Not much analysis needed for a win like this so I'll make it short.
CC Sabathia was great. He dominated the Twins for seven innings, allowing just a run on three hits, he walked one, struck out three, and threw 68 of his 100 pitches for strikes. The run came on his only mistake, a solo homer off the bat of Michael Cuddyer. It was CC's eighth win of the season.
It was a very good night for the Yankees offense as they pounded out 10 runs on 16 hits. Every Yankee starter picked up at least one hit on the night. Mark Teixeira had a nice night picking up four singles and driving in a run. The bottom of the order did a great job tonight as well. Robinson Cano, Brett Gardner and Francisco Cervelli combined to go 7-for-14 with two doubles, a triple, 6 RBI (2 each), and 5 runs scored. Cano even got a hit with runners in scoring position, breaking an 0-for-22 skid.
Alex Rodriguez was robbed of a grand slam homer by Carlos Gomez in the fourth. The ball was clearly a homer had it not been for Gomez's great leaping catch.
Brett Tomko pitched two innings in relief to finish off the game. He allowed a run on one hit and a walk.
Boston won so the Yankees didn't gain any ground. A.J. Burnett takes the mound for the Yankees in game two tomorrow night in Minnesota. Left-hander Glenn Perkins will start for the Twins.

I hope they don't get rid of Cervelli when Molina is healthy and ready to go. He and Pena (a mistake to send down) brought so much young energy to the team. Also on Roy Halladay, Cashman should monitor the situation but I would not want to send 4 or 5 of my best young players to a division rival. Would rather send your young trade pieces to Florida or San Francisco where he might be able to pry away Josh Johnson -blow Florida away with an offer -or SF Giants for Cain or Lincecum. These are younger pitchers, with stuff very similar to Halladay's.
ReplyDeleteI wish they weren't going to get rid of him either, but they are going to send him down once Molina comes back in the next day or two.
ReplyDeleteThe Giants are leading the Wild Card race so they won't give up either of those pitchers. As for Johnson, the Marlins are also in the playoff picture, plus I think they control Johnson for a couple more years.
I hate seeing Cervelli go too.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if anyone needs a catcher? Molina is a very servicable catcher and may be good as trade bait.
As for Pena, I was actually going to say that I like what the Yankees are doing with him.
When I heard that the Yanks were going to send him down and get him some outfield experience to make him an even a better option was a great idea in my opinion.
Except I just looked and he hasn't played the outfield once.
WTF???
Now I'm pissed off about it. This guy should either be playing outfield every day in the minors or he should be back on the Yanks. He's better than Ransoms.
I just don't get what they are thinking sometimes.
I have to concur that sending Cervelli down appears to be a bad move. It's no easy task for a youngster to make an impression in New York, particularly a catcher, yet Cervelli has been a shining light. His raw energy, enthusiasm and no small measure of ability, have been uplifting for Yankees fans. I've nothing against Molina but (a) he represents the past rather than the future and (b) he can't hit. I'm not saying Cervelli is a great hitter but he does seem to have a much better idea of how to lay bat on ball than Molina. I really think he has earned a longer stay at this level.
