October 3rd

1887 - Former Yankees INF Armando Marsans (1917-1918) was born.

1909 - Former Yankees P Johnny Broaca (1934-1937) was born (1909-1986). Johnny went 39-23 in 99 games for the Yankees. On November 19,1938, Johnny was purchased by the Cleveland Indians from the Yankees.

1926 - After the Yankees scored twice in the 2nd inning, St. Louis Cardinals P Glover Cleveland Alexander sets down the last 21 Yankee batters with 10 strikeouts in Game 2 of the 1926 World Series, resulting in a 6-2 win.

1947 - Yankee starter Floyd Beavens flirts with immorality when he pitchers no-hit baseball for 8 2/3 innings of a World Series game against the Brooklyn Dodgers. He loses the no-hitter and game when Dodgers pinch hitter Cookie Lavagetto doubles off the RF wall at Ebbets Field to score the tying and winning runs.

1951 - Former Yankees All Star OF/DH Dave Winfield (1981-1988) was born. On December 15, 1980, Dave signed as a MLB free agent with the Yankees. Dave hit .296 with 205 HRs and 818 RBI’s in 1,172 games as Yankee. He was named to the AL All Star team 1981-88. In his only World Series appearance in 1981 with the Yankees Dave only hit .045 in 6 games, prompting George to call him “Mr. May” for not responding with his bat for the Yankees. On May 11,1990, Dave was traded by the Yankees to the California Angels for veteran starter Mike Witt.

1956 - Brooklyn Dodgers veteran starter Sal Maglie defeated the New York Yankees by the score of 6-3 in the opening game of the 1956 World Series.

1957 - In Game 3 of the 1957 World Series, Lew Burdette wins the 1st of his 3 decisions against the Yankees. Burdette and the Milwaukee Braves beat Bobby Shantz by the score of 4-2.

1960 - The New York Yankees ended their 1960 AL season with a 8-7 win over the Boston Red Sox, finishing the 1960 AL season with a 15-game winning streak.

1965 - Whitey Ford becomes the winngest pitcher in New York Yankees team history, when he notches career win No. 232 against the Boston Red Sox by the score of 8-7 at Fenway Park. Whitey passes former Yankees starter Charles “Red “ Ruffing as the Yankees pitcher with the most career team wins.

1973 - Former Yankees minor league OF Kerry Robinson was born. The Yankees signed Kerry Robinson as a minor league free agent. He spent the 2000 season with the Columbus Clippers (AAA), never making a MLB appearance for the Yankees. He was released at the end of the season.

1986 - Former Yankees minor league 1B Vince DiMaggio passed away (1912-1986). Vince came up to MLB in 1937 with the Boston Bees (aka Braves). In February of 1939, Vince was traded to the New York Yankees, his brother Joe's team, but never played a game for the team. Most of 1939 season was spent in the minors, where he showed substantial power for the Kansas City Blues. He cranked out 46 HRs, the 2nd-highest total to that point by a right-handed hitter in the American Association, leading the AA by 13 over Phil Weintraub. As the top power threat on the most successful AA team ever (judging by total wins), Vince also led the league with 136 RBI, two more than Ab Wright. In August of 1939, Vince was traded by the Yankees to the Cincinnati Reds. Vince played in 8 games for them, hitting .071. The next year he appeared in 2 more games with the Reds before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he was to spend the bulk of his MLB career.

October 4th

1884 - Former Yankees P Harry Ables (1911) was born. Harry went 0-1 in 3 games for the Yankees in 1911.

1887- Former Yankees P Ray Fisher (1910-1917) was born. Ray went 76-68 in 219 games for the Yankees before being sent to the Cincinnati Reds. His best Yankees season was in 1915, when he went 18-11.

1910 - Former Yankees INF (1932-1948) and MLB Coach (1949-1970) Frank “Crow” Crosetti was born (1910-2002). On August 23, 1929, Frank was traded by the San Francisco Seals (PCL) to the Yankees for a player to be named later and 3 players. The Yankees sent Julie Wera (1931) to the San Francisco (PCL) to complete the trade. He was a regular for 13 years and part-timer for 4 seasons. Frank hit more than 20 doubles 7 times and scored more than 70 runs in 7 seasons. He was an AL All Star team member in 1936-37. Frank finished with 260 doubles, 65 triples and 649 RBI’s in 1,682 games. He was the Yankees MLB 3B coach from 1947-1967.

1922 - For the first time, the entire World Series will be broadcast over the radio Sportswriter Garland Rice does the announcing of the Giants and Yankees for radio station WJZ in Newark, NJ, whose signal is relayed to WGY in Schenectady, NY.

