New & Notes

UPDATED 6:57 p.m.: Here's an update on Xavier Nady, Cody Ransom and Jose Molina from NJ.com:

Outfielder Xavier Nady, who suffered a setback while rehabbing in Tampa Monday, "felt much better" Tuesday, Girardi said. He only had pain in his injured right elbow during two throws, Girardi said, and will take Wednesday off before throwing again Thursday.

Other Tampa updates: Catcher Jose Molina, who was pulled from an extended spring training game Monday with pain in his injured left quad, had an MRI Tuesday. The results were sent up to team doctors, who will make a decision tonight if he'll stay in Florida or continue rehabbing back in New York. Reliever Damaso Marte will throw a bullpen session Friday, and third baseman Cody Ransom will go to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Thursday.

- There is a vote going on over at NBCNewYork.com about which new NY baseball stadium is the best, Yankee Stadium or Citi Field. Right now Citi Field is winning 52% to 48% for NYS. The voting ends next Wednesday so go vote!

- In his career against the Rangers, A.J. Burnett is 2-2, with a 4.02 ERA. His last start came against Texas, and it was a very good performance. In six innings he allowed no runs on three hits, walked four and struck out seven.

- Vincente Padilla has made three starts against the Yankees in his career and is 1-1, with a 5.51 ERA. In his only start at the old stadium, he went 1-0, with a 2.70 ERA, allowing two runs on three hits, walked three and struck out six in 6.2 innings pitched. In 2008 he made one start against them and took a no decision. In six innings he allowed four runs on eight hits, walked two, and struck out five.

- Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira both have hitting streaks going. Jeter has a 15-game streak and Teixeira has hit safely in 14 straight.

- The Yankees have not committed an error in a major league record 18 straight games.

- The Rangers placed Josh Hamilton on the DL with a sports hernia.

- The Save Gate Two project hit the mainstream media again today when Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports wrote this article about it. Here's some of the article:
The group wants to preserve Gate 2 of the old stadium as an entry to the planned Heritage Park, which will include a baseball field and two softball fields once the demolition ends. Gate 2 was one of the least-adulterated parts of the stadium in its mid-’70s renovation, and its aesthetics remain: It’s an imposing structure with stunning arches, the perfect gateway for fans to pay tribute to the past while looking across the street to witness the present.

The plan’s beauty comes not just in its attempt to honor the stadium’s history but in how it dovetails with the city’s current strategy. Gate 2 would not cut into the park’s green space. It would cost money to update, certainly, though not an unreasonable amount. And it would bring so much more than the hollow plaques that commemorate edifices that time forgets.
...

The Gate 2 group has spoken with city workers in hopes they’ll consider salvaging something, and the feedback has been positive. Only … well, this is the nation’s biggest city, one that deals with more pressing matters than the preservation of a piece of a baseball stadium, no matter how important and culturally significant it may be, and on the list of priorities, it isn’t high.
...

They are a great franchise in part because they recognize their history. They honor their stars in Monument Park and created a practical replica of their old building with the new one and treat their best living players like royalty. If any team should understand why Gate 2 needs to stand, it’s the Yankees.

  1. Why is Swisher getting the day off? He's actually swinging the bat well over the last few games!

  2. I would really love for the Gate to remain. I mean, that building was a Home for Millions of people, it would only be right to leave a piece there to remind us of our youth.

  3. I see Swish's numbers against Padilla, but I'd still like to see him in the lineup.

    But whatever. No biggie.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I had the same reaction JC, 1st Swisher sends one to CF in Cleveland, which was a bomb. Then the next game, he misses a GS by a foot. And gets to sit today? I question moves like this from Girardi sometimes.

  5. Upon further review it's gotta be his numbers against Padilla. I didn't even notice that until you said something JC. That's gotta be it.

  6. My biggest complaint about Girardi is that he plays and sits certain people at really weird times.

I see now that Swish isn't great against Padilla. But seriously...it's freakin' Padilla. Swisher has been swinging a hot bat and should be playing. You don't sit a guy right when he's starting to heat up.

