The Yanks finished off a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners with an impressive come from behind victory today at The Stadium. The win was the Yankees 5th in a row, and with the win the Yankees move out of last place in the AL East.
Chien-Ming Wang started and for the second straight time was very shaky. In 6.1 IP he allowed 5 runs on 7 hits, he also walked a season high 4 batters. He didn't seem to have much command on any of his pitches today, and Girardi probably left him in one inning too long.
Edwar Ramirez relieved Wang and was very good once again. In 1.2 innings he allowed just 2 hits while striking out 2 and his ERA still sits at 0.00.
Mariano Rivera pitched the 9th and was great, as usual, retiring the side in order, striking out 2, and picking up his 12th save.

MARINERS PITCHING
The Yankees' offense couldn't do much against Mariners' starter Jarrod Washburn. He allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits through 6 innings of work. The Yanks first run of the day came on an RBI single by Derek Jeter in the 3rd scoring Johnny Damon who had previously doubled. His first hit in 18 ABs. The only other run they scored off Washburn came in the 4th on a RBI ground out by Damon, which scored Robinson Cano who led off the inning with a walk.
The Yankees were held in check until the bottom of the 8th, but that's when the Yankees mounted their best comeback of the year so far. With the score 5-2 Seattle Jeter led off with a walk. Bobby Abreu then smacked an RBI double to make it a 5-3 ballgame. M's closer J.J. Putz then came into the game and walked Alex Rodriguez. Following a Jason Giambi strikeout Hideki Matsui then stepped to the plate and chopped a ball between the pitcher's mound and first base, Putz made a nice diving stop on the play but threw the ball over the head of first baseman Richie Sexson. Now with the score 5-4 the Yanks had 1stld and 3rd with only one out. Robinson Cano then tied the game with a sac fly. Jose Molina was then up and hit a ball that should of been caught, but somehow Ichiro didn't make the play, if you watch the replay it really look like Ichiro let the ball fall in. The broadcasters and J. J. Putz couldn't figure out how that ball landed either. Either way the ball did drop, Matsui scored, and the Yanks had a 6-5 lead.

great win today, looks like were coming alive. schedule isnt hard for a while, we should be able to get a nice run going all the way to the all star break.
ReplyDeleteI hope so. For the last 5 games things really look like they're turning around. But that's how baseball is; one week you're hot, the next, you're not.
ReplyDeleteI've been to so many cold crappy weather games this year that i forgot how ripe the garbage smelled at the stadium on a hot sunny day. It was beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYea, it is great, isn't it?
