Yanks love Montero, but is Romine the jewel of the system?

We all know about Jesus Montero and his great bat. We all know how much the Yankees love this kid and see him as a major part of their future. But in this recent article from Baseball America (membership required) it seems that the Yankees may have placed Austin Romine higher on the organizational totem poll.

According to the article, back in early July team officials told other teams teams that only he and Triple-A outfielder Austin Jackson were untouchable.

The article also had several quotes from VP of player development Mark Newman, who said Romine was "exceeding everyone's expectations in all areas." He also had some very nice things to say about his bat and glove work.

This year in Tampa, Romine is hitting .284/.317/.469 with 11 homers and 52 RBI.

So what do you think, who do you look at as the better prospect?

  1. I don't care how bad his defense is, Montero has the bat to be a very very special player.

  2. If one of them gets traded they won't be headed to the Blue Jays because Halladay has just been traded to the Phillies.

  4. I like Montero better.

So much for the Yankees getting Halladay.

  5. That's why I've been saying I'd be willing to give up Montero and Joba + 1 more mid level prospect

    Do it, do it!

(oh, and let's all grow a set and stop posting "anonymously"....ok?

Where did you hear that? There are no reports of that at all that I have seen.

Are you sure you didn't see that Holliday (Matt) got traded from the A's to the Cardinals?

  8. I don't see that either Anon. Where did you see that?

  9. Matt Holliday just got traded.

No reports of Halladay being traded on ESPN, WFAN or MLB.

  10. Anon Halladay did not get traded. The Phillies made a offer though.

  11. I have to assume that anon either heard a rumor or heard incorrectly and thought it was Roy Halladay that got traded instead of Matt Holliday.

  12. Wow, that's shocking with Montero in BA's top five prospects in all of baseball.

  13. My bad. Halladay got traded.

  14. There is nothing anywhere about that Halladay rumor.

  15. haven't seen these guys play but montero is probably the best, he is a big dude. 1 of these prospects will have to go unfortunately if the yanks think they need more pitching help & a good pitcher. i still think they can get a decent pitcher without including hughes or joba.

  16. Anyone think this could just be created hype to drum up more interest in Romine?

I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if the Yanks were intentionally trying to make people think he is better than he is to take some interest away from Montero.

    Just a thought.

  17. yeah absolutely, hype is part of the game. i think we hyped up some players in the past like a halsey or eric milton, dioner navarro was really hyped i recall

  18. The only way you deal Montero is if you land

    Josh Johnson+Cameron Maybin
    Matt Cain+Jonathan Sanchez
    Felix Hernandez
    Edison Volquez+Aaron Harang
    Zach Duke+Ian Snell+John Grabow+PTBNL

  19. it would be great to land josh johnson. what a future he has.

  20. Romine will be the future catcher. Montero will be the future dh.

  21. I saw Romine twice, once verus Mets in Port Saint Lucie, Fla. and versus Marlins Jupiter, Fla. He didn't impressed me.

  22. This must be to hype those guys up. Romine and T-Jax will be good players with no great tools, and Montero has an MLB ready bat, I belive even as a DH he'll be a better player than those two.

  23. The article is written by George King. He couldn't know less about the Yanks, so I wouldn't bother worrying about anything he says.

  24. The guy I like best is Austsus Romtero.

    Can't we have both?

  25. romine is a very good young player. one of the main reasons montero got called up (besides his great bat in tampa) is that they wanted romine to get the playing time he deserved. i believe he hit homers in the first 2 or 3 games after montero got called up. he's a much better catching prospect, while i think that montero may be the yankees future DH with spot starts at first and catcher
