News & Notes

Break up the Yankees:
In their last 32 games they're 24-8, and they're now two and a half games ahead of the Red Sox for first place. They're 18-8 in July and since Alex Rodriguez returned they're 49-25.

- The Yankees are second in the American League with a 27-23 record on the road, behind only the Angels who are 28-20.

- Here's what Mark Teixeira told Marc Carig about the Yankees after their quiet trade deadline day: "We have everything we need here to win."

- He's also reporting that Jonathan Albaladejo has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room for Shelley Duncan.

- Both starters have never faced the opposing team.

- Nick Swisher has a six-game hitting streak.

- On the current road trip the Yankees are just 8-for-37 (.216) with runners in scoring position.

Stick around and discuss the game

Peavy Headed to the White Sox.... Again

USA Today's Bob Nightengale is reporting that the White Sox have once again traded for Jake Peavy, only this time Peavy approved the deal.

Tonight's starter Clayton Richard is part of the deal. So is RHP Adam Russel, and minor leaguers RHP Dexter Carter, and LHP Aaron Poreda.

A Quiet Deadline for the Yanks

So, the non-waivers trade deadline has come and gone and the Yankees stand pretty much where they did before with their chief rival improves. Leading up to the deadline most fans were dying to see a pitcher added. Brian Bannister and Justin Duscherer were a couple names bandied around. Instead we end up with the Yanks adding only Jerry Hairston Jr. while Boston acquired Victor Martinez and Casey Cotchman.

Hairston isn't a big deal. He's just a depth move and an upgrade over Cody Ransom, who should finally be gone in a day or two. I certianly hope the Yankees didn't give up much for him but he has playing time everywhere except catcher and pitcher and his .247 EQA is at least better than Ransom's. I doubt he really makes a difference but he could add a win or two over Ransom. Their is obviously going to be some frustration over Cash only getting a backup infielder while the Sox added a hitter like Victor Martinez. The deadline doesn't mean as mch this year though.

Cashman hinted at this uneventful deadline a few days ago when he implied that the deadline wouldn't mean much this year because more players would slip through waivers. Considering the type of players that the Yankees might be looking at to fill out their rotation, its not impossible for them to add another pitcher in August if Mitre can't get his act together. For example, its easy for me to see Aaron Harang slipping through waivers and getting to the Yankees.

Its definitely not a sign that Cash is giving up on the season that he did nothing and I'll have to trust his judgement here. I'll have more on the Red Sox moves and they're no reason to panic. So, calm down Yankees fans and enjoy a first place lead.

Yanks get Hairston and Nothing Else

The Yankees acquired Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Reds for Single-A catcher Chase Weems. Hairston is hitting .254/.305/.397 with 8 HR and 27 RBI in 86 games for the Reds this year. He's a career .259/328/.372 hitter and can play short, second, third, and all three outfield positions.

Weems was hitting .260 BA with a HR and 14 RBI for Charleston.

So while the Red Sox add Victor Martinez and Casey Kotchman, the Yanks get a utility man to replace Cody Ransom.

Way to put all that pressure on Boston, Cash.

The Trade Deadline Thread - Sox make big move

(Use this thread to discuss all trade deadline deals until today's 3 p.m. chat. All moves and rumors that I hear about will be posted here. Also, feel free to post any trade rumors you hear or read in the comments section below.)

Updated: 2:31 p.m.: According to Ken Rosenthal, Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard are not in the deal.

Updated 2:04 p.m.: Bob Nightengale is reporting that the Red Sox are about to acquire Victor Martinez from the Indians.

Updated 1:26 p.m.:
Justin Duchscherer's rehab start at Sacramento today was canceled. Could he be on the move?

- The Dodgers sent P Claudio Vargas to the Brewers for C Vinny Rottino.

Update 1:24 p.m.: Orlando Cabrera was traded to the Twins for Tyler Ladendorf.

- Jarrod Washburn was traded earlier in the day to the Tigers for Luke French, and Mauricio Robles.

Watch your Forearms: Shelley Headed to Chicago

Chad Jennings is reporting that Shelley Duncan is on his way to Chicago to join up with the Yanks. No word on who will be sent down, but I'm assuming it will be either David Robertson, Jonathan Albaladejo or Mark Melancon.

Shelley is having a big year down in Triple-A, hitting .268/.363/.548 with 25 HR and 75 RBI.

One Last Suggestion

With only hours before the deadline their is one move that seems to jump out to me that the Yankees should do that nobody is talking about. They need a starting pitcher right now. Sergio Mitre has impressed nobody in his first two starts and nobody expects him to stick. As we get closer to the deadline, options keep coming off the table. The one guy that seems to be both available for a reasonable price and be able improve the Yankees is Brian Bannister.

A year ago when somebody suggested him I thought they were crazy. This year though, he has broken out and established himself as an effective pitcher. He made some changes to his approach in the offseason and has lowered his FIP to 4.13 through 116 innings this year. His GB% has shot up over ten percent and his K/BB is better than his career mark. Bannister is also under team control at a cheap price for the next few years. This is a guy who could actually have a spot in the Yankees rotation for years to come.

They were right to shy away from Cliff Lee and Jarrod Washburn. Its also probably a good idea to avoid the asking price for Roy Halladay. However, I have to hope with four hours left, that they're still looking for a starting pitcher. If they are, Brian Bannister is their guy.

Shameless Self Promotion: Don't forget about our live chat from 3-4 PM ET leading up to the deadline (may run a little late).

