Offer Still Stands, But Yanks Ready To Go With Hughes

Last night I asked you guys who you thought should be the Yankees fifth starter. So far Andy Pettitte is out to an early lead in the poll to the left. Here's an update on the Pettitte story.

From Anthony McCarron:

Before the Yankees signed Mark Teixeira, they told Andy Pettitte's camp that the pitcher's chances of rejoining the Bombers would be in jeopardy if they signed another big free agent. Now that the Yanks have landed their new first baseman, the odds of Pettitte being a Yankee next year are "55-45 against," according to a baseball official familiar with the Yanks' plans.

Instead, the official said, the Yankees may turn to Phil Hughes, who blew his chance in the rotation last year because of a combination of injuries and ineffectiveness, as a starter behind CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain. Hughes is still considered one of the Yankees' best young players, and many in the organization are eager for him to have another shot.

"It's less likely" that Pettitte returns, the official said on condition of anonymity. "Most (Yankee executives) are thinking of another direction."

Still, the door is not closed on Pettitte, and there likely won't be any permanent decision by the Yankees on his future until the new year. A one-year, $10 million offer from the Yanks is still in effect.
I really don't understand what Pettitte is waiting for. I get that he doesn't want a pay cut - who does? - but he's not going to get much more from another team. And for a couple million dollars less isn't it worth it to play where you want? Unless he's considering retirement he should pick up a phone, call Brian Cashman, and tell him he wants to sign.

  1. Hey Greg, does this site have a mobile version?

  2. Not at the moment, but now that you mention it I will look into getting one.

Do you have an idea how I would go about that?

  4. Erik Bedard in a trade for Matsui.

The reward is worth the risk.. and we still have hughs as a back up if bedard gets hurt. If bedard has a bounce back year.. they still might trade him, but hold him for ransom. GRAB HIM NOW.

We need a second lefty.. If Andy feels 10 million is less than he is worth, then he can wait for a better offer.

  5. Argeny, Ok here's two ways I can do it, tell me which you like better. This way, or this way.

    Basil,

If they can make that trade I'd be all for it, but would Seattle really do that?

  6. The Yankees should sign Pettitte so they have a senior starter in the rotation to help CC deal with adjusting to NY and the pressure that will be intense all season. He's also important in handing off 'Yankeeness' to this next crop of World Series contenders. He's an important connection with the past, the Yankees as a brand always need this to counter the 'guns for hire' degradation that happens to the brand every time they go on a shopping spree.

Pettitte should have signed a month ago. Where else does he think he's going to get to be in a starting rotation on a team that is a top two contender for the World Series?

ps - for a mobile version get a good mobile browser. i've posted comments from my phone just like one does normally. Greg you could also create a slimmed down version of the site - fewer menus and such for mobile phones, which would help with load times. You'll want to look into sniffing requests for mobile, and then server up the site with a different template.

  7. It's time for the Yankees to move on.

Andy can go take that mysterious 3/36 deal.

Based on the Yanks current plans they should hold an open audition for the #5 slot come Feb.

In my world it would be a #4 and #5 audition because Joba would be in the pen.

  8. Anon, what about the two versions I posted above. Which do you prefer?

  9. Matsui is on the last year of his contact. They get out from under Bedards contract, and they put two of Japans biggest stars in one City playing together.

I didn't hear no rumor, or have I read the possiblity of it. But I think its an idea.

The reason against it.. You want to leave a spot open for Hughs.. the reason they want Andy for one year. The more I think about it, they won't do Bedard for that very reason unless they have given up on Hughs.. and I don't see that.

  10. Greg, I prefer the second one. I mean I have a full web browser on my phone but I would prefer it to load quickly and the second option gives all the info minus the pictures and some links. I think its perfect. But I dont know if some people might prefer it the other way.

  11. OK Argenys, it's done. Thanks for the suggestion. I never realized how easy it was to do.

  12. Thank you man, you have made my daily life just alittle easier. ;)

  13. Joba needs to stay in the rotation.

We don't need Pettitte because of his Yankee prestige. We would need him to help out the team...

There is no getting out from under Bedard's contract because he will make less than Matsui and he's not signed long term.

  14. Is it me or is Joba and Hughes due for about 150 innings each? If so isnt that good enough for your 4th and 5th starters?

  15. Hughes can go 160-180.

  17. Kennedy's pitching in PR League was pretty impressive. Not the majors, but better than others being considered for the fifth spot - 1.56 ERA

  19. Yes, they both can go 150 innings or so, but there also other issues that worry me, like Burnett's injury issues, Hughes and Joba also have had some injury issues. It's good to have a workhorse like Pettitte at the end of the rotation.