1928 - Game 1 of the 1928 World Series between the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals is a swift execution before 61,425 fans at Yankee Stadium. Babe Ruth has a single and double, and scored 2 runs, once on Bob Meusel's 4th-inning HR, and Lou Gehrig is 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s off of Bill Sherdel. Starter Waite Hoyt sets the Cardinals down with 3-hits, one a solo HR by Jim Bottomley in the 7th inning for a 4-1 victory.

1939 - The 1939 World Series begins at Yankee Stadium, with the Cincinnati Reds playing their 1st Series since the infamous 1919 match-up against the Chicago White Sox. With the Yankees as heavy favorites, the game is tied 1-1 until the last of the 9th inning, when Yankees C Bill Dickey singles home the winning run.

1947 - New York Yankees starter Spec Shea throws a 4-hitter and helps his own cause hitting 2 singles, as the Yankees win by a score of 2-1 over the Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series. A HR by Joe DiMaggio in the 5th inning is the winning margin.

1950 - Philadelphia Phillies Relief ace Jim Konstanty starts and loses Game 1 of the 1950 World Series to Vic Raschi and the Yankees by the score of 1-0. Bobby Brown hit a double and scored the lone run on 2 long flies.

1951 - In the opening game of the 1951 World Series, Monte Irvin stole home in the 1st inning and collected 4 hits. The New York Giants defeated New York Yankees starter Allie Reynolds by the score of 5-1 with Dave Koslo pitching a complete game at Yankee Stadium. Irvin, Hank Thompson and Willie Mays of the Giants became the 1st all-black MLB outfield in a World Series game.

1953 - Mickey Mantle’s 3rd inning Grand Slam HR off of Brooklyn Dodgers Ace Johnny Podres leads the Yankees to an 11-7 win and a 3 games to 2 games lead in the 1953 World Series. Also Yankees hitters Gene Woodling, Gil McDougald and Billy Martin hit HRs in the game

1955 - “Next Year” finally comes to Brooklyn, as the Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees by the score of 2-0 to win the 1955 World Series behind the pitching of Johnny Podres. Yankees starter Tommy Byrne takes the loss.

1958 - In Game 3 of the 1958 World Series, Yankees starter Don Larsen and closer Ryne Duren combine for a shutout as the Bronx Bombers win the game by the score of 4-0 over the Milwaukee Braves. Yankees slugger Hank Bauer accounts for all Yankee 4 runs, including a 2-run HR in the 7th inning.

1960 - Former Yankees P Jack Warhop (1908-1915) passed away (1884-1960). Jack pitched for some poor Yankee teams posting a 69-93 record with a 3.12 ERA in 221 games. His best Yankees season was in 1910, posting a 14-14 record in 37 games with a 2.64 ERA.

1961 - Whitey Ford's 3rd straight World Series shutout along with HRs by Elston Howard and Bill Skowron, gives the Yankees a 2-0 win in Game 1 against the Cincinnati Reds at Yankee Stadium.

1962 - In the opener of the 1962 World Series at Candlestick Park, Whitey Ford's record scoreless inning streak ends at 33 2/3innings, when a surprising squeeze play by Jose Pagan brings Willie Mays home. The Yankees beat the Giants by the score of 6–2, the last win of a record 10 World Series victories for Whitey Ford.

1972 - Yankees' pitcher Larry Gowell hits a double in his only MLB at-bat. This is the last hit by an AL pitcher before the league adopts the DH rule for 1973 AL season. The Yankees lose to the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 1-0.

1978 - The Kansas City Royals notch 16 hits off of 3 Yankees pitchers to even the 1978 ALCS with a 10-4 triumph. A 2-run HR by Royals shortstop Freddie Patek seals the victory.

1980 - The Yankees clinch their 4th AL East title in 5 seasons, beating the Detroit Tigers by the score of 5-2 in the 1st game of a doubleheader. Reggie Jackson hits his 41st HR of the 1980 AL season. Reggie will share the AL HR crown with Ben Oglivie of the Milwaukee Brewers.

1995 - The Yankees Jim Leyritz hits a 2-run HR in the 15th inning to give the Yankees a dramatic victory and a 2-games-to-none AL Division Series lead over the Seattle Mariners.

1996 - The Yankees score twice in the 9th inning to defeat the Texas Rangers by the score of 2-1, despite Juan Gonzalez's 4th HR of their ALDS. The Yankees take a 2-games-to-1 lead in the ALD series.

1997 - The Yankees go a game up on Cleveland Indians with a 6-1 victory behind a 5-hitter by starter David Wells. Yankees Paul O'Neill hits a 4th-inning grand slam HR, driving in 4 of the 5 Yankees runs.

