After a rocky first inning in which he allowed two runs on three hits and a walk, all with two out, Phil Hughes settled in and pitched pretty well in his final regular spring start. In 4.2 innings he allowed three runs on six hits and a walk, and struck out five. He threw 88 pitches on the day, 61 for strikes.
According to Hughes, his biggest problem today was a lack of command of his curveball. But he did not seem too concerned about it after the game:
"I didn’t command [the curve] all that well today, but I feel like the spin’s been fine on it. I kind of know I can find the feel for my breaking ball as the game goes on, so I really focused on other things. Cutter. Changeup. Fastball command. The curveball is kind of one of those things, it kind of comes and goes for me, but when it’s on it seems to snowball and will be on for a while. The biggest thing for me is being able to throw all four pitches for strikes.” (source: Chad Jennings)Besides the curve, he also threw a few too many pitches, but that's gonna happen when you can't command your best pitch. He now has two extended spring starts before making his season debut on April 15th in the Bronx against the Angels.
Besides David Robertson, who allowed a run on two hits including a homer in an inning of work, the rest of the Yankees pen held the Twins off the board. Boone Logan, Joba Chamberlain, Chan Ho Park, and Royce Ring combined to throw 3.1 hitless innings, the only base runner was a walk given up by Ring.
Not much to talk about offensively, with the Yankees scoring just two runs on six hits. Both runs came on solo homers, one for Alex Rodriguez in the 4th, and another off the bat of Juan Miranda in the 8th. Both homers were each player's second of the spring. Miranda actually accounted for half of the Yankees hits, going 3-for-3, with the homer and a double. Derek Jeter and Ramiro Pena picked up the other two Yankees hits today.
Tomorrow's Game
The Yanks travel to Dunedin tomorrow to take on the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow afternoon. A.J. Burnett will make his final start of the spring, with Brian Tallet going for Toronto. First pitch is set for 1:05 pm.
