News & Notes

Break up the Yankees:
In their last 31 games they're 24-7, and they're now two and a half games ahead of the Red Sox for first place. They're 18-7 in July and since Alex Rodriguez returned they're 49-24.

- In 22 starts against the White Sox, Andy Pettitte is 11-9, with a 4.48 ERA. In 11 games in Chicago he's just 3-7, with a 6.83 ERA. Since the all-star game he's 0-1, with a 3.29 ERA. In 13.2 innings he's allowed 5 runs on 11 hits, wlaked 3 and struck out 15.

- Gavin Floyd has faced the Yankees three times, twice as a starter, and is 1-0, with a 6.75 ERA. In 16 innings he's allowed 12 runs on 20 hits, walked 5 walks, and 8 strikeouts.

- The Yankees are second in the American League with a 27-22 record on the road, behind only the Angels who are 28-20.

- Alfredo Aceves should be available tonight.

- Phil Coke is out with a sinus infection.

- It was reported today by Marc Carig that Chien-Ming Wang will not pitch another major league game for at least 12 months.

- In honor of David Ortiz's postive PED test going public today I share with you this t-shirt from one of this blog's readers. You can purchase your own at CustomInk.com. I was told the shirt should cost no more than $15 bucks, and you can see an image of the shirt below.

Blog Stuff: Another reminder about tomorrow's live chat @ 3:00 p.m. It will on be on the blog and I will be using Cover it Live. We'll be discussing all the deadline deals as well as anything Yankee-related. Be there!

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

Another nice thing is that the bullpen is rested. Girardi did not use Hughes, Coke and Aceves and the yanks still won 2 out of 3 against tampa.

... And we're in a rain delay.

Seriously, have you ever seen a summer like this?

CollinM said...

Any word on how long the delay will be?

I wish MLB.TV would keep a little ticker or something that kept subscribers up to date on things like these damn rain delays.

will said...

Last summer?

Greg Cohen said...

There wasn't this much rain last year. The weather stunk, but there wasn't this much rain.

Greg Cohen said...

No, Colin, I have no idea how long this delay will last.

Will said...

so everyone needs to be prepared to give the sox the worst time at the stadium next week. I'm so lucky to have tickets to fridays game. I want to hear a chant of Roid Sox so loud its deafening.

CollinM said...

You guys and gals with tickets to the Sox series next week are so fortunate. I'm dying to hear the reception Ortiz receives.

If interested in the shirt, email me at chrismckeown42@gmail.com , if I order in bulk it would be a much cheaper price than buyig them individually.

GO YANKS!

Brian Danuff said...

Huh. Not a really big ovation for Swish, nor boos or cheers.

Oh my god I love that shirt! You know how stupid Red Sox fans must feel today. Jeez!

Stil think the rest of the names should be released all together, and really soon so we could get this over with.

Brian Danuff said...

LOL Greg you put Yanks-vs-Rays.

Greg Cohen said...

lol woops, forgot to change that. It's been fixed.

...

And Melky makes me eat my words by continuing his hot streak.

...

Why didn't Molina just bunt?

Brian Danuff said...

IDK man. Shit, Damon grounds out and the inning is over.

Greg Cohen said...

The Yankees are in dire need of a big hit tonight. They look tired.

Liam Gallagher said...

Greg, what's a live chat?

Greg Cohen said...

It will be a chat room in a blog post. I figure we'll all chat while the deadline comes and goes. Discuss deals and stuff. Someone asked me why I didn't do them while other blogs do, so I figured I might as well. If the turnout is good and people enjoy it I'll make it a weekly thing.

Liam Gallagher said...

Great, i'll be there!

Greg Cohen said...

Nice, happy to hear it Liam.

...

Hopefully they don't waste this leadoff double. ... One out runner does move. Try bunting. It works. Just get the runner over and tie the game.

Greg Cohen said...

Yea Johnny! Tie game! ... Ok, the double works too.

Liam Gallagher said...

Hopefully Pettitte holds on to this tie game.

Greg Cohen said...

I know. Every time the Yanks score a run he seems to give it right back.

Mario said...

AROD needs to layoff that outside crap, damit, he's overdue for a big hit or a HR...

Anonymous said...

Isn't that usually the case with ARod?

Greg Cohen said...

Are you saying A-Rod doesn't get big hits too often?

Greg Cohen said...

Big DP!

Anonymous said...

Yes I am.

Liam Gallagher said...

This Beckham kid looks like he will be a very good hitter in the future. I can even see the Yankees signing him six-seven years from with a contract. If he stays in the majors for six full seasons.

Greg Cohen said...

Yea, he's the real deal.

Greg Cohen said...

Geeeez, A-Rod has really stunk defensively this season. Hopefully that doesn't cost them this game.

Anonymous said...

FUCKING SHIT CANO!

Greg Cohen said...

Believe it or not, that was partially A-Rod's fault too. It took him forever to get that ball to Robbie. Terrible throw, but A-Rod didn't help at all.

will said...

Shit happens - better cano makesthat mistake now than in the playoffs

will said...

Cano needs to know to leap and make that throw - its a damn tough play

Greg Cohen said...

This strike zone is a freaking joke.

Greg Cohen said...

Johnny Damon is 2-for-5 with a homer and 3 RBI against Thornton. But he also has two K's.

Greg Cohen said...

... Make that 3-for-6. Now Tex needs to come through with a big two-out hit here.

will said...

Good bit of hitting - almost fooled him twice - gotta love tex in this situaution - this the game here

Greg Cohen said...

Damn it, what a terrible at-bat... Looks like the lead will be back down to 2.5 after tonight.

w said...

Damn

will said...

Thorton has everyone fooled

Mario said...

could Alex look any worse tonight, all around, pettitte can't buy run support,

Greg Cohen said...

SWISHER TIES IT!

w said...

Oops he made a mistake :D

Mario said...

OMG, holy crap, swisher, sweet

Greg Cohen said...

Have I mentioned that this strike zone is a joke?

w said...

Shit

Greg Cohen said...

Not feeling too lucky with Coke on the mound tonight.

w said...

Credit to ortiz getting 3 rbi tonight after the world blew up in his face today

MP said...

Coke is going to blow it...gut feeling, i'm sorry

Greg Cohen said...

I feel the same way, MP.

Unknown said...

1 more come on coke!

Greg Cohen said...

OK, well there's one out. One to go...

MP said...

Am I wrong to feel like our relievers fall behind every single batter?

Greg Cohen said...

lol ... No, not on some nights.

Anonymous said...

duces wild

Greg Cohen said...

Fuck.

Unknown said...

o well. Tomorrow's another day. Shake it off tonight.

MP said...

Wow. Saw that coming a mile away.

w said...

Fuck bad luck game

Greg Cohen said...

They gave that game away with errors and terrible hitting. They knew the strike zone was a mile wide and they still looked at strike three seven times.

MP said...

Ah that's a real bad one to lose, dang.

Yeah tough loss you knew when Pettitte slipped on Thome ball it was going to lead to a run. Poor Andy he has been throwing the ball really well lately and having nothing to show for it.

The yanks didn't adjust to the wide strikezone. They needed to be more aggresive in the middle innings.

Oh well cant win everygame. But this game was frustrating. Coke missed catching Wise ball by an inch and Thome scored 2 runs on cheap hits.
