No More Options For Melky

According to The Boston Globe, via MLB Trade Rumors, Melky Cabrera is out of options. Here's a breakdown of the options rule for those wondering:
When a player is on a major-league club's 40-man roster and in the minor leagues, he is on "optional assignment." Players have three options and may be sent up and down as many times as the club chooses within those seasons but will be charged with only one option per season. When a player is "out of options," it means he has been on a 40-man roster during at least three different seasons and in his fourth pro season or later, he will have to clear irrevocable waivers in order to be sent down.
So for the Melk-Man to be sent to the minors at all this year, he will have pass through waivers first. They are planning to have him on the 25-man roster anyway, so this may not matter, but it would be nice if they had the ability to send him down if needed without having to put him through waivers.

Think anyone would claim him?

I do.

  2. Melky is the only one in our outfield with a decent arm. and other then melky and bobby has any of our outfielders had an assist in the past two or three years???...do not be shocked if he has a great year...

  3. Melky is 24 years old -- the jury is still out on him.

He had a fine first full season and significantly backslid last year.

In '07, he consistently put the ball in play and came up with meaningful hits. With the offense surrounding him -- and his above-average defense -- the Yankees could afford to give him another two months to see where he stands June 1.

I'd think he might prove to be a valuable, and inexpensive, contributor this year.

  4. I agree. He's got a good (not great) arm and will contribute. But I can still see him getting traded. Just please not for Mike Cameron!

  5. If the Yankees were smart they would trade him now for a catching prospect perhaps. I believe that the twins have a guy named Hernandez in AAA Rochester that would fit the bill
