From MLB Trade Rumors:
Here's more of what Olney and Gammons had to say:10:28am: Buster Olney and Peter Gammons say Teixeira's decision is "seemingly imminent." The journalists say the Orioles' negotiations for Tex "appear dormant." They suggest the Yankees are lurking in case Boras offers Teixeira to them at a discount (or perhaps just to drive up the price for Boston).
10:20am: According to Thom Loverro of the Washington Times, "there will be an announcement today regarding the future of free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira." Loverro says there are strong indications the Red Sox will be the victor, though it's unclear whether those indications are based on inside information.
He said all along he wanted to know where he would be playing by Christmas and it appears that he will. Hopefully that place is the Bronx, and at the very least not Boston. The Yankees made an initial offer to Teixeira, a proposal not close to the others, before they withdrew their bid, and they have maintained contact with the agent, Scott Boras. Three years ago, Carlos Beltran was a free agent, and near the end of his negotiations with the Mets, he offered to sign with the Yankees for a six-year, $96 million deal, or more than $20 million less than what the Mets had offered. The Yankees declined the proposal.
With Teixeira's negotiations with the Red Sox last week, in the failed meeting between the team executives and the player, the Yankees are at least preparing for the possibility that they will be presented with a set of parameters by Teixeira that would bring him to New York. If the first baseman gives the Yankees contract figures that absolutely would result in him signing with the Yankees, they want to be ready to respond.
Still, it's possible that the Yankees have remained in the negotiations to nudge the Red Sox, in the same way that the Red Sox loomed on the fringes of the CC Sabathia contract talks to keep their rival honest in the bidding.
Hope its the nationals.. We won't have to see him, and the Red Sox won't have a bat to make Papi look good like Manny did for him.
ReplyDeleteBut something tells me its The Sox.. Theo is pimp GM.. he makes this personal.
Too interesting...
ReplyDeleteThis is an acid test of how well the Yankees are run as an organization.
ReplyDeleteNaa....he'll be an Oriole. Baltimore likes to make those big free agent signings but give the player nothing to help him succeed. (See Miguel Tajada).
ReplyDeletelol
I'll be the RedSaux no doubt, although I'd be happy if he went to the Nationals and ecstatic if the Yankees snag him.

I'm picking the Sox but hoping it's the Nats. What are we supposed to do for a first baseman? Seriously.
ReplyDeleteJohn Heyman just broke the story, Teixera to the Yanks for 180 million
ReplyDeleteI heard 170
ReplyDeleteHoly crap Heyman (and now Olney citing "three" sources) reporting Tex signs with the Yankees. Holy crap holy crap holy crap.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap.
Heyman has it at 8 years for 180 million, Olney is reporting 7 years at 170
ReplyDeleteWow. How sick is this. Cant wait for opening day. Merry Christmas
