match-up, as Babe Ruth HRs and the Yankees beat the Giants by the score
of 7-2.

1932 - The Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees by the score of 14-13 in a 14-inning game in which Lou Gehrig hits a grand slam HR and drives in 8-runs. He has reached this RBI feat twice before. Frankie Crosetti strikes out 4 times in the game, including twice in one inning. The Tigers also tops the Yankees, by the score of 4-1, in 5 innings to finally complete the protested game of August 1st, and the tie of yesterday. The Yankees score their lone run in the 3rd inning off of Buck Marrow with their only 2 hits of the game.

1936 - With a double-header sweep over the Cleveland Indians, the New York Yankees clinch their 8th AL pennant. The Bronx Bombers will finish the 1936 AL season 19.5 games ahead of the 2nd place Tigers with a 102-51 AL season record.

1938 - New York Yankees 1B Lou Gehrig plays his 2,100th consecutive MLB game; he has 4 hits to bring his batting average over .300.

1938 - Former Yankees minor league OF and MLB Coach (1987) Jay Ward was born. In 1956, Jay Ward was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur MLB free agent. He never played for the Yankees at the MLB level. On December 2,1958, Jay was drafted by the Kansas City A’s from the Yankees in the 1958 minor league player draft. He was a MLB coach for the Yankees in 1987 for manager Lou Piniella. Recently he has been a manager in minors.

1951 - The Yankees hit 5 HRS, 4 off the Nats' hurler Richard Starr to win the game by a score of 7-5. Mickey Mantle's leadoff HR on the 1st pitch, which starts the scoring, slams against the bottom of the flag holder on the top of the RF stands. Yankees starter Vic Raschi, then wins the nightcap by the score of 2-0, in a game called after the 6th inning because of "darkness." Though Yankee Stadium has lights, unlike the NL, these cannot be used on Sunday. The Yankees (88-49) remain virtually tied with the Cleveland Indians (88-51).

1952 - Former Yankees OF Jerry Mumphrey (1981-1983) was born. On March 31,1981, Jerry Mumphrey was traded by the San Diego Padres along with P John Pacella to the Yankees for OF Ruppert Jones, OF Joe Lefebvre, hurlers Tim Lollar and Chris Welsh. Jerry appeared in 286 games for the Yankees hitting .293. On August 10,1983, Jerry was traded by the Yankees to the Houston Astros for OF Omar Moreno.

1953 - Mickey Mantle's 2-run HR off of Chicago White Sox veteran starter Billy Pierce caps a 7-run 5th inning, as the Yankees win by the score of 9-3 at Yankee Stadium. Returning to CF after the 5th inning, Mantle is photographed blowing a huge bubble with a wad of gum. Yankees Manager Casey Stengel will publicly rebuke the Mick, who will apologize for the indiscretion. However, Mantle does get an endorsement fee from the Bowman Gum Company

1961 - Former Yankees minor league P Jim Corsi was born. The New York Yankees in the 25th round of the 1982 MLB amateur player draft drafted Jim Corsi. He never appeared in a MLB game for the Yankees. On April 3,1984, he was released by the Yankees.

1961 - Former Yankees shortstop Rube Oldring (1905, 1916) passed away. Rube Oldring had played for the Yankees in 1905 appearing in 8 games, hitting .300. He joined the Philadelphia A’s the next year playing for them, until July of 1916. On July 13, 1916, Rube signed as a free agent with the Yankees. He appeared in 43 games for the Yankees, hitting .234.

1961 - On “Whitey Ford Day” at Yankee Stadium, Roger Maris hits his 56th HR, off of Cleveland Indians' Jim “ Mudcat” Grant, as the Yankees come from behind to win the game by a score of 8-7. Yankees score 4 runs in the 9th inning to enable closer Luis Arroyo to pick up his 12th relief win in a row.

