Mike Mussina got the start for the Yanks, and did not pitch well. Moose gave up five runs on five hits and one walk in 5.1 IP. Mussina also gave up two home runs to Mike Jacobs. Not the best way to end the spring for Mike Mussina, hopefully it's not a sign of things to come. ... Latroy Hawkins continued his very good spring, throwing .2 of a inning and only allowing one hit. ... Johnathan Albaladejo pitched a scoreless inning, he allowed one hit and struck out one. He will start the season in Scranton ... Edwar Ramirez, who will also start the year in AAA, also threw a scoreless inning.

MARLINS HITTING
Next up for the Yanks is the final game of the spring training schedule, another matchup tomorrow against the Marlins at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. Phil Hughes gets the start for the Yanks, and will go up against Marlins prospect Chris Volstad. First pitch is set for 6:10 p.m. and the game can be seen on MLB.TV
I don't think Moose was as bad as it looks. Aside from the two home runs (which you obviously can't take away), five hits in 5+ innings isn't bad. Also, one of those five hits was an infield bunt single.
ReplyDeleteOn top of that, his pitch count was good, and his ball to strike ratio was great (73 pitches, 48 strikes - 25 balls) and he only walked one batter. 6 base runners in 5 1/3 innings isn't bad at all.
The two HRs are the only thing in this game that I'd be unsettled about, but it was the same guy, so you could chalk it up to "one of those matchups" or a guy who was just seeing the ball well tonight or whatever.
I'm not too worried about Moose. I like the way he's throwing the ball, and from what I've seen his control has been much improved from last season and he's hitting spots with his off speed pitches. I think he's going to have a good enough season to win 15 games or more as long as he gets close to 30 starts.
You have a point, even though some of the outs were deep fly balls/hard hit balls, or at least that's how John Sterling made it sound. But he has been pretty good this spring.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about 15 wins, though, I'm gonna say he wins 12.