1998 - Former Yankees P Lee Grissom (1940) passed away (1907-1998). On January 4, 1940, Lee was traded by the Cincinnati Reds to the Yankees for Joe Beggs. Lee posted a 0-0 mark in 5 games for the Yankees before being selected off waivers on May 15, 1940 by the Brooklyn Dodgers from the Yankees.

2000 - The Yankees even their ALDS with the Oakland A’s at one game apiece with a 4-0 victory. Yankees starter Andy Pettitte holds the A’s scoreless for 7 2/3 innings for the victory.

2002 - The Yankees blow a 6-1 lead as the Anaheim Angels bounce back for a 9-6 victory and 2 games to 2 lead in their ALDS. Tim Salmon and Adam Kennedy hit HRs for Anaheim while rookie Francisco Rodriguez again gets the victory in relief.

2005 - Yankees starter Mike Mussina pitched scoreless ball into the 6th inning, and rookie 2B Robinson Cano lined a 3-run double in the 1st inning as the Yankees defeated Bartolo Colón and the Anaheim Angels by the score of 4-2 in Game 1 of their AL Division Series.

2007 - Former Yankees P Don Nottebart (1969) was passed away (1936-2007). On October 21, 1968, Don was purchased by the Yankees from the Cincinnati Reds. Don only appeared in 4 games for the Yankees with no record before being returned to the Reds on April 26, 1969.

2009 - The Yankees All Star 3rd baseman Alex Rodriguez sets an AL record with 7 RBI in the 6th inning of the Yankees' 10-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, with homers off Wade Davis and Andy Sonnanstine - the second a grand slam. The Yankees complete the 2009 AL season with 243 home runs, a franchise record.

October 5th

1895 - Former Yankees OF/3B Norman “Bub” McMillian (1922) was born. Norman hit .256 in 33 games in 1922 for the Yankees.

1908 - Boston Red Sox pitcher King Brady makes his only American League appearance a good one, shutting out the New York Highlanders by the score of 4-0.

1912 - The Yankees win their final game at Hill Top Park, by the score of 8-6, when Hal Chase hits a 3-run HR to defeat the Washington Senators. Next year the team will play at the Polo Grounds. Homer Thompson, in his only MLB appearance, is the catcher for New York while pitching is his brother Tommy, becoming the 1st brother battery in AL history.

1921 - The New York Yankees play their 1st World Series game ever beating the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds as Yankees starter Carl Mays only needs 86 pitches to set the Giants down on 5 hits, 4 of them by Frankie Frisch, as Babe Ruth drives in the 1st run of the Series in the opening inning of the 3-0 Yankees win.

1922 - The New York Yankees and Giants play to a 3-3 tie in 1922 World Series, in a game called account of darkness by the umpires.

1926 - In Game #3 of the World Series, Jesse Haines pitches a 5-hit shutout as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Yankees by the score of 4-0, to take a 2-1 lead in the Series.

1928 - In the World Series, Lou Gehrig of the Yankees unloads a 3-run HR in the 1st inning of Game #2. Grover Cleveland Alexander, the hero of the 1926 Series between the Yankees and the Cardinals, is driven from the game in the 3rd inning as New York cruises, to a 9-3 victory, to take a 2-1 Series lead.

1939 - Yankees hurler Monte Pearson 2-hits the Cincinnati Reds in a 4-0 shutout in the 1939 World Series. Yankees 1B Babe Dahlgren hits a HR for the Yankees. Lou Gehrig in uniform sits on the Yankee bench to watch his last World Series. He would never wear the pinstripes again on the playing field after the World Series ends on October 8,1939.

1941 - Brooklyn Dodgers backstop Mickey Owens earns eternal goat’s horns by dropping 3rd strike to Yankees OF Tommy Henrich in 9th inning thereby opens the floodgates for a Yankee win with 4 unearned runs being scored in the 9th inning.

1942 - Whitey Kurowski hits a 2-run HR in the 9th inning of Game #5, giving the St. Louis Cardinals, a 4-2 victory to capture the 1942 World Series over the New York Yankees.

1941 - Former Yankees 1B/OF Andy Kosco (1968) was born. On November 28,1967, Andy was drafted by the Yankees from the A’s in the 1967 MLB Rule 5 player draft. The Yankees expecting him to be a power-hitter, but Andy only hit .248 with 15 HRs and 59 RBIs for the Yankees in 1968. On December 4,1968, Andy was traded by the Yankees to the Dodgers for P Mike Kekich.

1947 - Brooklyn Dodgers LF Al Gionfriddo makes a spectacular catch and robs Joe DiMaggio of a game-tying home run in Game #6 of the World Series. The Dodgers beat the Yankees by a score of 8-6.