1962 – Boston Red Sox OF Lou Clinton makes 4 stellar grabs in the outfield and adds a HR, triple and single as the Red Sox trip the Yankees by the score of 9-3 in 16 innings at Yankee Stadium. Richard “The Monster” Radatz takes over for Red Sox starter Hal Kolstad and pitches 9 innings of relief before leaving in the 16th inning for a pinch hitter.

1965 - Former Yankees DH/INF Todd Zeile (2003) was born. Todd Zelie hit .210 in 66 games before being released by the Yankees.

1970 - Former Yankees P Dan Miceli (2003) was born. On June 25, 2003, Dan Miceli was sent to the New York Yankees by the Cleveland Indians, as part of a conditional deal. Dan went 0-0 in 7 games with 1 save for the Yankees, before being sent to the Houston Astros.

1970 - The New York Yankees placed veteran reliever Steve Hamilton (1963-1970) on waivers. He is claimed by the Chicago White Sox. Steve joined the New York Yankees in 1963, coming from the Washington Senators for Yankees P Jim Coates. He went 34-20 as a Yankees reliever.

1974 - At Fenway Park, the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 6-3, for their 1st win in Boston since July 31,1973. The Yankees have won 2 of 24 games at Fenway Park since 1972.

1977 - New York Yankees starter Mike Torrez notches a 3-hitter, 2-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Cliff Johnson hits a HR for the Yankees, who maintain a 3 game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

1978 - Yankees starter Ron Guidry (21-2) gives up 2 singles in the 1st inning and that's it. The Yankees send 12 runners to the plate and score 7 runs in the 4th inning to win the game by a score of 7-0 against starter Dennis Eckersley cutting the Boston Red Sox lead to a single game. For Ron Guidry, it is his 7th shutout of the 1978 AL season, and the 1st lefty shutout in Fenway Park since 1974 (Ken Holtzman of the Oakland A’s, August 5th). With the Milwaukee Brewers' victory over the Minnesota Twins, the Brewers trail by just 4 1/2 games.

1990 - The Oakland A’s beat the New York Yankees by the score of 7-3 to complete a 12-game sweep of the Yankees this year. The season sweep is a 1st for the Yankees.

1997 - The Boston Red Sox lose to the New York Yankees by the score of 8-6, despite 2 RBIs for Nomar Garciaparra. The RBI’s give Garciaparra a total of 87 on the season for a new MLB record for leadoff men. Former AL batting champion Harvey Kuenn held the old AL mark with 85 in 1956 with the Tigers.

1998 - With the New York Yankees defeating the Boston Red Sox by a score of 7-5, the Yankees move 20.5 games ahead of 2nd-place Red Sox and clinch the AL East title. It is the earliest date in AL history in which a division title has been captured.

1999 - Former New York Yankees Hall OF Fame P James “Catfish” Hunter (1975-1975) passes away from ALS (1946-1999). In 1974, James “Catfish” Hunter was signed by the New York Yankees as a MLB free agent. His best Yankees season was in 1975, going 23-14 with 30 complete games and 7 shutouts. From 1975-1979, Jim went 63-33 as a Yankees pitcher. He was elected to the Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1987.

2009 - Derek Jeter ties the New York Yankees franchise record for hits held by Lou Gehrig, with his 2,721st hit in the 7th inning against the Tampa Bay Rays. He will pass Lou Gehrig in two days. In the game, Jorge Posada belts a 3-run pinch hit HR in the 8th inning to give the Yankees a 4 - 2 win. The Rays, the 2008 AL East champions last year, have now lost 8 straight and are almost out of the AL playoff race.

September 10th

1880 - Former Yankees INF/OF Harry Niles (1908) was born. On November 5, 1907, Harry Niles was traded by the St. Louis Browns along with Fred Glade and Charlie Hemphill to the New York Highlanders for Hobe Ferris, Danny Hoffman and Jimmy Williams. Harry appeared in 96 games, hitting .249 for the Yankees. On August 17,1908, Harry was traded by the Highlanders to the Boston Red Sox for Frank LaPorte.