  7. UPDATE, 5:05 p.m.: Hey, Pete again. Just had to mention this. I’m getting a lot of “Why isn’t Swisher starting? Girardi is a idiot” e-mails from people.

Listen, I love people who read my blog. Here’s to you. But stop thinking you know more about the Yankees than Girardi. Swisher is 1 for 15 against Padilla with five strikeouts. He’s 0 for his last 12 with four strikeouts and a GIDP.

Swisher finally seems to have his swing intact. Why screw him up against a pitcher he obviously can’t hit? Let Gardner start and when the Rangers go to the bullpen, you have Swisher ready and waiting for an at-bat or two.

The Yankees have won 15 of 19, let’s give the manager the benefit of the doubt, shall we?
    From PeteAbes site.

I agree to an extent, but playing manager is so much fun =)

    ReplyDelete
  8. I agree that it's not really a big deal. And I also agree that people on fan forums like to blame the manager way too much. That's why I usually don't post on big sports blogs. (And why I kinda like this smaller, yet fun crowd here.)

I just would've started Swisher, but it's no big deal.

  10. This lineup is stacked with or without Swisher.

Swisher needs a day off anyway. His whole month has been a struggle. And he cant hit at the new stadium.

  12. I had a lengthy arguement with one of my friends about this; who is a Met fan. We agreed to disagree.

He said that New Yankee was a "Corporate heaven of greed and wrong." But really did not have much to say other then that. His tune changed when we went to a game, but was back the next morning.

I went to Citi, I just feel like its a shrine to something thats not the Mets. I mean, Its got the whole Ebbets and Polo feel going on, which is not the Mets, Its got the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, which baffles me. I understand that its Jackie Robinson, but he was a Dodger, shouldn't something like that be left to the team he played for? And Citifield over all just felt dark.I told him all that and argued for hours, he tried to make some "well the dodgers were ny national league and so are the mets.." and so on.

I just feel like for Baseball, Yankee Stadium is the place to be. For history, Yankee Stadium is the place. Its a shrine to the past. I feel like Citi is a rip-off machine, which really only appeals to families. I found the environment pretty bad for my tastes, and probably won't go back there again.

  13. He's swinging a hot bat but u also have Gardy and the Melk man that have been doing a good job with the bats too.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Gardner is better suited for the bench. The less he plays, the better.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I missed Francesa today..did he eat crow about Joba? or say it was a fluke?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Why would he "eat crow"? Because Joba threw his first quality start in a month?

How about we see him do this on a regular basis before we start saying he should definitely be a starter? He's had two solid starts this season, and that's it.

  20. Anyone else having problems with YES? My picture keeps freezing.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Jeters on the spot with placement for that one geez I thought he might get the call for a second.

    ReplyDelete
  22. A united fail again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Another great call from the umps.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Posada, what the hell, ugh you frustrate me sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can't wait to here you guys supporting Posada on this one.

I am not sure that I have ever seen a worse baserunning error than that. Posada is the MOST worthless, stupid, idiotic player to ever grace this team. He continually does stupid things, has no real concept of baseball and can't execute simple plays. What a friggin moron. 10+ years of his garbage. You're a moron Cashman for signing this idiot to a 4 year deal. Right up there with Marte and Nady. DUMBASS

    ReplyDelete
  26. There's nothing to support, it was a stupid play.

    ReplyDelete
  27. There is no reason for not having 2nd and 3rd right now other JORGE POSADA. It wasn't a difficult read, it was a SIMPLE read.

    ReplyDelete
  28. At worst it should have been first and second... Good to see Gardner come through and get that run in.

    ReplyDelete
  29. homerun or BUST.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Kay is a clown. He goes "hot night in the Bronx"...its 73 degrees!! Idiot

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nice, he hit the cutoff man. Finally!

    Good job Melky.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jesus. AJ you suck.

    ReplyDelete
  33. We Want Wang!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Maybe Burnett can pitch the 8th?

    ReplyDelete
  35. He can't locate the curve so they're just sitting fastball and mashing it. This is a big batter in this game.

    ReplyDelete
  36. flirting with diaster there AJoke Burnett.

