- UPDATE 7:05 p.m.: Here's an update on some minor league transactions from Chad Jennings:
C P.J. Pilittere has been transferred from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A) to Trenton, and RHP Humberto Sanchez has been placed on Trenton's Disabled List retroactive to the date he was re-signed by the Yankees (5/1).- UPDATE 5:52 p.m.: Another update from Peter Abraham: Posada has a grade 2 strain, and that likely means that a return in 2-3 weeks won't happen. Here's a quote from Jorge:
“It’s disappointing, but I know I can come back,” he said. “But it’s tough on me, it’s tough on me because I worked really hard to come back. I did everything I could with my body to be back. It’s one of those things you can’t control. You try to stay positive but it’s not easy right now.”
As we all know Jorge Posada is headed to the 15-day DL. According to Peter Abraham, the Yankees are saying he will be out for 2-3 weeks, but he also says that "within the clubhouse, the fear is that it could be more like 3-5 weeks."
That really, really sucks.
Francisco Cervelli has been called up to replace him on the roster. He was the only other catcher on the 40-man roster. Cervelli, however, is just hitting .190/.266/.310 with two homers and seven RBI for Double-A Trenton.
If you were wondering, here's a list of free agent catchers that are still on the market from MLB Trade Rumors:
Paul Bako (37)
Gary Bennett (37)
Rob Bowen (28)
Johnny Estrada (33)
Toby Hall (33)
Paul Lo Duca (37) - Type B, not offered arb
Javier Valentin (33)
Not a very impressive list.
- Joba Chamberlain has done well against Boston in his career. Posting a 2-0 record and a 2.78 ERA in seven games (three starts). In one start against the Sox this season Joba pitched 5.1 innings, and allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits, walked four and struck out two. He got a no decision.
- Josh Beckett has made 13 starts in his career against the Yankees and he's 7-4, with a 5.90 ERA. In six starts at Yankee Stadium he's 4-2, 5.66 ERA. He started one game last weekend at Fenway and took a no decision. In five innings he allowed eight runs on ten hits, walked four and struck out three.
Beckett is having a lot of trouble with men on base so far this year. In 68 plate appearances With the bases empty hitters are batting .254/.309/.333 with a homer a five RBI, he's also walked five and struck out 19. With men on batters are hitting .309/.456/.589 with 2 homers and 11 RBI, and Beckett has walked 11 and struck out 12.
- Melky Cabrera has an eight game hitting streak.
- Alex Rodriguez went 3-for-5 in today's extended spring training game. He homered twice, singled, and made several plays in the field.
- Joe Girardi sounded optimistic today when speaking about Xavier Nady possibly returning earlier than expected, "He feels good, and that's good," Girardi said to Marc Carig of NJ.com. "And he hasn't had any setbacks, he hasn't had any problems with the exercise program that they've given him. It might be something. So it might be something where we see him playing earlier than we thought."
- Brian Bruney, on the other hand, did not sound as optimistic. He still believes he's at least two weeks away from returning. "It's an elbow injury, man," said Bruney. "You've got to be careful with elbows. If you do a little bit too much, and you're ready to do it, you're out for a year-and-a-half. You've got to baby them."
- Kevin Youkilis is out with sore back.
- The folks over at InteliCoat Technologies wanted me to pass this info along to my readers. They're holding a Yankees ticket giveaway contest, here's the details:

Huge game tonight. Dont wanna go 0 for 5 against Boston...weather permitting
ReplyDeleteYea, this is a big one. But like I said the other day anything less than a sweep in this series I'd consider a failure, and I still stand by that.
ReplyDeleteAs for the weather it looks a lot more promising than the forecast did last night so I think they'll get the game in.
Big day for Arod went 3-6 with 2homers and fielded couple of plays and posad to mis 3-5 weeks fuck.
ReplyDeleteIt sure looks sucky indeed....
ReplyDeleteMike
toby hall ! he's got some pop
ReplyDeleteUnfuckingbelieable, a shit storm just continues to hit this team. Now let's see how this team fares with two offensively retarded catchers.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Posada can make it back in 3 weeks... I think it's pretty reasonable he does...
ReplyDeleteAs for A-Rod... if he can really return Friday, I think it'd be great for the Yanks. It should lift their spirits considering they're getting their best player and MVP back.
Kevin Cash needs to be on the team.
