7/6 Minor League Report

(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (46-33) beat Pawtucket (42-38) 3-2 in game 1 of today's doubeheader: Box Score - Recap

PITCHING: Ivan Nova
made his 2nd AAA start for the Yanks in Game 1. He was working on 6 days rest because of all the cancellations for wet grounds. Nova threw a perfect 1st inning, getting 3 ground outs. The PawSox tied the game at 1 in the 2nd on 2 singles and a rbi sac fly. In the 3rd, 3 singles, a stolen base, and rbi sac fly gave Pawtucket a 2-1 lead. Nova tossed scoreless 4th (walk), and 5th (single) innings. He gave up a leadoff double in the 6th before being relieved. Nova's line: 5.1 IP, 2 runs, 7 hits, 2 K--1 BB, 90 pitches---62 strikes, 7 ground outs - 7 flyouts.

Edwar Ramirez
relieved Nova in the 6th with 1 out and a runner on 2nd. He issued a walk, but worked out of the jam. Ramirez tossed a perfect 7th inning, picking up a strikeout. He struck out the side in the 8th, all swinging. 2.2 IP, 0 Runs, 0 Hits, 4 K--1 walk.

Mark Melancon
came on to throw a perfect 9th inning. He gave up a leadoff walk in the 10th, but no further damage. In the 11th Melancon gave up a leadoff single, but got a doubleplay. Melancon picked up the win (4-0). 3.0 IP, 0 Runs, 1 Hit, 0 K--1 BB

OFFENSE:
The Yanks broke out on top in the 1st inning to a 1-0 lead off PawSox starter Michael Bowden. Kevin Russo singled and moved to 3rd on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Austin Jackson followed with a rbi sac fly. In the bottom of the 3rd, Jackson walked, Shelley Duncan
was hit by a pitch, and Juan Miranda got a rbi single to tie the score at 2. In the bottom of the 11th, Russo had a leadoff single, Ramiro Pena moved Russo to 2nd with a sac bunt. Miranda had the game winning rbi on a single to give SWB the 3-2 win.

PITCHING: Kei Igawa got the start for the Yanks. Igawa shutout the PawSox thru the first 5 innings. In the 6th, 1 run scored on a walk and rbi double cut the Yankee lead to 4-1. Igawa got the win to up his mark to 7-3 on the year. Igawa's line: 6.0 IP, 1 run, 6 hits, 3 K--1 walk, 108 pitches---73 strikes, 9 groundouts--6 flyouts.

Anthony Claggett
came on to pitch a perfect 7th with a strikeout to preserve the shutout, and the sweep of the doubleheader.

OFFENSE:
The Yanks jumped on knuckleballer Charlie Zink in the 1st inning for a 2-0 lead. Singles by Kevin Russo, Ramiro Pena, and Shelley Duncan scored the 1st run. Juan Miranda followed with a RBI sac fly. The Yanks scored 2 more runs in the 2nd on a triple by Doug Bernier, RBI sac fly by Russo, and solo home run by Austin Jackson (4) to take a 4-0 lead. The Yanks stranded the bases loaded in the 1st, 5th, and 6th innings. They stranded 25 runners in the 2 games.

NOTES: Sergio Mitre
is scheduled to start for SWB Tuesday. Kevin Russo has reached base in 29 straight games.