1949 - The Yankees edge the Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 1-0 on Tommy Henrich’s lead off HR off of Dodgers starter Don Newcombe in the bottom of the 9th inning. Yankees starter Allie Reynolds throws a 2-hit shutout.

1952 - In Game #5 of the 1952 World Series, Brooklyn Dodgers win a 6-5 victory in 11 innings over the Yankees, when Billy Cox scores the winning run behind a RBI-double hit by Duke Snider. Carl Erskine pitched a complete game to give the Dodgers, a 3-2 Series lead heading back to Ebbets Field.

1953 - Yankees 2B Billy Martin makes a record 12th hit in the 1953 World Series as the Yankees win their 5th consecutive World Championship under Yankees Manager Casey Stengel (1949-1953) with a 4-3 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Yankees starter Whitey Ford goes 8 innings, with Allie Reynolds picking up his last World Series victory in relief. Clem Labine takes the loss for the Dodgers.

1956 - Yogi Berra becomes the 4th Yankee player to hit a Grand Slam HR in the World Series, but the Yankees still lose the game by dropping a 6-0 lead to the Brooklyn Dodgers, who rally to win the game by a score of 13-8.

1960 - In a portent of things to come, Bill Mazeroski's 2-run 5th-inning HR off of reliever Jim Coates is the difference as the Pittsburgh Pirates beats the New York Yankees by the score of 6-4, for its 1st World Series win since 1925.

1972 - Former Yankees reserve OF Aaron Guiel (2006) was born. On July 5,2006, Aaron Guiel was selected off waivers by the New York Yankees from the Kansas City Royals. He appeared in 44 games for the Yankees, hitting .256. On December 12,2006, Aaron was granted MLB free agency by the Yankees.

1977 - The Kansas City Royals shell New York Yankees starter Don Gullet for 3 HRs and win by a score of 7-2 in the opening game of the 1977 AL Playoffs.

1985 - The Toronto Blue Jays win the American League East championship with a 5-1 win over the New York Yankees at Exhibition Stadium. Blue Jay starter Doyle Alexander pitches a complete game, allowing only 5 hits.

1996 - Yankees CF Bernie Williams homered from each side of the plate and Cecil Fielder breaks a tie with a 7th-inning single as the Yankees beat the Texas Rangers by a score of 6-4 to win the AL Division Series, 3-1, and advance to the ALCS.

1999 -The Yankees whitewash the Texas Rangers by a score of 8-0, in Game #1 of their ALDS. Starter Orlando Hernandez pitches a 2-hitter for the Yankees, while Bernie Williams hits a single, double and HR and collects 6 RBI’s in the game.

2002 - The Angels shock the Yankees by scoring 8 runs in the 5th inning and going on to a 9-5 victory. This victory gives Anaheim its 1st postseason series victory ever, as they win their ALDS match-up, 3 games to 1. Shawn Wooten hit a HR for the Angels, while Jorge Posada adds a round-tripper for the Yankees. Jarrod Washburn gets the victory for the Angels.

2007 - The Cleveland Indians can thank a bug infestation at Jacobs Field for helping them defeat the Yankees by the score of 2-1 in 11 innings and take a 2-0 lead in the ALDS. The bugs are at their worst in the 8th inning, when a flustered Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain gives up the tying run on a wild pitch.

October 6th

1885 - Former Yankees INF John “Schoolboy” Knight (1909-11, 1913) was born. On August 20, 1908, John was purchased by the Highlanders from the Baltimore Orioles (IL). His best Yankees season was in 1910, when John hit .312. On February 17,1912, John was traded by the Highlanders along with a player to be named later to the Washington Senators for Gabby Street. The Highlanders sent Rip Williams on February 22,1912 to the Senators to complete the trade.

1908 - The Yankees lose their 100th game of the year by the score of 11-3 at Fenway Park. When the 1908 AL season ended, the Yankees showed a 51-103 record, some 38 1/2 games behind the 1st place- Detroit Tigers.

1914 - Former Yankees P George Washburn (1941) was born. George went 0-1 in 1-game for the Yankees in 1941.

1926 - Yankees slugger Babe Ruth hits 3-HRs leads the Yankees to a 10-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 4 of the 1926 World Series. Yankees starter Waite Hoyt picks up the win with a complete game.

1938 - The famous heart breaking performance by veteran hurler Dizzy Dean during the World Series with Chicago Cubs against the New York Yankees. The sore armed pitcher, no longer the flame-thrower of his youth, used a mixture of curves and off-speed pitches to carry a 2-1 Cubs lead into 7th inning, only to watch it disappear on tough luck. As the Yankees score 3 runs to win the game by the score of 6-3. Frank Crosetti and Joe DiMaggio, each hit HRs for the Yankees.

