Mariano Rivera has decided to have arthroscopic shoulder surgery on Oct. 6 to remove a calcification on the AC joint. Rivera is expected to be ready for spring training. He'll be ready by spring training, so nobody should be that concerned. There are always added concerns about a pitcher's shoulder, but Mo should be fine.
Any time you hear the words "shoulder" and "surgery" in the same sentence when it comes to a pitcher, you freak out, but this isn't a structural issue. Calcification, bone spurs, those sort of things are different, and in this case I would think the only thing that would result from this is Mo pitching with less "sorness" in 2009. No worries here unless we hear something different.
