Brett Gardner is Your Starting Center Fielder

According to Peter Abraham, Joe Girardi has announced that Brett Gardner will be the Yankees starting center fielder. They also plan to have Melky on the roster.

Here's a quote from Girardi, also from Peter:
“Both of them played great. Melky had a tough year last year but he came into camp, was ready to go and played very well. Gardy finished up strong (last season) and had a great camp and we’re just going to go with Gardy.”
This is what most people expected. Hopefully Melky can be productive off the bench. I think he can. Melky said he would do what he could to help the team, but was upset that he wasn't going to start.

  2. your obp numbers are wrong, you cant divide by ABs, you have to divide by plate appearances.. theres no way TEX can bat .314 and post a .483 OBP.. lol

  10. Congrats to Brett he deserved it. He is a young scrappy player, I love his speed in the bottom of the lineup something the team is missing.

With Nick Swisher on the team,Melky will see very little playing time this year. My guess he will be used for pinch running and maybe a defense replacement for Damon.

  11. This doesn't surprise a lot of people. I knew "Gardy", as Joe calls him, would become the starting centerfielder and I think this is a good choice. Gardy has speed, and some pop in his bat. He also looks like he can be a productive hitter in the bottom part of the Bombers' lineup.

  12. I'd like to see them hang on to Melky. I think that he provides decent depth and maybe he can fight his way into the lineup.

  13. I was hopeing that when A-Jax comes up, he'll be in left, Gardy in center, and the Melk man in right. Hopefully that will be the future outfield.

  14. CC, that sounds pretty good. Except, if Melky doesn't improve on his hitting, we should have the X-Man in right for another year.

  15. I think Gardner will be a better hitter than some people think.

With his speed he just needs to make contact he can get a lot of infield hits and he has proven he can drag bunt for a single. He is also hitting the ball harder, Kevin Long really improved his batting stance.

He is a similar player to Jacoby Ellsbury.

  17. Anonymous,

I also agree about Gardner being a better hitter than some expect. He may not have power, which turns a lot of people off, but he has the ability to get on base and hit for average.