1939 - Former Yankees P Jack Cullen (1962, 1965-1966) was born. Jack went 4-4 in 19 games for the Yankees before he was traded along with OF/1B John Miller to the Dodgers for INF John Kennedy in 1966.

1947 - Former Yankees P Steve Kline (1970-1974) was born. The New York Yankees in the 7th round of the 1966 MLB amateur player draft drafted Steve Kline. Steve went 40-37 in 97 games for the Yankees, with 1972 being his best Yankees season posting a 16-9 mark. On April 26,1974, Steve was traded by the Yankees along with hurlers Fred Beene, Tom Buskey, and Fritz Peterson to the Cleveland Indians for 1B Chris Chambliss, hurlers Richard Tidrow, and Cecil Upshaw.

1949 - Former Yankees OF Guy Zinn (1911-1912) passed away. Guy Zinn appeared in 115 games for the Yankees, hitting .255, In December of 1912; Guy was sold to the Boston Braves.

1960 - New York Yankees slugger Mickey Mantle hits 2 HRs in the 2nd game of the 1960 World Series to lead the Yankees to a 16-3 win at Pittsburgh. It was the 2nd time Mickey Mantle paired up HRs in a World Series game. Mickey has a total of 5 RBIs in the game. Yankees starter Bob Turley picks up the win, while Bobby Shantz gets the save. Both teams combine to get 32 hits for a new World Series record. The series is now tied at 1-1.

1963 - Slugger Frank Howard leads the Dodgers to a 2-1 win over the Yankees with a HR and single giving the Dodgers, a 4-game sweep in the 1963 World Series. Yankees starter Whitey Ford gives up only 2 hits is the loser as Sandy Koufax is the winner with a complete game, allowing just 6 hits and 1 run. The Dodgers win the game, when Willie Davis sacrifice fly scores the winning run after Joe Pepitone loses a throw to throw at 1st base, allowing Junior Gillian to be safe. Pepitone claim that he lost the sight of throw because of the crowd’s white shirts.

1965 - Former Yankees DH/OF Ruben Sierra (1995-1996, 2003-2005) was born. On July 28, 1995, Ruben was traded by the Oakland A’s along with Jason Beverlin to the Yankees for OF/DH Danny Tartabull. Ruben was a major disappointment with the Yankees. On July 31,1996, Ruben was traded by the Yankees along with P Matt Drews (minors) to the Detroit Tigers for 1B/DH Cecil Fielder. On June 6,2003, Ruben was traded by the Texas Rangers to the Yankees for minor league OF Marcus Thames. On his 2nd tour, Ruben was a valuable player for the Yankees, providing power off the bench.

1977 - The Yankees turn to remarkable Ron Guidry to even their AL Playoff series with the Kansas City Royals. Guidry turns in a 3-hit, 6-2 win, highlighted by Cliff Johnson’s 5th inning HR and 6th inning run-scoring double.

1978 - The Yankees overcome 3 HRs by Kansas City slugger George Brett to edge the Royals by a score of 6-5 in a thrilling Game 3 at Yankee Stadium. The winning run scored on Thurman Munson’s 2-run HR in the bottom of the 8th inning, after the Yankees had fallen behind by the score of 5-4, in the top of the 8th inning.

1985 - Yankees starter Phil Niekro becomes the 18th MLB 300-game winner as he blanked the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 8-0, on the last day of the 1985 AL season. At age of 46, Phil Niekro became the oldest pitcher to throw a shutout in MLB history.

2009 - In the first ALDS, New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins by the score of 7 -2 in the 1st postseason game to be played in New Yankee Stadium. Just like old times, Derek Jeter has a key hit, a game-tying home run of of Twins starter Brian Duensing in the 2nd inning. The Yankees and CC Sabathia roll from that point on, with Alex Rodriguez and Hideki Matsui, who blasts a 2-run homer, collect the key hits in the 5th inning.

October 7th

1904 - Jack Chesbro got his 41st victory of the 1904 AL season as the New York Highlanders defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 3-2. His 41 wins is still a Yankees club and MLB pitching record for most wins in a MLB season.

1927 - New York Yankees starter Herb Pennock is handed an 8-0 lead; he takes a perfect game into the 8th inning. The left-handed starter retires Glenn Wright, but Pie Traynor breaks the spell with a single and Clyde Barnhart doubles him home. Pennock settles for a 3-hit, 8-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates to give the Yankees a commanding 3-0 edge in the 1927 World Series.