Washburn on the Move

Well, so much for that. Washburn has been traded to the Tigers for Luke French, and Mauricio Robles. A few different outlets are reporting it now. I wasn't the biggest Washburn fan but he was an option for the Yankees and this gives the Tigers a very formidable rotation.

Is $650K really holding the Yanks back from a pitcher they might need?

ESPN Insider has a report that the Yankees asked the Royals about RHP Brian Bannister today, but the talks "went nowhere" because the Yanks asked the Royals to pay the around $650,000 of the money left his contract for this season. Clearly the Royals weren't too fond of the idea.

Earlier this week (or maybe last week) the Yanks were discussing a deal with the Reds for Bronson Arroyo and asked if they would pick up some of his $17 million contract. That I can understand, but missing out on a pitcher you might need because of just $650K is ridiculous, especially when it's the Yankees we're talking about.

Now don't get me wrong, Brian Bannister is not going ot be the savior, but he would be a solid number five starter on this staff. As of today he was 6-7 with a 3.80 ERA, which ain't too shabby. He also is just 28-years-old and is making just $1.74 million this season.

Maybe they want to see what's going to happen with Jarrod Washburn first before making any other deals or decisions on deals, which I completely understand. He's the better pitcher, and he's probably their main target right now anyway. But if they the cannot land Washburn a guy like Bannister isn't such a plan B.

The Latest Washburn Rumblings

(I posted this at 2:30 a.m. so a lot may have changed between now and the time you're reading this.)

A few hours ago Jon Heyman posted this on his Twitter page:
yankees, mariners now talking washburn. yanks say no on joba, hughes, jax, romine, montero. otherwise, take your pick.
A little later in the night Buster Olney reported that executives from other teams said that they think Seattle will end up holding on to the left-hander. He also said that "The Yankees and Mariners spoke briefly about a proposal early Thursday afternoon, with the Mariners making a request that did not involve either Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes, but the two sides have not spoken since."

So that's that. Your guess is as good as mine, all I know is I hope they get him.

WP - Matt Thornton (5-2)
LP - Phil Hughes (4-3)

It was a rough loss for the Yankees tonight in Chicago as they fell to the White Sox 3-2. After an hour and four minute rain delay both starters, Andy Pettitte and Gavin Floyd, pitched great games holding both offenses in check for most of the night. Pettitte allowed just 1 earned run on 5 hits in 6.1 innings, striking out 8, and did not walk a batter. While Floyd allowed just 1 earned on 4 hits in 7 innings. He struck out 10, and walked just one. Both pitchers had very good stuff tonight and were hitting their spots consistently.

Another reason both starters pitched so well was the ridiculously large strike zone home plate umpire Ted Barrett had tonight. It was a strike zone that would make Eric Gregg proud. Anything near the strike zone was called a strike, especially for Floyd. That's also probably why 7 of his 10 strikeouts were looking.

Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by rookie Gordon Beckham, and that was how the score would remain until the top half of the sixth. Jose Molina led off the inning with a ground-rule double. Two batters later he scored on a Johnny Damon single to tie the game.

Pettitte had an easy sixth, but then got into some trouble in the seventh thanks to some shoddy defense. Jim Thome led off and his a weak dribbler up the first base line. Pettitte came over to field it, but he slipped on the wet grass and failed to make the play, E1. After Paul Konerko struck out A.J. Pierzynski hit a sharp grounder to A-Rod, a ball he probably should have fielded and turned into an inning-ending double play. But instead the ball bounced off his glove to put runners on 1st and 2nd with just one out. (The play was initially scored an error but was then changed it to a hit. I still think it was an error.) That would be all for Pettitte and Phil Hughes came into the game.

Chicago gave the Yanks another chance to get out of the inning, this time when Carlos Quentin hit a tailor-made 5-4-3 double play ball, but Alex Rodriguez took a little too long to get the ball to Robinson Cano, Pierzynski came in with what was probably an illegal slide, and Cano threw the ball where even Mark Teixeira couldn't reach it. Tex try to block it, but it wasn't enough, and the ball trickled off his glove and up the line allowing the run to score and the White Sox had a 2-1 lead.

The score would remain the same until there were two out in the top of the ninth and Nick Swisher was at the plate. He had gone 0-for-3 with 3 strikeouts so far in the game and had really looked awful in the process, so my expectations weren't high. But White Sox reliever Matt Thornton left an 0-1 fastball right down the middle and Swisher sent it over the wall in left for a game-tying solo homer.

Sadly the joy of the Swisher homer was short-lived because the White Sox quickly got runners on 1st and 2nd with one out against Phil Hughes in the bottom of the ninth to knock him out of the game. Then, after Phil Coke was able to get the second out of the inning, Dewayne Wise lined a single off his glove and into center field for a game-winning RBI single. The run and loss was charged to Hughes. It was the first run Hughes has allowed in 25.1 innings.

It was a game the Yankees easily could have won. Besides the terrible defense that cost them a run, they went just 1-for-8 with RISP for the game. Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez came up time after time with men on and each time came up short. Combined they went 0-for-8 with 6 K's and 6 men left on base. Not really what you want from your 3-4 hitters. Add Hideki Matsui and the Yanks 3-4-5 hitters when 0-for-12 with 8 K's and 6 men left on. When you don't play defense and you don't hit with men on it's pretty tough to win.

Their lead in the east dropped back to 2.5 games because Boston won earlier today thanks to a 3-run 7th inning homer by David Roidtiz. The Yanks look to even the series tomorrow night at U.S. Cellular with Sergio Mitre on the mound. He will be facing White Sox southpaw Clayton Richard.
