These Umps Are a Joke

From Brian Lewis:
After Derek Jeter got called out trying to steal third today _ when replays showed that although the ball beat him there, his left hand got around Scott Rolen's glove and to the bag _ he asked third base ump Marty Foster for an explanation. You won't believe the one he says he got.

When Jeter said "he didn't tag me,'' the shortstop claims Foster actually answered "He didn't have to; the ball beat you.'' Jeter _ irate on the field, restrained by 3B coach Rob Thomson and protected by Joe Girardi _ is essentially saying Foster doesn't know the rules or just lied.

"It's not like that anymore. You can't just say if the ball beat you, you're out. It's not a reason to call someone out. It used to be that way, it is true; but it's not like that anymore,'' crew chief John Hirschbeck said. He didn't know if Foster actually said that, but planned to find out.

"I haven't had a chance to discuss it, and we will. Tomorrow at some point we'll have lunch and we'll talk about it, the whole thing. It's important to get the play right, but it's equally important how you handle it. You can get a play right and say the wrong thing and start a major riot. I'm going to find out what he said.''
Hirschbeck said the right things, but if that's really what Foster said to Jeter on the field then shouldn't he be fired?. If you don't get tagged you're safe, that's the rules.

And that was just one of the three plays they blew today. The Yankees had their chances to win today, and deserve some of the blame for their loss, but I would have loved to have seen how this game plays how if just two of these three plays were called correctly.

  1. Whats up with Pettitte he seems to pitch a great game and then pitches a bad game. Pettitte is a control type pitcher he is walking way too many hitters.

Yeah the umps were a joke they were so many bad calls today.

  2. This comes after Tex was safe TWICE at the plate but was beaten there by the ball both times. Do we know if the ump who called Jetes out was at home plate for either of those games? That's worth finding out.

  3. ok, so one of the plays on Tex was yesterday when the ball beat him home but the catcher was holding the ball in his hand and tagged him with an empty glove. The ump for that game was Marty Foster, the 3rd base ump for today. I wish him to be fired, but that still doesn't change the outcome of today unfortunately. And friday the same ump who called tex safe was the same as todays first base ump who blew 1 or 2 at first. that was john hirschbeck.

  6. This is unbelievable. Insane. If this happened to the other team playing against the Yankees, MLB would do a full on investigation.

This game almost definitely plays out differently if Jeter is safe at 3rd. It's most likely a minimum of 1-0 Yankees right off the bat, and with Toronto reeling and feeling the pressure of a 4 game sweep, getting the lead first could be the difference in a game like this.

  7. The blown call at second is what really bothered me. The one where Jeter backhanded the ball and threw to Cano for the force. If that was called correctly, Rios does not hit a 3 run homer.

  8. True it was a bad call at third but.....what was Jeter doing stealing 3rd with no one out anyway? That's bad base running. NEVER make the 1st or 3rd out at 3rd.....NEVER. He was in scoring position with the heart of line up behind him. He would have scored anyway so there was no reason he needed to advance to 3rd in that spot. Never put your fate in the hands of the umps. Bad calls happen.