1910 - Former Yankees minor OF and MLB Manager Eddie Sawyer was born. New York Yankees scout Paul Krichell discovered Eddie Sawyer. He hit .361 for the Norfolk Tars in 1934, 3rd in the Piedmont League. The next season, Sawyer hit .314 for Norfolk Tars; he hit .325 for the Binghamton Triplets. In 1936, he batted .313 for the Triplets while he drove in 98 runs, 8th-most in the New York-Penn League. After starting the 1937 season at .345 for Binghamton, he went up to the Oakland Oaks (PCL), hitting .284 there. Injuring his shoulder, Sawyer returned to Binghamton to bat .299 as an outfielder there in 1938. He became a player-manager for the Amsterdam Rugmakers in 1939. He only struck out 7 times in 458 AB, led the Canadian-American League with 103 RBI and batted .363. His team won the title. The next year, Sawyer hit .329 with 99 RBI in 120 games. Returning to old stomping grounds, Eddie hit .277 for Norfolk as player-manager in 1941; he hit .267 and .280 the next 2 years in the same role with Binghamton to finish his playing career. Moving from the Yankees farm system, where he had been since 1939, he was hired by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1944 to manage the Utica Blue Sox. In 1948, he became the Phillies MLB manager. In 1950, he would lead the Phillies to NL championship defeating the Dodgers, facing his old team in the World Series, the Yankees losing 4 straight games. He managed the Phillies during the 1950’s, returning to the team in 1960, before quitting and being replaced by Gene Mauch after 1 game.

1919 - The Cleveland Indians P Ray "Slim" Caldwell, struck by lightning 2 weeks earlier, no-hits his former New York Yankees teammates by the score of 3-0 at the Polo Grounds.

1921 - Yankees Catcher Wally Schang has 5 of the Yankees' 21 hits as the Bronx Bombers wallop the Philadelphia A's by the score of 19-3. A MLB record-tying 5 Yankees collect 2 hits in the 9th inning: Schang, Mays, Miller, Peckinpaugh, and Ruth. Babe Ruth's 2nd hit, a single, hits Peck for the 3rd out. Yankees starter Carl Mays gives up 13 hits to the A’s in winning his 16th straight game over them.

1922 -The New York Yankees play their farewell home game in the Polo Grounds. An estimated crowd of 40,000 fans overflow the stadium, with another 25,000 fans are turned away. Joe Bush beats the Philadelphia A's, by the score of 10-3 in the opener, while Waite Hoyt edges the A's in the 2nd game, by the score of 2-1. Plans are in the works to expand the ballpark to a 56,000-seat capacity, but this is the last regular season AL game at the Polo Grounds. The Yankees will play their next 18 games on the road, and then open in new Yankee Stadium in April of 1923.

1925 - New York Yankee sluggers Bob Meusel, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig hit successive HRs in the 4th inning of Game 1 versus the Philadelphia A's, all off of P Sammy Gray, as the Yankees win by the score of 7-3. Then Babe Ruth and Ben Paschal hit back-to-back HRs in the 4th inning in game two, but the Yankees still lose the game to the A’s by the score of 5-4.

1934 - Former All Star and AL MVP OF Roger Maris (1960-1966) was born (1934-1985). Roger Maris was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians, then he was traded to the Kansas City A’s in 1958. In December of 1959, Roger Maris was obtained by the Yankees in a trade with the A’s. The Yankees sent OF Norm Siebern, P Don Larsen, 1B/OFMarv Throneberry and OF Hank Bauer for OF Roger Maris, reserve INF Joe DeMaestri and 1B Kent Hadley. In 1960-1961, he won the AL MVP Award, as well establishing a new HR record for AL in 1961 with 61 HRs. Roger would appear with the Yankees in 5 World Series from 1960-1964. He was traded to the Cardinals in winter of 1966 for 3B Charley Smith. Roger would appear in the 1967-1968 World Series with the Cardinals, before retiring as a MLB player. The Yankees retired his No. 9 uniform number. Roger passed away in 1985 from cancer.