1928 - In the 1928 World Series, New York 1B Lou Gehrig hits 2 HRs to led the Yankees to a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, giving them a 3-0 lead in the series. Yankees starter Waite Hoyt gets the win for the Bronx Bombers. Also Babe Ruth and Cedric Durst hit HRs for the Bombers.

1933 - Former Yankees P Bud Daley (1962-1964) was born. Bud Daley was obtained from the Kansas City A’s by the Yankees on June 14,1961 for P Art Ditmar and OF/1B/3B Deron Johnson. He had won 16 games for the A’s in 1959-1960, making the AL All Star team. He went 18-16 for the Yankees (1961-1964). He won the pennant clinching game in 1961. In the 1961 World Series, he was the winning pitcher in the 5th and final game over Cincinnati, working the final 7 innings in long relief of starter Ralph Terry. Overall he allowed no runs in 8 innings in 3 World Series appearances. He missed most of the 1963 AL season with arm injury. He was traded to the Cleveland Indians after the 1964 AL season as part of the players to be named later (along with P Ralph Terry) in the Pedro Ramos trade.

1950 - At Yankee Stadium, rookie hurler Whitey Ford, with a 9th inning help from Allie Reynolds, beat Bob Miller and the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 5-2, as the Yankees complete the World Series sweep of the Phillies "Whiz Kids." It would be the 1st of Ford’s 10 World Series career wins. Yankees INF Jerry Coleman wins the Babe Ruth Award as the 1950 World Series MVP. The sweep of the Phillies gives the Yankees their 13th World Championship.

1952 - During the 7th Game of the 1952 World Series, Yankees 2B Billy Martin makes a dramatic running catch on a high infield pop with the bases loaded as the Yankees win their 4th consecutive World Championship by downing the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 4-2. Yankees reliever Bob Kuzava picks up the save for winning Yankee hurler Allie Reynolds.

1958 - In Game 6 of the 1958 World Series, the Yankees pull even against the Milwaukee Braves as Hank Bauer hits his 4th HR of the 1958 World Series. The Yankees win the game in 10 innings by the score of 4-3. Ryne Duren gets the win with help from Bob Turley in the 10th inning. Yankees INF Gil McDougald hits a HR in the game.

1961 - At Crosley Field, Yankees RF Roger Maris wins Game 3 of the 1961 World Series with a 9th-inning HR off o Cincinnati Reds P Bob Purkey. The Yankees win, the game by a score of 3-2, as closer Louis Arroyo picks up the victory for the Yankees in relief. Also Johnny Blanchard hit a HR for the Yankees in the game.

1968 - The New York Yankees released veteran OF Rocky Colvaito. He retired as active MLB player, after turning down a Yankees offer to return for the 1969 AL season, as a pitcher, pinch hitter and reserve outfielder.

1988 - The Yankees replaced Manager Billy Martin with former Phillies MLB Manager Dallas Green. Billy Martin will compiled a 1,253-1,013 record (.553) piloting the Tigers, Twins, Yankees, the A's and the Rangers during his 19-year MLB managerial career.

1991 - Former Yankees INF and HOF MLB Manager Leo “Lip” Durocher (1925,1928-1929) passes away. Leo came up with the Yankees, appearing in 210 games hitting .257. He was sold to the Cincinnati Reds. He had been accused of stealing items from his Yankee roommate Babe Ruth.

1998 - New York Yankees 2B Chuck Knoblauch argues for an interference call at 1B instead of picking up the ball while Tribe base-runner Enrique Wilson scores to break a 1-1 tie in the 12th inning of the Indians' 4-1 victory at Yankee Stadium in Game 2 of the 1998 ALCS.

October 8th

1887 - Former Yankees OF Frank “Ping” Bodie (1918-1921) was born. On March 8, 1918, he was traded by the Philadelphia A’s to the Yankees for 1B George Burns. His best season as a Yankee was in 1920, when he hit .296.

1910 - Former Yankees MLB Batting Coach and MLB player Wally Moses was born. Wally was the batting coach for New York Yankees Manager Ralph Houk from 1961-1963. Wally spent most of his MLB playing career with the Philadelphia A’s.

1927 -In Game 4 of the 1927 World Series, facing elimination at Yankee Stadium, the Pittsburgh Pirates were are tied with the Yankees 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning. Reliever Johnny Miljus fanned Lou Gehrig and Bob Meusel with the bases loaded, but a 2-strike wild pitch to Tony Lazzeri allowed Earle Combs to score the winning run for the Yankees and capture the 1927 World Series.

1948 - Former Yankees P Al Orth (1904-1909) passed away (1872-1948). Al went 72-73 with the Yankees after being traded by the Washington Senators in 1904. His best season for the Yankees was in 1906, going 27-17 leading the AL pitchers in wins. In 1905, he went 18-16 for the Yankees.

