Yanks Already Eying Mauer?

From Charley Walters:
Mauer, 26, can become a free agent after the 2010 season. When contract talks get serious after this season, the Twins are expected to try to sign Mauer for about $120 million over seven years.

The New York Yankees, however, with catcher Jorge Posada at 38 years old, are expected to offer more money and possibly more years.
I look at the idea of Joe Mauer the same way I did with CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira, it's a no brainer. He's the best catcher in the game and in after next year the Yankees will likely need a long term catcher. Sure, their minor league system is stock with talent catchers like Jesus Montero, Austin Romine, and Kyle Higashioka, but none of them are Joe Mauer. He's the best catcher in the game and would be loved in New York. If the Twins are dumb enough to let him walk away the Yankees better be smart enough to swoop him up.

  1. It would be nice to have a guy like him in our lineup. And if we do get him next year, that would mean that all the other catching prospects that you said could be traded for a great pitcher or something. But like you said Greg earlier in January, you can never have too much talent.

  2. Still this could be our lineup for opening day in 2011.

    Jeter SS
    Mauer C
    A-Rod 3B
    Tex 1B
    Holliday LF
    Cano 2B
Posada DH (Hope so if doesn't retire)
    Melky/Gardner/Jackson CF
    Melky/Gardner/Jackson RF

I can't see the Yankees resigning Swisher. Still that would be lineup.

  3. Or if Posada retires Jeter and A-ros can DH and Pena could get a shot at playing everyday.

  4. if twins let mauer walk, they would be committing suicide. With the opening of there new ballpark, but stranger things have happened

  5. and the fact he's a local boy, being from st. paul, MN, he'd have to change his number # he wears #7...

  6. i say let him walk as well. right now the cervelli/posada tandem looks solid for next season, i'm completely fine with that. soon enough jesus will be up and kicking joe mauer's old ass around. save the dough for carl crawford and halladay in 2011

  7. Mauer will remain a Twin, they'll open the purses for him, he's right up there with Kirby as far as Twin fans go. He's had some injuries as well that might be a problem for a catcher (back and knee) long term. And I don't think the Yanks will have an opening at first base for a while.

There aren't many opposing players that I enjoy watching -- Mauer is one of them.

  8. If thats what the twins are gunna give him then hes gunna want 10 years 180-200million from the Yanks. NO WAY!

The Yankees got who they needed last offseason and have reserves in the minors when we need them.

Cervelli and Jackson will be viable options, and lets not forget all the pitching down there.

  9. Logan, answer your damn cellular device.

As much as I love Mauer, I agree no Navy Blue for him.

The contract he would command would be so ridiculous; if thats really what the Twins are offering. Hes probably going to want another 3-4 years and an additional 50M from any team other then the twins.

I comfortable with Jorge...for now and Cisco in the future.

  10. Upon further thinking, the Yankees only get involved with Mauer if he looks like he might land in the East.

  11. I doubt Posada will retire until his contract is up. I'm fine with him for now anyway. I can see maybe getting Mauer and not signing Matsui, Molina and using Mauer as a DH and catching. Or if Boston wants him I can see the Yankees pulling another A-Rod Tex kind of deal scooping him in. I would like him in the lineup though.

  12. God no. Please enough is enough. We have catchers of our own we can use. Let some of the other teams have good players.

  13. A lot can happen between now & then. Catchers are a different animal than other position players, but still-- if he's available, you gotta try to sign him.

We'll need to deal with Jeter too, don't forget.

Let's concentrate on 2009 for now. This is shaping up as 'a pretty good year'.

  14. enough is enough and its time for a change.

  15. I hope they don't do this. The "not the Twins" premium that the Yankees would have to pay would be too much money and too many years to commit to a catcher, I don't care how good the guy is. The injury risk is too great.

As it is the Yanks are on pace to win 103-105 games this season, if they get a little more stability in the pitching rotation (which has been mediocre at times this year), they could easily win 110-120 games next season.

As long as he doesn't wind up with the Red Sox I think the Yankees should pass.

  16. get him sox! no yankee fans want him.

  17. I think the only way the Yanks would get Mauer is if the Red Sox are interested.

Like Teixeira, not only would we get Mauer, but the Red Sox wouldn't.

Because remeber, Varitek could retire after this year, so the Red Sox would be interested in Mauer as well.

I'd love the Yankees to get Mauer, but the only way I see that happening is if the Red Sox offer him something, and the Yanks blow away the offer like they did with Teix.

  19. Nobody is saying we don't want Mauer! We want him a lot, it's just that it doesn't seem that likely the Yanks will get him. But who knows.

  26. I love Sox fans that think we actually care what they say. Spend their time on a Yankee blog instead their craptastic SoSH board.

    ReplyDelete
  27. yeah, where is that game thread? Greg might be having technical problems again.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'll use my real name.

    Fuck the Yanks.

    ReplyDelete
  29. But seriosuly Anon, what's your problem? Wouldn't you like to talk with your Red Sox buddies on a Red Sox site, then having Yankee fans bust your chops?

I mean come on, it's common sense.

  30. oh wow, I'm so upset b/c you said that[sarcasm]

  31. YB just ignore the cock sucker. His posts are non-intelligent and don't contribute to the site, therefore they don't warrant a response.

  39. game thread/chat? where it be???

    ReplyDelete
  40. It's up... First pitch at 2:05 p.m.

    ReplyDelete
  41. At this point in time, who's to say it's not likely? I seem to remember it wasn't likely that CC would sign here, or Tex, and we know what happened there.

The thing is if Minnesota offers 7 years $120 the Yankees maybe offer him $180 for the same amount of time. Is he really going to give up $60 MM and the chance to win a ring? I don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  42. If the Yankees have Montero, why would they bother with Mauer?

And it seems to me Boston will be more in need of a catcher than we will.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Many don't think he will be able to catch in the majors.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Signing Mauer would be embarrassing.

We don't need 5-6 $100,000,000 deals. Let's play with some dignity and develop our own players. Then winning would be more fun.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Embarrassing? For who? Me? No way.

Mike, I think you're reading too much nonsense written by folks like Mike Lupica. The Steinbrenner's job is to do EVERYTHING they can to make sure the Yankees win. The rules of the game say there is no salary cap, so the only people who should be embarrassed are teams that can't keep up.

    ReplyDelete
  46. There is no way Joe Mauer will be a Yankee. He probably will not want to leave his hometown. Also Twins will definitely not let him go, seeing as he is the main attraction (besides Justin Morneau) up there and they are just opening a new stadium. Plus, like you said we have plenty of potentially effective full time catchers. I am rooting for Jesus Montero. =)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm not sure Mauer will leave the Twins, but it would be nice to have him.

And you mention that little pissant Lupica, Greg. Yuk! Now he's taken to writing columns in the NYDN dealing with "social commetary." Ugh!

    Mike