1939 - In the first game of a doubleheader with Cleveland, Indians starter Ray Caldwell no-hits the Yankees, winning by the game by score of 3-0.

1950 - Joe DiMaggio becomes the 1st player to hit 3 HRs in one game at spacious Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C., as the Yankees beat the Washington Senators by the score of 8-1. Also Joe adds an RBI double, to pass the 100-RBI mark for the 9th time in his MLB career. The Senators lead the 2nd game by the score of 6-2, when rain-washes it out in the 4th inning. Yankees are now a half-game in back of the leaders with the Boston Red Sox a half game behind the Yankees.

1955 - New York Yankees OF Hank Bauer, pressed into emergency service as a catcher, permits a passed ball, setting up the winning run in a 9-8 loss to the Chicago White Sox. It would be the only time that Hank Bauer appeared behind the plate for the Yankees.

1957 - The New York Yankees obtained reserve OF Bobby Del Greco (1957-1958) from the Chicago Cubs for the waiver price. Bobby would hit .429 for the remainder of the 1957 AL season. He hit .200 in only 12 games in 1958 for the Yankees. On April 13,1959, Bobby was purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Yankees.

1958 - At Cleveland, 50,021 fans turn out for "Back the Indians" night. It is Cleveland's largest crowd since the 1955 AL season, but the Yankees dampen the Indian fans enthusiasm with an
8-3 victory over the Tribe.

1959 - New York Yankees All Star CF Mickey Mantle goes 5-for-6; including a HR in a 12-1 romp over the Kansas City A’s.

1960 - In Detroit, Mickey Mantle unloads a HR cannon shot for 3 runs in the 6th inning, the ball clearing the RF roof and landing in the Brooks Lumber Yard across Trumbull Avenue. Yankees pin a 5-1 loss on Tigers starter Paul Foytack that moves them a half game in 1st place ahead of the Baltimore Orioles, losers today. In June of 1985, Mantle's HR was retroactively measured at 643 feet, and will be listed in The Guinness Book of World Records at that distance.

1961 - The New York Yankees sweep the Cleveland Indians by scores of 7-6 and 9-3, their 12th win in a row at home and the Indians, their 20th loss in a row at Yankee Stadium. Mickey Mantle gets HR # 53 in the nightcap, while Roger Maris is homer-less, stays at the 56 HR mark. The official scorecard credits Mantle with 2 runs scored: it will be discovered in 1995, that 1 of the 2 runs should go to Bill Skowron. In the 2nd game, Clete Boyer sends Jim Perry pitch into the LF corner that hits the lower deck of the grand stand and bounces back into play. While home plate Umpire Joe Linsalata calls it a HR, the other 2 umps agree with Tribe CF Jimmy Piersall who contends the ball is in play. Boyer's HR is interrupted at 3B with a tag out. Jimmy Piersall's contribution in Game 1 is fighting with a fan, who had climbed onto the Yankee Stadium playing field.

1962 - Against the Detroit Tigers veteran hurler Hank Aguirre, Mickey Mantle clouts a 4th inning HR, the 400th of his MLB career to tie the game at 1-1. The Yankees score 2 runs in the 9th inning off of Hank Aguirre to beat the Tigers by the score of 3-1. The victory, combined with a Minnesota Twins loss, gives the Yankees a 3 1/2 game lead over the Twins. The surprising LA Angels are in 3rd place in the AL, just 4 games back.

1963 - Former Yankees P Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson (2005-2006) was born. Randy Johnson was traded by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the winter of 2004 to the New York Yankees for hurlers Javier Vazquez and Brad Halsey, minor league C Dioner Navarro, and cash.
Randy went 34-19 in 67 games for the Yankees before returning to D-Backs in 2007.

1966 - The Yankees obtained P Thad Tillotson and cash from the Dodgers for veteran shortstop Richard “Ducky” Schofield. Thad Tillotson went 4-9 in 2 seasons with the Yankees.