1948 - Former Yankees C Rick Stelmaszek (1976) was born. On January 23,1976, Rick was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Yankees for P Gerry Pirtle. Rick never played for the Yankees at the MLB Level.

1956- At Yankee Stadium, New York Yankees starter Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in World Series history for a 2-0 triumph over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Sal “The Barber” Maglie, the opposing pitcher, gave up only 5-hits to the Yankees. Mickey Mantle hits his 3rd HR of the 1956 World Series.

1959 - Former Yankees P Mike Morgan (1981) was born. On November 3, 1980, Mike was traded by the Oakland A’s to the Yankees for INF Fred Stanley. Mike went 7-11 in 30 games for the Yankees. December 9, 1982, Mike was traded by the Yankees along with 1B/OF Dave Collins, minor league 1B Fred McGriff, and cash to the Toronto Blue Jays for P Dale Murray and OF Tom Dodd.

1960 - Bobby Richardson’s Grand Slam HR supports Yankees starter Whitey Ford’s shutout of 10-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. As Whitey Ford continues his quest to catch Babe Ruth’s 29 2/3 scoreless innings pitched World Series mark.

1961 - Yankees Whitey Ford set a World Series record for consecutive scoreless innings by extending his streak to 32 innings in a 7-0 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds in Game 4. Hall Of Fame pitcher Babe Ruth had held the mark of 29 2/3 innings. As Yankees veteran OF Yogi Berra put it, “1961 wasn’t a good year for the Babe.”

1977 - The Yankees rip Kansas City Royals starter Larry Gura for 6-hits and 4 runs in 2-innings, continue on to a 6-4 win to even their series with the Royals at 2-2. Yankees closer Sparky Lyle turns in 5 1/3 innings of relief work to gain a win.

1978 - The Yankees clinch their 3rd straight AL Championship by defeating the Kansas City Royals by the score of 2-1 at Yankee Stadium, behind the pitching of Ron Gudiry and Rich Gossage, with HR power supplied by Graig Nettles and Roy White.

1995 - In the bottom of the 11th inning, Edgar Martinez drove home the tying and winning runs with a double to left field to rally the Seattle Mariners to a 6-5 win and the AL division series over the Yankees. Martinez batted .571 with 10 RBI in the best-of-5 series. Ken Griffey, Jr., who beat the relay throw home to score the winning run, belted 5 HRs in the series.

2004 - Former Yankees 1B Johnny Sturm (1941) passed away. 1st baseman Johnny Sturm made his big league debut with the Yankees in 1941. He hit .239 as the club's regular 1B. In 1941 World Series, he got a hit in each of the 5 games played. After that season, he enlisted in the Army and served in World War II. During his time in the military he lost the tip of his right index finger in a tractor accident. Sturm tried to make a comeback with the Yankees in 1946, but a broken wrist ended the attempt, before he played in a game. After his playing days ended, he was a minor league manager who was largely responsible for discovering Mickey Mantle, when he gave the young player a tryout. He also spent time as a MLB scout. Johnny Sturm died of heart failure at age of 88.

October 9th

1898 - Former Yankees 3B Joe Sewell (1931-1933) was born. After playing 2B with the Cleveland Indians for 11 years, Joe joined the New York Yankees for the 1931-1933 AL seasons. He hit .301 in 1931. Joe was on the 1932 World Championship team, hitting .272 as their regular 3B. Joe finished MLB career with a .312 lifetime BA and with only 114 career strike-outs, making him the toughest player to strike out, ever be elected to the HOF.

1921 - Babe Ruth hits his 1st World Series HR to lead the Yankees to their 1st series game victory over the Giants by the score of 3-0. This game will be the only Sunday game that Yankee hurler Carl Mays ever hurled in his 15-year MLB career.

1926 - St. Louis Cardinals Grover Alexander scatters 8 hits in Game 6 of the 1926 World Series while the Cards tee off Yankees pitchers at Yankee Stadium for a 10-2 romp that sends the 1926 World Series to a 7th game.

1928 - Yankees slugger Babe Ruth hits 3-HRs in a World Series game for the 2nd time in his Yankee career as the Yankees beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 7-3. Yankees starter Waite Hoyt picks up the win for the Bombers.

1938 - In the 1938 World Series, the Yankees became the 1st team to win 3 successive World Championships, defeating the Chicago Cubs by the score of 8-3. Yankees starter Red Ruffing posted his 2nd victory of the 1938 World Series game as the Yankees sweep the Cubs for the 2nd time in 6 years.

