Melancon Headed Back to the Bronx

Well, Los Angeles actually... According to Chad Jennings, Mark Melancon has been called up to the Yankees, and will join the team in Los Angeles when for their three-game set with the Angels. There is no word on any corresponding moves. Maybe David Robertson goes back down?

Melancon has struggled a bit this month down in Scranton where he posted a 4.11 ERA in 10 games. Overall he's 4-0 with 3 saves and a 2.50 ERA in 25 Triple-A games.

What do you guys think of the move? Me? I like it, I thought they rushed him out of here too quickly the first time around.

  1. With Melancon being called up it would make sense to send down Aceves because he cant pitch until after the allstar break. Then you call Aceves back up and get rid of Tomko.

I hope Robertson doesn't get sent down. For the most part he has pitched well and is a much better pitcher than Brett Tomko.

  2. ^^ I wrote that assuming that Aceves does get another start against Baltimore after the break.

Get rid of Tomko Girardi is scared to use him unless it is a blowout. Robertson has a 2.53 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 21 innings.

  3. Good point with Aceves, as long as he has options I see no problem with send him down until the break.

  4. I think Aceves deserves another start. I mean the guy had a 65 pitch count and was pitching on 3 days rest how deep did the yankees expect him to go. I think he will have a 80-90 pitch count his next start and with that he will pitch atleast 6 innings.

  5. Aceves is a much more valuable weapon out of the bullpen.

  6. That is true Greg but who will you use as your 5th starter?

  7. I'd give Mitre a shot after the break and go from there. A lot depends on whether Wang can return by early August or not. But for now they should see what he can give them.

  8. I also thought they rushed Melancon the first time. I dont understand calling Melancon up right now when the bullpen has done a fine job lately.

The bullpen is not that worn out. You have 3 games before the allstar break. Bruney did not pitch in Minnesota you have Tomko ready to eat up innings (if your scared to use Tomko he should not be on the team) and Coke did not throw many pitches against Minnesota. I dont understand why you would call up Melancon right now you have enough to get by on Friday. It looks like another yankee panic move like they did by putting Wang in the bullpen.

I dont understand sending down Robertson or Albaledjo for Melancon that move makes no sense. Unless Melancon is here to stay then you DFA Tomko. Seems odd that they are rushing a very valuable prospect in Melancon.

  9. Hmmm...maybe showing him off on the big stage to see if there is any interest in him before the trade deadline?

  11. After the game yesterday they were asking Joe if he needed another pitcher because six relief (counting Aceves) pitchers were used yesterday. He said he didn't know and they'd talk about but they obviously felt with Joba pitching today they needed to have someone fresh and ready. Joba doesn't have a history of going long into games this year so I'm sure they felt if he pulls one of his 95-pitches in 3 1.3 inning starts today they might have been in trouble.
Will be interesting to see who they sent down though.

  12. Warning... Don't click on the link in Chinese above.

    Hey Greg,

I was curious if that post above was spam or just a joke. I had no intentions of clicking on the link so I decided to use google's translator to see what that message above was.

It is in Chinese and the translation was all porn related, so it is likely a link to porn or worse.

Just thought I would give everyone the heads up.

  13. I like giving Melancon another taste of the big leagues. I think he got nervous the first time after making a great first impression, because he became wild, which is so uncharacteristic of him. Keep in mind, he was thrown into a couple of real pressure-cooker games when he was up. Since he went back to SWB after his shot, he's been very good, though not as spectacular as he was before. Melancon is our future big-time reliever.

My guess is either Albaldejo or Robertson goes down, unless the Yankees want to stretch out Aceves or Hughes in AAA, but you know what, they could do that in NY too. Frankly, I would rather the Yankees didn't tinker with the success those guys have had in the bullpen this season. After all, the ultimate goal is to WIN. They can stretch Hughes out next spring.

    I completely agree.