ReplyDeletewhat is his status i know he was on the 7 day disabled list.
Here's what Chad Jennings said about Cash:
ReplyDelete"Kevin Cash is on the disabled list with a shoulder injury and hasn't played since the first week of the season."
How about we trade Edwar and Veras for a catcher? And we can throw in Berroa too, although he did make a good play last night.
ReplyDeleteLETS GO RED SOX!!!
ReplyDeleteNot a bad idea, She-Fan. Although there's trade value has to be at the bottom right now.
ReplyDeleteHi guys, how's everyone?
ReplyDeleteJust wondering about the weather tonight? Still staying awake very late and don't want to be disappointed when MLB.TV leaves the air to the YES Network and MK just says "It's rained out, see you tomorrow" and I made it to 1 am for nothing.
So, is it raining in the Bronx for those who are there?
Thank you.
Go Bombers.
We may have lost Posada for a couple weeks, but Teixeira is getting hot, Damon has been hot of late, Matsui is hitting well, and if A-Rod comes back strong, we can still stay alive despite all the injuries. And if all goes well, we should have our full team at full strength by the beginning of June.
ReplyDeleteWho would do the trade though?
ReplyDeleteI'd like the yankees to win this game and I'd like them to win it soundly.
ReplyDeleteI dont want the bats to go crazy, I dont want it to be ugly. I want them to start winning in a way that can be dependable and who better to start it against than the Red Sox.
Now Posada is on the DL? The amount of injuries that this team has had is alarming. This tells me that there is something wrong with the training and conditioning program (which I blame on the coaching staff) or with the training and conditioning equipment at the new stadium (which I also blame on the coaching staff). At this rate, I'm thinking of grabbing my glove, heading to the Bronx, and seeing if I can get into the game. Does anyone think there is room on the roster for a 40 year old who has had seven knee surgeries?
ReplyDeleteI'd sign up for that Miller.
ReplyDeleteAnd the domination begins.
ReplyDeleteThat's some range there Jeet.
ReplyDeleteJoba's fastball is sitting at 89-90... Not good.
ReplyDeleteDamn what a terrible start. God this team owns them. And Jason Bay is an absolute beast.
ReplyDelete4-0 Sux Sox. Very good Cashman. You have a potential Rob Dibble on your hands and you put him in the rotation and turn him into the next Steve Trout. He can't "throw" because he's got to "pitch." He's not a finesse pitcher. This settles the argument of where Joba should be. Put him in the bullpen where he can succeed instead of destroying his confidence in this ludicrous attempt to make him a starter. Enough is enough already!
ReplyDeletethe Sox are just flat out better than us... that doesnt mean the season is over. I believe we should win the wild card, and hopefully get hot in the playoffs. But the Sox are clearly the model franchise in baseball. I could see the Sox winning another 2 or 3 World Series in the next 6-8 years or so... 2004 is what started it all. Its still so painful for me to think about that series.
ReplyDeleteHere we go ... Wooh lets go yanks .. show us some of that grittyness cause with our pitching ya may need to score 20 runs tonight just to stay in the game
ReplyDeleteWhat a joke. We get Xavier Nady from the Pirates last season who (of course) is injured and the fucking Red Sox get Jason Bay who (of course) kills the Yankees. Getting swept by Boston twice is an absolute embarrassment especially when 2 games are in the new Stadium. I don't care if this team goes on a run and makes the playoffs at the end of the season, it doesn't mean anything if they can't beat the team that has owned them since 2004.
ReplyDeleteBlow this shit up. Start over from scratch. Everything about this team is garbage
ReplyDeleteWow.....At what point does owner ship start thinking that maybe Girardi sold them a bunch of goods when he showed up with his charts and graphs and presentations during his interview? I'm still betting Eiland goes first though.
ReplyDeletelol are we really going to do this after every start? If it's a bad start the Joba-to-the-pen people are like "see this settles it." Then after a good start the Joba-to-the-rotation people are going to be like "see this is why he should start.
ReplyDeleteWell both reactions are equally ridiculous. If you want him to start, fine. If you want him to relieve, that's fine too. But neither should be based one start.
And he's far from Steve Trout.
Haha Teixeira is such a joke. Homers twice last night, neither of which are clutch, and then strikes out in the 9th when it actually matters. Can you say the second coming of A-Rod?
ReplyDelete0-1 with a K so far tonight Tex, keep it up big guy.
