Shaughnessy Making Excuses For Sox

From Dan Shaughnessy:
One team is going all out to win every day.

The other team is the Red Sox - asking you to stand back and look at the big picture.

The starting lineups told you everything you needed to know about the respective approaches of these rivals. Yankees manager Joe Girardi, burning his guys in a manner like Don Zimmer (circa 1978), put out his best nine players along with the winningest pitcher in baseball (tied with Adam Wainwright going into yesterday’s games). Jorge Posada wound up being a late scratch because of an injury, but the point was made. Girardi used his big guns. The Yankees are going wall to wall to clinch the division and the best record in the American League, ASAP.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, are using these final days to get some rest and tune up for the playoffs. Terry Francona started Rocco Baldelli in right, Jed Lowrie (hitting .158 entering the game) at short, and Brian Anderson in left. Chris Woodward played short in the eighth and dropped a throw from Victor Martinez that led to a pair of unearned runs. If not for four hit batsmen (two each side), this could have been March 18 at City of Palms Park.

The message from Boston was clear: everything is settled. The Sox are going to win the wild card. They are not going to challenge the Yankees for home-field advantage. Let Girardi wear his guys out. The Sox are getting ready for the playoffs. Call it Tito’s rope-a-dope.

“The mind-set is to manage everything to win,’’ Francona said. “It’s not just one thing. We want to show up and play the game right and be cognizant of what we are trying to accomplish.’’

Occasionally, this means giving a guy like Jason Bay a day off when the Yankees are taking your lunch money. It means keeping your bench sharp. It means giving the big guys a rest. It means thinking big-picture.

Girardi clearly feels differently and yesterday said, “I thought it was important that we continue to play meaningful games, I do. I think at this time of year, it’s important that you play those and that you don’t necessarily let your guard down and you keep playing hard and keep playing winning baseball. To be able to win that series out in Anaheim, I thought was real important. And to be able to win these two tough games, I thought was important as well.’’

Two managers. Two theories. Sox fans might not agree with Francona, but he knows his team and has a pretty good track record in this area.

This is why you are asked not to be bothered that the Sox are 1-8 against the Yankees since Aug. 6. This is why you should close your eyes and think about October if the Yankees beat the Sox again today and clinch the American League East.

“Right now, we haven’t played the greatest,’’ said Youkilis. “We’re just winding it up. We’re going home. We’ll be focused on playing better ball to come. Both of us are probably going to the playoffs. We’ve just got to go out now and win three games so we can make the playoffs.’’
I guess that's why they lost the previous six out of seven to the Yanks coming into this series too. After all they're just playing for the wild card, right?

I wonder if this idiot - by idiot I mean Red Sox fan - saw the lineup the Yankees used to beat the Angels the other day. Probably not. After all he's got to cover (the asses) of his Red Sox. He also seemed to forget that Jorge Posada missed two of the three games this series, and that Johnny Damon sat today. Two guys who would likely have played had this game "mattered".

It probably also doesn't matter that the Yankees pounded Jon Lester on Friday because he was probably trying out new pitches or something. Why would he try to pitch well when the games don't matter? That would just be silly.

Anyway, for a team that has yet to clinch anything, they might want to try winning some of these games, but hey, that's just this Yankees fan's opinion.

At least Nick Cafardo has a clue.

2009 Regular Season Yankee Awards, Part One

I have no idea if Greg or YB want to do something like this so bear in mind that this my opinion and my opinion alone. They had no input on this, so don't blame them if you think I got something wrong. Also, I realize that their is still some more time left in the regular season, but they really mean nothing to the Yankees and I think its pretty safe to award these awards now.

MVP- Derek Jeter

I was tempted to give this to C.C. Sabathia and I know Mark Teixeira has his proponents, but in the end Derek Jeter was just to good this year. The Captain wildly exceeded my own expectations for him this year with a major career Renaissance. In a year were he became the Yankees all-time hits leader, he put up a line of .332/.403/.461. That's huge production from a shortstop. Especially, with him actually playing some damn good defense for once. All facets of his game were improved. He is currently two short of his career high in stolen bases and that short right field porch has helped him become a moderate power threat once more. Were it not for Joe Mauer's historically good season, Derek would probably run away with the AL MVP award. This is coming from a guy who isn't necesarily Jeter's biggest fan either.

Cy Young- C.C. Sabathia

This doesn't really come as a surprise to anyone, does it? The big man was slightly dissapointing early on, after being inked to his massive contract. However, he lived up to his reputation as a second half pitcher and has been money since the All Star Break. Sabathia filled the gap left by Mike Mussina's absence and then some. He has been everything you could look for in an ace. He has eaten up 227.1 innings, he has a shot at 20 wins, he is sixth in the league in strikeouts, his ERA, FIP, and tRA are all in the 3.00's, and he's shown up in big games against the Sox. Of course he wasn't what he was for the Brewers last year, but that wasn't what the Yankees needed and its not really realistic to ask for much more from the guy. He still has long time left in pinstripes and the real test for C.C. with come this October, however, right now things look pretty good for Carsten Charles in the Bronx.

Rolaids Relief- Phil Hughes

Its been a long time since anybody other than Mariano Rivera has won this award. However, this year Phil Hughes burst onto the scene in a way that no reliever has since 1996 when a skinny kid from Panama made his name setting up for John Wetteland en route to a World Championship. So much has been written about Phil's new poise on the mound that I feel stupid dragging up the numbers. However, they're stunning enough that they're worth restating. Through 49.2 innings in the bullpen he has an ERA of 1.27, he's struck out 62, and boasts a K/BB of 4.77. Perhaps the most impressive stat is his OPS+ against. That's 21. Try and wrap your mind around that. This is no knock on Mariano of course who only recently had his second blown save of the season. Its just that Hughes has been so incredibly good in the bullpen that it merits acknowledgment of some sort.

