The Yankees picked up their 3rd win in a row with a 13-2 beating of the Seattle Mariners tonight at The Stadium. Andy Pettitte pitched well, and was able to pick up his first win in 6 starts. In 6 innings he allowed just 2 runs on 8 hits and struck out a season high 9 batters. The key tonight for Pettitte was when he got in trouble he didn't let things get out of hand, unlike previous outings where he allowed 3 and 4 run innings.
The bullpen did their job again, Latroy Hawkins pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th, and Edwar Ramirez pitched a scoreless 9th.
MARINERS PITCHING
The Yankees' offense racked up 13 runs on 13 hits tonight, the most they've scored since the 15 runs they scored against Boston on April 16th at Yankee Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 the Yankees put their first runs on the board on a 3-run HR by Shelley Duncan in the bottom of the 2nd. They added 2 more in the bottom of the 4th on a 2-run single by Robinson Cano.
But in the 5th things really got out of hand for Seattle. The inning may not have been as big had it not been for great base running by Derek Jeter. With runners on 1st and 3rd and nobody out Alex Rodriguez grounded one to third, M's 3rd baseman Adrian Beltre has Jeter caught in between 3rd and home, but Jeter was able to stay in the run down long enough to allow the other runners to move up to 2nd and 3rd. The way the Mariners were pitching the still probably would have had a big inning, but Jeter's great base running needs to be pointed out.
The Yankees offense rolled from there; Hideki Matsui drove in 2 with a singe, three batters later Robinson Cano drove in another with a single, Chad Moeller hit a 2-run single, two batters later Bobby Abreu also drove in 2 with single, and Alex Rodriguez capped off the rally with a RBI single of his own. After it was all said and done the Yankees sent 13 men to the plate and scored 8 runs, a season high for an inning.
MARINERS OFFENSE
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hideki Matsui: (3-for-5, 3 R, 2 RBI, and an outfield assist)
HONORABLE MENTION: Andy Pettitte (6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 9 K) and Robinson Cano (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI, R, BB)
A few more positive notes on the night: the Yankees beat a lefty for the third straight game and they won another game when to opposing team scored first, two things they have not been able to do much of so far this year.
Game two of the three game set is tomorrow afternoon in the Bronx. Mike Mussina starts for the Yankees and he will go up against Mariners right-hander Carlos Silva. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m., and the game can be seen on YES and heard on WCBS 880.

im glad we've faced nothing but lefties the past few weeks, this team is really starting to plant those oppo singles in good spots, and with this lefty leaning lineup, its something well need.

The bench also needs to wake up. How useless is Morgan Ensberg at this point?
