News & Notes

- According to Bryan Hoch, Joe Girardi made it official today, announcing that CC Sabathia would be the opening day start. He also said that CC was in line to start the opener at the new stadium as well.

Also related to the starting rotation: Peter Abraham said that Joba Chamberlain will pitch the sixth game of the season.

Hoch and Abraham also both said the Yankees were "toying" with the idea of having Derek Jeter leadoff and Johnny Damon bat second for the remainder of camp. They liked what they saw of Damon when he was batting second behind Jorge Posada, and they "want to see if this is something they could or should do every day during the season."

- Jeff G. sent me an email with these two great slideshows of pictures of the old stadium set to music. They're definitely worth checking out. Here's the first, and the second.

Stick around and discuss the game

as it happens in the comments section.

  1. Not sure why you would bat Damon behind Jeter. Damon is a classic leadoff hitter and Jeter a classic #2 hitter?

  2. It doesn't make much sense to me either.

  3. Peter Abraham just wrote on his blog that one of the reasons they want to try this is because "Damon is a good pull hitter and adept at advancing runners."

  4. Sixth game for Joba? So does that mean that CC will go the 5th game again? I'm going to the 5th home game (4/20) so will I see CC or Joba?

  5. Wouldn't Gardner-Damon-Jeter-Teix

    Make more sense than

    Jeter-Damon-Teix-Hideki?

Jeter's not a lead off hitter. He has averaged around a 3.7 pitches per plate appearance, opposed to Damon's 4.2, and his speed definitely hasn't increased since his prime.

  6. Maybe he won't lead the league in GIDP this year out of the leadoff spot.

  7. Jeter is one of my favorite players but his double play prowess is reason for concern and Damon, being one of the most productive Yankees last year, can help manufacture a lot of runs in the 2 spot.

  8. So far so good for Jeter the leadoff man, 9-pitch at-bat that leads to a single... And Matsui goes yard, 2-0 Yanks.

  9. Matt, according to Peter Abraham, here's how the first few weeks look as far as starters go:

    April 6 at Baltimore: Sabathia
    April 8 at Baltimore: Wang
    April 9 at Baltimore: Burnett
April 10: at Kansas City: Pettitte
April 11 at Kansas City: Sabathia
April 12 at Kansas City: Chamberlain
April 13 at Tampa Bay: Wang
April 14 at Tampa Bay: Burnett
April 15 at Tampa Bay: Pettitte
    April 16 vs. Cleveland: Sabathia
    April 17 vs. Cleveland: Chamberlain
    April 18 vs. Cleveland: Wang
    April 19 vs. Cleveland: Burnett
    April 20: vs. Oakland: Pettitte
    April 21: vs. Oakland: Sabathia
    April 22: vs. Oakland: Chamberlain
    April 24 at Boston: Wang
    April 25 at Boston: Burnett
    April 26 at Boston: Pettitte

  10. well maybe Jeter's GIDP total will go down now that Damon is behind him... if Gardner is on 1st base, he can steal 2nd alot more often than Damon.. I think we will see alot more hit and runs with Jeter up and Gardner on 1st too.

That rotation is insane.. we better win 95-100 games( hopefully more than that).

    DQ

  11. Wang in front of Burnett? Guess it makes sense to split the power pitchers wtih a sinkerballer

  13. and Pavano will be on the hill one of those games in that series for cleveland ! will he last more than the 4 innings he gave on opening day 2 years ago? i hope not

    ReplyDelete
  14. It might just be me, but I have a horrible feeling he's going to dominate.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Pavano?

Someone will hurt his feelings in the parking lot and he will have to be placed on the 60 day DL.

    ReplyDelete
  16. nice one. liam got hit hard last night. feel bad.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yea, one of the anons attacked him for no apparent reason.

By the way, how good has Ramiro Pena been? I'd almost rather see him as the utility guy over Berroa.