1973 - Former Yankees reserve OF Roy Johnson (1936-1937) passed away. On January 17, 1936, Roy Johnson was traded by the Washington Senators along with P Bump Hadley to the New York Yankees for P Jimmie DeShong and OF Jesse Hill. He appeared in 75 games for the Yankees, hitting .273. On May 11,1937, Roy was selected off waivers by the Boston Bees from the New York Yankees.

1974 - Former AL batting champion Alex Johnson purchased by the New York Yankees from the Texas Rangers yesterday, arrives in Boston during the Red Sox-Yankees game. With the score tied 1-1 in the 12th inning, Johnson socks a pinch-HR to win it for the Yankees by the score of 2-1.

1977 - Toronto Blue Jays 3B Roy Howell leads the way with 13 total bases (2 home runs, 2 doubles and a single) and 9 RBIs as the Blue Jays rout the Yankees by the score of 19-3. Yankees starter Jim “Catfish” Hunter takes the loss to finish the 1977 AL season at 9-9. He will not pitch again for the Yankees until the 1977 World Series against the Dodgers.

1978 - The Boston Red Sox throw 22-year-old rookie hurler Bobby Sprague at the Yankees and the lefty last just two-thirds of an inning walking 3 and allowing 1 hit. The Yankees take the lead and top the Red Sox by the score of 7-4 behind the pitching of starter Ed Figueroa and closer Rich Gossage. The Red Sox collects just 5 hits, including Fred Lynn's 21st HR. The Yankees out-hit the Red Sox 67-21, and outscore them 42-9, in a sweep that leaves the teams in a tie for 1st place in the AL East, and caps a remarkable march to the top from 4th place, 14 games out.

1978 - Former Yankees reserve INF Nick Green (2006) was born. Nick Green hit .240 in 46 games as a reserve INF for the Yankees in 2006. Nick Green is currently with the Texas Rangers. He had started the 2011 MLB season with the Baltimore Orioles organization.

1983 - Current Yankees P Lance Pendleton was born. The New York Yankees in the 4th round of the 2005 MLB amateur player draft selected lance Pendleton. He was the 2nd pitcher taken by New York that year, following J. Brent Cox. Lance had a 3.93 ERA as a college freshman, walking 19 in 18 1/3 IP. In his sophomore year, he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in 3 2/3 IP, he was 1-0. He pitched in the 2004 College World Series with Rice University. He was 5-3 with 2 saves and a 3.69 ERA his junior year. He made his professional debut with the 2005 Staten Island Yankees, going 1-0, 2.33 in 9 games. He then underwent surgery on his right elbow and missed the entire 2006 season. Starting back at square one, he made 8 appearances with the 2007 GCL Yankees, the lowest rung in the Yankees' minor league ladder, before being assigned to the Charleston RiverDogs of the South Atlantic League in 2008. There he was 7-9, 3.52 in 28 games, striking out 119 in 128 innings. He had a very good 2009 season split between the Tampa Yankees (A) and Trenton Thunder (AA); in 28 games (26 starts), he was 12-8 with a 3.14 ERA in 149 innings, striking out 130 batters, the highest total in the Yankees organization that year. He made the end-of-season Florida State League All-Star team; the other right-handed starters picked were Amaury Rivas and David Bromberg. Pendleton continued to stake his place as one of the Yankees' top pitching prospects in 2010, reaching AAA on the strength of a combined 12-5 record and a 3.61 ERA between Trenton (AA) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA).

He struck out 111 batters while allowing only 95 hits at Trenton before his promotion to AAA. 2010 - The New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers set a MLB record by using a combined 19 pitchers in 13-inning game, won 6-5 by the Rangers in Arlington, TX. Scott Feldman, normally a starter, records the win by pitching a scoreless 13th inning as the 11th hurler used by Texas, which itself ties a MLB record. The Rangers win the game when Nelson Cruz leads off the bottom of the 13th inning with a homer off of Yankees reliever Chad Gaudin.
