Savoring the Moment

With the inflated expecatations and the inevitability of the Yankees clinching of the AL East title, its obvious to turn to what comes next. However, its been a regular season that I'm going to remember for a long time regardless of what this team does in October. So lets stop for a minute and appreciate what we saw.

Obviously, the highlights stick out in my mind. The emergence of Hughes in the bullpen, A-Rod hitting a home run on his first at bat back, Pettitte's almost perfect game, Gardner's inside the park home run, Melky hitting for the cycle, the three straight walk wins, Nick Swisher's amazing April, Sabathia's dominance since the All Star Break, the four game set to bury the Sox, clinching against the Sox, seeing the new ballpark for the first time, and everything else that I'm probably forgetting. Its tough to pick a favorite but give it a shot in the comments section.

Their's also the times when it looked like the season would go down the drain. Teixeira's complete ineptitude at the plate in April, the entire team's slow start, Boston's eight straight wins to start off the year, Wang's horrid performance, Joba's inconsistency, Boston's trade for Victor Martinez, the park's early homer happy tendency and empty seats, A-Rod's steroid revelation, Joe Torre's trashing of the team, and A-Rod's injury in March.

All in all though, its been a great season and I've enjoyed writing here for the past few months. Its been great and hopefully we'll see our team baptize the new Stadium with a championship banner this October. For now though, just enjoy the moment.

  1. This season definitely has been a memorable one and could go down as one of the greatest seasons ever if this teams wins it all. Now that the East is in the bag, the playoffs can't get here soon enough. Let's Go Yanks.

  2. Along with the Yankees, I've seen this blog grow to its potential, with key additions(new forums, chats, regulars and even new writers) that provided key memories that coincided with our teams amazing season. Congrats Greg, the place looks great.

  3. Derek Jeter breaking Gehrig's record at home is by far the best memory of the season till now.

  4. Yeah. Like Emmanuel said, this could go down as one of the best seasons ever. It all depends on how we do in the postseason. And I have a feeling we'll do great!

It's been an amazing season, but like Greg has said numerous times, the real season starts next week.

Just got my AL East shirt and cap from Modell's. Gonna wear it proudly tomorrow.

    GO YANKEES

  5. Thanks Derek.

Mike, I couldn't agree more. With the season as long as it is there are so many ups and downs, and to come out on top after 162 is great to watch.

Sometimes Yankees fans don't enjoy these types of accomplishments as much as they should since it's win the world series or the season is a "failure". Maybe missing out on the playoffs last year will make some fans appreciate this one even more.

  7. Oh I appreciate it alot Greg. More than '07, '06, and '05. I'm so excited for this team. I ran over to Modell's after the final out and got the lockeroom cap and tee, like I said I would.

Were you at the game? It must have been cool.

  10. I will savor a lot from the regular season. Being at the Stadium for the first exhibition game and Opening Day and a few walk off wins. Even taking my 2 year old to the Stadium for the first time.

But in terms of the game itself, I think the fact that the Yanks lost the first 8 to the red sox and came back and won 9 of the last 10 against the sox takes the cake for me.

The sox fans were talking shit at the beginning of the year and one sox fan I know even laughed and asked me before the ninth meeting if the Yanks were ever going to win one.

Win one? Actually for the rest of the year, the Yanks only lost one more game to the sox and the season series ended up tied as the Yanks won the division going away.

He's laughing now. He even congratulated me.

Now lets go finish the job and get 11 more wins!

  11. How 'bout Nick Swisher's scoreless eighth and closing his season with a 0.0 ERA.