Greg,
ReplyDeleteAt what point does it get frustrating that you waste your time blogging for a terrible team?
I don't like Girardi either, but it's not his fault Joba gave up a four spot in the first inning. The starting pitchers have to start getting the job done.
ReplyDeleteI don't feel like I'm wasting my time at all.
ReplyDeleteIt's frustrating to write about games that they lose, but I love the Yankees, that's not going to change.
Agreed Greg .. But .. I am so sick of this team being beyond Nasty on paper, and not doing what they were hired to do .. WIN !!
ReplyDeleteIt's frustrating, but what can we do? I'm not going to stop rooting or watching, plus there's always the chance that things can fix themselves.
ReplyDeleteGirardi is the dead walking. The pitching is pathetic and texs problems can only be cured by coaching - he's a rock solid player who is just too in his head. Girardi death watch is at 27 games looks like a shoein to drop to 24 tonight. In terms of a business and what the Yankees promise their customers this is completely unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteNice changeup.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, if it was George I'd say you guys are right about Girardi being a goner. But Hal is a lot more patient.
ReplyDeleteIf the division is nowhere in sight at the all-star break, then I think he'll be in trouble.
Empty seats at a Yankees-Sox game? Are you kidding me?
ReplyDeleteThat's so fucked up. The Yankees continue to make themselves look like complete fools, and the worst part is they don't seem to give a shit.
ReplyDeleteDAMON!!!
ReplyDeleteNEW BALLGAME!!!
Nice!
ReplyDeleteThe return of Landsdown Josh.
Meanwhile, Teixeira is still lost.
You know, a good manager might move Teixeira down in the lineup.
ReplyDeletetotally agree with the poster above
ReplyDeleteWow, nice play by Lowell.
ReplyDeletewe may have some rain in the next hour or 2.. im no meteorologist but if u look at the radar theres some rain coming.... the Nationals game was in a rain delay a few hours ago. hopefully it doesnt arrive until after the game
ReplyDeleteYea there's a lot of rain coming this way. Would be nice to at least tie the game in the next two innings because it's supposed to rain all night.
ReplyDeleteThe Nationals game was suspended so I think you guys are right.
ReplyDeleteNice to see 3rd base coach/Designated Fan Thompson just waves everyone in.
ReplyDeleteIt's about to start pouring. Remember it becomes and official game if the Yankees don't score next inning.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Bay won't be so comfortable now. Good job Joba.
ReplyDeleteHe couldn't have done that on purpose. I know a guy like Clemens would, he's hit the bases loaded if he wanted to and still trust himself to get the next guy out.
ReplyDeleteIf it was on purpose good for him. It shows a tons of balls.
They better tie this game right now. The rains is coming.
ReplyDeleteThat might have been the ballgame.
ReplyDeletenow by the time we get up it will be pouring.. couldn't keep him in for 1 more batter
ReplyDeletei hope this is one of those games when they just say fuck it and play through the rain.
ReplyDeleteNice job for Joba after the first. Doesn't change the fact that he gave up those four runs, but still good to see.
ReplyDeleteit was good to see the cocky Joba going right after hitters... go score 2 runs quick!
ReplyDeleteExactly dan don't take any shit from anybody as billy joel would say. and how shitty would it be if the game gets rained out now?
ReplyDeleteMe too.
ReplyDelete2nd and 3rd with one out and they can't tie the damn game. Man they blow.
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to know is what the hell was Molina swinging at? That pitch was a foot inside.
ReplyDeletethat may have been our only chance.. i hate this feeling, not knowing if were gonna get up again or not, and how many times. fucking rain
ReplyDeleteand how many times does the ball bounce into the stands for a GR Double, preventing a run. it seems like it happens to us all the time... Tony Clark ALCS 2004 :(
It's very frustrating that the bounces always seem to go in Boston's favor, but Pena has to at least put the ball in play there. That's was just an awful at-bat.
ReplyDeleteim kind of happy to see Beckett still out there.. Damon has smoked the ball today, and he and Jeter usually hit Beckett very good... Teixeira is a different story. he's terrible vs Beckett
ReplyDeleteAgree. Plus their bullpen is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteOkajima vs. Yankees:
ReplyDeleteDamon: 2-for-8 with a double.