1941 - Former Yankees 1B/OF Joe Pepitone (1962-1969) was born. Before the 1958 AL Season, the Yankees signed Joe as an MLB amateur free agent. He was one of 3 rookies that made the 1962 Yankees (others: Pitcher Jim Bouton and INF Phil Linz). Joe replaced Bill Skowron as regular 1B in 1963. He hit .271. He was an AL Golden Glove winner for 1B in 1965-1966 and 1969. Joe was moved to the OF, when Mickey Mantle was moved to 1B in 1967. Joe was on the 1963-1965 AL All Star teams. After several problems with Yankees management during the 1969 AL season, he was traded in the off-season to the Houston Astros for former Yankees farmhand OF/1B/C Curt Blefary.

1949 - The Yankees pound the Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 10-6 to win the 1949 World Series in 5 games. Pinch hitter and 3B Bobby Brown is the Yankees hitting hero, batting .500 and driving in 5 runs. Closer Joe Page picks up the save for the Yankees, as Joe DiMaggio hits a HR. The World Series ends with the Yankees hitting .226 to Dodgers .210, but the Yankee pitching holds up with a 2.80 ERA, while the Bums pitchers post a high 4.30 ERA.

1951 - The New York Yankees rookie INF Gil Mc Dougald’s grand-slam-HR highlighted the Yankees 13-1 win against the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds. Yankees starter Eddie Lopat picks up a complete game victory.

1956 - The Brooklyn Dodgers bounce back after Yankee’s Don Larsen's perfect game to tie the World Series in Game 6. Dodgers’ pitcher Clem Labine comes out of the bullpen to pitch a 1-0, victory over the Yankees in 10 innings. The Bums scored the games only run on a misplayed ball in the OF by Yankees Enos “Country” Slaughter

1957- With veteran starter Warren Spahn stricken by the flu, Lew Burdette, pitching with 2 days rest, hurls his 3rd complete game and 2nd shutout as the Milwaukee Braves beat the Yankees, by the score of 5-0 to win the 1957 World Series. Lew was originally signed with the Yankees, but he was traded during the 1951 AL season for veteran Boston Braves P Johnny Sain, who helped the Yankees win the 1951 AL pennant.

1958 - Yankees hurler Bob Turley pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings in relief of Yankees starter Don Larsen to beat the Milwaukee Braves by the score of 6-2 for the 1958 World Series title. The Yankees became the 1st team since 1925 to win the World Series after being down 1-game to 3-games. Yankees 1B Bill Skowron’s 3-run HR helps the Yankees win the game.

1969 - Former Yankees minor league INF Kevin Jordan was born. On June 4,1990, Kevin was drafted by the Yankees in the 20th round of the 1990 MLB amateur player draft. Kevin never played for the Yankees at the MLB level. On February 9,1994, Kevin was traded by the Yankees along with pitchers, Ryan Karp and Bobby Munoz to the Philadelphia Phillies for a player to be named later and starter Terry Mulholland. The Phillies would send Jeff Patterson on November 8,1994 to the Yankees to complete the trade. Kevin played from 1995-2001 in the MLB with the Phillies.

1976 - The Yankees open their 1st post-season play since 1964 AL season and their 1st AL Playoff Series appearance ever by dousing the Kansas City Royals by the score of 4-1 in Kansas City. Yankees starter Catfish Hunter tossed a 5-hitter against the Royals.

1977 - The Yankees rallied for 3 runs in the 9th inning to beat the Kansas City Royals by the score of 5-3. They take the 1977 AL pennant in the 5th game of the ALCS playoffs.

1996 - Yankees CF Bernie Williams hit a HR in the 11th inning to give the Yankees, a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series. The Yankees received a great help from a young fan, when Jeff Maier (age 12) created a game-tying HR by Derek Jeter in the 8th inning, when he reached out and grabbed a ball that was about to be caught by Orioles RF Tony Tarasco.

2004 - At Minneapolis, the Yankees rallied for 4 runs to tie the game in the 8th inning, then pushed across the winning run in the 11th inning on a wild pitch. The 6-5 win against the Twins gave them a 3-1 AL Division series victory and sends them back to Yankee Stadium, where they will open against the Red Sox in the best-of-seven ALCS.

2005 - The Yankees forced an ALDS Game 5 by defeating the Angels by the score of 3-2.

2009 - Twins closer Joe Nathan gives up a game-tying 2-run HR to the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez in the 9th inning. Minnesota wastes a slew of opportunities to put New York away in Game 2 of their ALDS, losing 4-3 in 11 innings. Mark Teixeira hits a walk-off HR off of Twins hurler Jose Mijares to end the game, after Minnesota wastes a bases-loaded, none out opportunity in the top of the 11th inning.
