In the AFL the Peoria Javelinas lost to the Surprise Rafters 5-3: Box Score - Recap - Game Story
Phil Hughes started for the Javelinas and pitched great. In 5 innings he allowed no runs on just one hit, did not walk a batter, and struck out 8. He was perfect through 4.2 IP before he allowed a single. He threw 59 pitches, 41 of them for strikes. His ERA in the AFL is now down to 4.08.
It was his first starting since the AFL All-Star game on Oct. 24th. He missed his last turn in the rotation due to a torn fingernail. Apparently it's OK.
The Rafters are not exactly the 1927 Yankees, so this isn't necessarily a sign of things to come with Hughes. But it is good to see that Hughes was throwing strikes and didn't walk anybody. Scouts down in Arizona have been saying his command has been off, so maybe he's getting that in order.
Kevin Russo went 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.
Austin Jackson went 1-for-4, and he stole a base.
Other Yankees players are playing in the Venezuelan, Mexican and Dominican winter leagues. Here's a run down of the players in each league:
Venezuelan League: Edwar Gonzalez, Francisco Cervelli and Carlos Mendoza are playing for Cardenales de Lara. Reegie Corona and Victor Zambrano are on Navegantes del Magallanes. And Edgar Soto is on Aguilas de Zulia.
Dominican League: Bernie Castro, Matt Carson and Wilkins Arias are playing for Aguilas Cibaenas. And Jhonny Nunez, Jose Valdez, Amaury Sanit and Oneli Perez are playing for Tigres del Licey.
Mexican League: Justin Christian is playing for Caneros de los Mochis. And Walter Ibarra is on Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

Who cares. It means nothing. I'd trade him for Peavy while he has any value. Too injury prone and needs glasses to pitch at night.