    ReplyDelete
  37. He's very lucky that stayed in the yard.

    ReplyDelete
  38. He needs that curve. You're right, He is predictable without it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Not that it was good but that inning had a chance to be very ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I miss Cervelli. Posada has sucked some life out of this team it seems.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jorge has had a miserable game so far... stupid base running, three terrible throws, and the Yanks first error in 19 games.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Holy f'n melt down in the 3rd. It was much worse in person. Its a myrical aj didn't give up another in the 4th.

The weather is awesome here so I called it well as a good value night. Seat in 209 are great views - can see right field, which you can in 205.

As for that vote I would vote for that crap citifield just to burn the yankees for all the obvious mistakes/screwing of fans they did with this park.

Btw - the sound system is stil waaaaaay too loud here. Yankee stadium looms sadly across the street. Still, its a beautiful night in nyc. Some should make "legendas seats suck" shirts - those people suck.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yea Will, it's way too loud in that place.

  45. Nice hit Damon, hook action to get that one.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Interesting, Pauly thinks Padilla did that on purpose.

    What do you guys think?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Totally on Purpose by Padilla.

Great hard slide from TEX! Love seeing that.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Padilla is a ass-clown.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love Tex.

I love his intensity and the way he plays the game. I love it. It's players like him that create winning teams.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Michael Kay: "Keep your eyes out for payback."

    With a 2 run lead, I don't think so..not smart baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That's why they have to make it a five run lead.

    ReplyDelete
  52. They did you one better, a 6 run lead.

    ReplyDelete
  53. If they hit someone, dont hit kinsler.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Veras should do it. It doesn't matter if he gets tossed or suspended, plus, he'll gain respect in the clubhouse. I can't imagine they think too highly of him now.

    ReplyDelete
  55. They should hit Davis, a first baseman for a first baseman.

    ReplyDelete
  56. They should hit someone. But why not kinsler?

    ReplyDelete
  57. hahahaha that works... Good job A.J.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm calling a Teixeira homer right now.

    ReplyDelete
  59. ... If not his next at-bat, at some point this game.

    ReplyDelete
  60. ... okay next AB.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Cuz Kinsler has speed, u hit him, he might make it to second.

    ReplyDelete
  62. OMG Posada really is a total joke to this team!!

    ;)

  64. Damnit Posada. This is gonna hurt the Rangers' feelings a lot and now they're gonna beat us the next two games on hurt pride alone... I can't believe you've survived in this organization this long. Punk.

    ReplyDelete
  65. great way to open the 7 game homestand.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Our run differntial is improving by the inning.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Jorge Juiced One!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Some Mets fan actually said to me the other day that the Yankees weren't as good as we think because their run differential was very low.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yeah, but that includes those horrific Wang performances, so it's skewed a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  70. YANKEEES WIN ....THAAAAAAAaAaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YANKEEEEEESSSS WIIIIIIINNNNNNN!!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. The Anonymous guy (the one who bashes Joe "Retardi" and Jorge Posada) is a complete jerk. Every game he insults the players and the manager (Even Posada) because of one mistake and claims the season is over. I get sick of reading this troll's comments. Was Tino a complete dimwit for not scoring from second on a double?

    ReplyDelete
  72. A-ha!

Tex just said that he hit a homer against Padilla in his first two at-bats against him. Then he was hit in his third at-bat.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Just heard that too. Doesn't seem like Tex likes Padilla too much.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Padilla has been doing this for years. I remember a couple years ago he threw at someone who hit a homer against him the inning before and missed....so he threw it right at him again on the next pitch.

    The guy's a total punk.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Jorge is a great all time yankee. But it was tough to watch him try to throw out those runners. The rangers were really testing him. Also Jorge made a huge baserunning mistake. Its funny how the game turned out in the beginning it was looking like a tough game for Burnett and Posada but that certainly changed.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Nice game from Gardy he now has higher OBP than Jacoby Ellsbury. He always seems to be scoring runs. He is a perfect 9 hole hitter. Also the outfield defense with Gardner and Melky is very good.
