It wasn't a great spring training for A.J. Burnett, but at least it ended on a high note. He earned his second win of the spring this afternoon after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, and struck out two in 4.2 innings pitched.
"That was a good tune-up," Burnett said. "I was throwing some good hooks when I needed to, with guys on in strikeout situations. Good changeups, too. A little bit of everything. It went strong." (source: Bryan Hoch)
His manager also felt good about today's outing:
"I thought it was the best he's looked," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I was really pleased with the way he threw the ball today." (source: Bryan Hoch)
This was also the last day for Burnett to work on his new changeup until the real games begin, and he sounds pretty confident about the pitch.
“Today we realized (the changeup) was really good, so we threw more than the norm,” Burnett said. “I’m sure there will be days when that’s off and I’ll have a hook. The fact that I’ve worked on it enough to have confidence in it to throw it whenever is big, I think. I’m not going to get beat by it if it’s not on that day. I learned that too.” (source: Chad Jennings)
Following Burnett, the bullpen was excellent today. Royce Ring, Chan Ho Park, Joba Chamberlain, David Robertson and Lance Pendleton combined to throw 4.1 innings of one hit baseball--a single allowed by D-Rob--and struck out six.

Curtis Granderson continues to get his bat where in needs to be with the season fast approaching. He picked up two more hits, including a double. He is now hitting .298 this spring after starting off terribly. Mark Teixeira, Nick Swisher and Robinson Cano also picked up two hits apiece. Cano also had two RBI. Nick Johnson and Ramiro Pena also picked up RBIs today.

Tomorrow's Game

The Yanks head back to Tampa for their final Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. Andy Pettitte will get his final tuneup of the spring, and he will be facing Baltimore right-hander Alfredo Simon. Game time is set for 1:05 pm, and the game will be on YES and ESPN.