Tex: 2-for-3, 2 RBI
Matsui: 2-for-6
Cano: 4-for-11, 3B, 2 HR, 3 RBI
unbelievable Damon
ReplyDeleteDid anyone notice how hard Lowell tried to force that pitch to the right side of the infield to get the runner over? That's real baseball folks.
ReplyDeleteIs anybody even hear anymore?
ReplyDeleteOMG HOW THE FUCK DO YOU HIT BAILEY? FUCKING MORON.
and we traded him...
ReplyDeleteDamn it, that was a huge run.
ReplyDeleteNICK FUCKING GREEN?!
ReplyDeleteNick fucking Green!
ReplyDeleteHOLY SHIT THIS TEAM SUCKS!
I hate to say it but that was a great piece of hitting. However, Albaladejo sucks.
ReplyDeletejust terrible baseball... we look like the Nationals.
ReplyDeletei had a feeling that Tex would have a Giambiesque HR moment in the rain but i guess my hopes were too high
ReplyDeletei had that feeling too Rich... but I guess it wasnt meant to be.. or maybe it will happen later on?
ReplyDeleteHopefully he will at least get a chance..
ReplyDeleteI second that.
ReplyDeletevery quietly Cano is 0 for his last 12... we really cant afford for him to start slumping
ReplyDeleteGood point, Dan. I knew he hadn't gotten a hit in a while, but I didn't know it was that bad.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Teixeira is due up fifth in the bottom of the ninth, so there's a chance.
Is Mo still alive?
ReplyDeleteIs Girardi trying to ruin this kid?
ReplyDeleteAnd anon, that's a good question.
Feel for Girardi? Is Kay out of his homer mind? I feel bad for this bull pen that has no clue day to day how it will be used. I feel bad for that kid being hung out to dry.
ReplyDeleteGirardi's getting me mad at his bullpen management now.
ReplyDeleteu know what really pisses me off.. we had a chance at winning 4 of the 5 games vs the Sox so far this year, and we didn't win 1(unless we have a miracle tonight). and the 1 game im excluding was the Sunday Night Baseball game, where we only lost by a few runs. eventually we have to stumble upon a win vs these guys, dont u think?
ReplyDeleteRobertson got squeezed twice... should been 0-2 after the first two pitches... look at Gameday...
ReplyDeleteA reliever that gets outs... buried as the last man out of the pen...
ReplyDeleteSaw that dane, you're right, he got squeezed.
ReplyDeletei know dane.. what a joke.
ReplyDeleteso who would u guys like as our manager?
Bobby Valentine, Buck Showalter...?
we could have signed Saito
ReplyDeletePathetic.
ReplyDeleteback to .500... just when u think we'll start to get going, we drop right back down
ReplyDeleteI came up and turned on the ballgame after band rehearsal ended. It was a shitty rehearsal, and when I saw the score I could see that things were going even worse for the Yanks.
ReplyDeleteOh how I beg Hal to so something relatively fast. Our team looks horrible, our manager looks like a lost little boy, our coaches seemingly have no clue, and we keep getting players hurt.
As I said earlier in a few places here (and as Scott also mentioned above), I've got to think the Yanks' training program (set up by coaches and trainers) has something to do with their injuries. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think so....
We are terrible. Oh, boy....
Mike
No Mike you are not wrong, the Marlins got real healthy all of a sudden after Girardi was booted. Players seem to drop like flies around him.
ReplyDeleteBesides that I don't think(With the exception of Pena) any of Girardi's coaches really know how to prepare or train Major League athletes. They may have been great minor league developers but they have no skills that translate on the major league level.
Did Joe Girardi just say he doesn't lose faith in people?
ReplyDeleteYes he did. I don't know what the hell he's talking about.
ReplyDeleteI'm listening to WFAN right now and a caller who was in the bleechers said Joba only warmed up ten minutes before the game. No wonder it takes him so long to settle down. If this is the routine he's allowed to use then the pitching coach has got to go because he is not doing his job.
ReplyDeleteAnd each time it was against Boston, Dan. They were 9-6 heading into Fenway, got knocked back to .500, and 13-11 before this series started.
ReplyDeleteIf that's true Danny, they probably should change that routine ASAP.
ReplyDeleteYou know, Danny, I didn't quite remember about the Marlins and their injury situation until you brought it up. Girardi is the kiss of death injury-wise....
ReplyDeleteAll but Pena must go. We must try to salvage this season as soon as possible. Man oh man....
Mike