Comeback Player of the Year- Robinson Cano

This one was very difficult because the Yankees had so many guys that bouncebacked from bad years. We knew back in April that this was going to be an issue and the Yankees faith in guys like Nick Swisher, Melky Cabrera, Derek Jeter, Hideki Matsui, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada really paid off. Matsui in particular really could have won this award. Robi Cano stood head and shoulders above the rest though. His all important batting average jumped by fifty points from 2008 to 2009. This is with a BABIP only a couple ticks above his career average. He also seemed to develop some plate disciplince, swinging at bad pitches less and good pitches more. Cano set new highs in power, as well. His 47 doubles rank third in the league and his 200 hits (including two walk offs from the "choker") and 24 home runs both mark new career highs. His defense was much improved and all in all this year was nothing short of a huge success for the young second baseman.

The second, and final part of this will be coming soon.

Yanks Sweep Sox To Wrap Up Division Title

Step one: complete.

With their 100th victory of the season the Yankees not only wrapped up their first division title since 2006, but also homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. To make things even sweeter they did it against Boston at home.

Andy Pettitte started for the Yanks, and after once again struggling early he settled down and pitched very well. In 6 innings the veteran southpaw allowed two runs on seven hits, walked three, and struck out four.

The Yanks fell behind 2-0 after two and a half, but Melky Cabrera got the Yankees on the board with a solo homer in the third, his 13th of the season.

They would then took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth. After Boston starter Paul Byrd -- who pitched very well today -- got two quick outs, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez hit back-to-back singles to knock Byrd out of the game. Terry Francona called on Takashi Saito to face Hideki Matsui and the move didn't work out too well. After falling behind 0-2 Matsui worked the count to 2-2, and then lined a fastball just in front of J.D. Drew in right for a two-run single.

Brian Bruney then came in for Andy Pettitte and pitched 1.2 innings of shutout baseball. He retired all five batters he faced, and may have put himself back in contention for a postseason roster spot. Phil Coke relieved Bruney and got the final out of the 8th by striking out David Ortiz.

Mark Teixeira added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with his 38th home run of the season. He's now just one behind Carlos Pena for the league lead. Pena is on the DL so there's a good chance he'll be passing him later this week.

That set things up for Mariano Rivera's 44th save of the year, which thanks to a brainfart by Robinson Cano was a little more difficult than it should have been, but he got the job done. The final out was a slow comebacker off the bat of Jacoby Ellsbury, the place went nuts and it was party time!

By the way, remember that 0-8 start against the Sox? Well, after taking 9 of the last 10 the season series ends in a 9-9 tie.

Savoring the Moment

With the inflated expecatations and the inevitability of the Yankees clinching of the AL East title, its obvious to turn to what comes next. However, its been a regular season that I'm going to remember for a long time regardless of what this team does in October. So lets stop for a minute and appreciate what we saw.

Obviously, the highlights stick out in my mind. The emergence of Hughes in the bullpen, A-Rod hitting a home run on his first at bat back, Pettitte's almost perfect game, Gardner's inside the park home run, Melky hitting for the cycle, the three straight walk wins, Nick Swisher's amazing April, Sabathia's dominance since the All Star Break, the four game set to bury the Sox, clinching against the Sox, seeing the new ballpark for the first time, and everything else that I'm probably forgetting. Its tough to pick a favorite but give it a shot in the comments section.

Their's also the times when it looked like the season would go down the drain. Teixeira's complete ineptitude at the plate in April, the entire team's slow start, Boston's eight straight wins to start off the year, Wang's horrid performance, Joba's inconsistency, Boston's trade for Victor Martinez, the park's early homer happy tendency and empty seats, A-Rod's steroid revelation, Joe Torre's trashing of the team, and A-Rod's injury in March.

All in all though, its been a great season and I've enjoyed writing here for the past few months. Its been great and hopefully we'll see our team baptize the new Stadium with a championship banner this October. For now though, just enjoy the moment.

The Yankees clinched the 1951 AL pennant with an 11-3 victory in the nightcap, behind Yankees starter Vic Raschi.

1970 - Former Yankees minor league P Mike DeJean was born. Mike was drafted by the Yankees in the 24th round of the 1992 MLB amateur player draft. He never played for the Yankees at the MLB level. On November 20, 1995, Mike was traded by the Yankees to the Rockies for C Joe Girardi.

1978 - Ron Guidry wins his 24th game of the 1978 AL season, with a 4-hit, 3-1 win over the Blue Jays. Yankees OF Roy White has a great game driving in the Yankees 1st run and robbing former Yankees teammate Otto Velez of a late inning HR that would have tie the game. Their lead in the AL East remains at 1 game.

1999 - The Yankees defeat the Orioles at Camden Yards by a score of 9-5. The Birds chase Yankees starter Ed Yarnall for 7-hits, 5 runs, but Ramiro Mendoza and Mo Rivera hold the Birds, so the Yankees can come back for the victory. Tino Martinez hits a HR for the Yankees.

2001 - At Yankee Stadium, starter Mike Messina throws a complete game 3-hitter, 7-0 shutout victory against his former Orioles teammates. The Yankees hitting attack is led by a Bernie Williams HR and Tino Martinez’s double and triple.

2005 - Yankees All Star 3B Alex Rodriguez hits his 47th HR in the Yankees 2-1 victory over the Orioles. His shot broke Joe DiMaggio’s-season club record for HRs by a right-handed batter, set in 1937.

2007 - The Red Sox clinch the AL East title, bringing to an end a streak of 9 consecutive division titles by the Yankees, dating back to 1998. The Yankees will not miss the Postseason however, having clinched the American League Wild Card.
