News & Notes

- The Yanks are 45-19 since the All-Star break. They've also won 58 of their last 82, and at 96-56 they have the best record in all of baseball. They currently lead Boston by 6 games in the AL East. They also lead the Angels by 5.5 games for the best record in baseball. Their magic number to clinch the AL East is 6.

- At 44-33 the Yankees have the second best road record in the American League.

- A.J. Burnett has made five starts against the Angels in his career and is 1-2, with a 4.63 ERA. Three of those starts came in Anaheim where he's 0-2, with a 4.50 ERA.

He faced them once this year, and in 7 innings allowed 4 runs on 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 5 in a no decision.

- In 14 games (13 starts) against the Yankees, Scott Kazmir is 6-4, with a 2.53 ERA. This season he's 2-0, with a 2.63 ERA against them in two starts.

In four starts with the Angels, Kazmir is 1-1, with a 1.42 ERA.

- The Yankees a 4-5 against the Angels this year, and 1-4 in Anaheim.

- Phil Coke is still out due to acute gastrits, which is basically a stomach virus. He should be back for the Boston series.

- A little more on this POS lineup: I understand why Jorge Posada is sitting after a night game, and I get that Girardi see the numbers of Nick Swisher, Johnny Damon, and Alex Rodriguez against Kazmir, but I'd much rather see better hitters out their then the likes of Shelley Duncan, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Jose Molina. Is Francisco Cervelli hurt or something? Also, it's worth noting that lefties are hitting .273 against Kazmir this year, while righties are hitting .257.

Here are Girardi excuses via Peter Abraham:

• A-Rod hasn’t had a day off in a while. Resting him today gives him two days off in a row as the team is off tomorrow.

• Posada fouled a ball off his right foot in the fifth inning last night and he is getting x-rays to make sure nothing is broken.

• Swisher fouled a ball off his leg last night and was limping around.

Still, why no Damon, why no Cervelli, and A-Rod doesn't need two days off, especially not when he's swinging the bat like he is.

- Happy 24th birthday to Joba Chamberlain.

- According to Marc Carig, X-rays on Jorge Posada's foot came back negative.

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

I know Kazmir is a lefty, but what do the Yankees have against Hinske? He only ever comes off the bench ad hits a homer.

Greg Cohen said...

No clue. Girardi makes way too big of a deal about this lefty-right matchup crap. In fact, lefties are hitting .273 against Kazmir this year, while righties are hitting .257. Apparently Girardi doesn't have the internet.

Liam Gallagher said...

I'm back from school!

Greg Cohen said...

Hey Liam.

Liam Gallagher said...

Hey.

Liam Gallagher said...

Perfect lineup Joe. WTF?

crossfire said...

Doesn't Girardi realize that the Yanks have an off day tomorrow?

Greg Cohen said...

Apparently he doesn't have the same information we do, CF.

Liam Gallagher said...

They are playing the Angels too. Do you want to win against the Angels Joe?

crossfire said...

By the way, I hate Hairston in the 2 hole. Hope he proves me wrong today but that is a terrible decision.

Bruce Beckett said...

I understand the thinking behind the lineup and I know the most important thing was to win one game in Anaheim, but I have to say two things: (1) This batting lineup has little chance of beating an on-song Kazmir and the Angels and (2) Isn't tomorrow a rest day? Most of the players will be home by midnight thanks to their private jets and will have plenty of time to rest up for the Sox on Friday night.

Liam Gallagher said...

If you want speed in the top of the lineup put Gardner in the 2 spot.

Greg Cohen said...

Hairston in the two spot is absolutely mindless. Bat Gardner second.

crossfire said...

Damn... I'm sorry guys. I think it was my turn to let Joe know the schedule.

Do these guys really need/want time off against the Angels???

How about resting them once we clinch home field? Wouldn't that be a novel idea.

Liam Gallagher said...

Yes CF.

crossfire said...

I wouldn't mind seeing Gardy lead off. Put Jeter behind him. There is nothing in stone that says Jete can't bat second.

In fact, I believe he may have had a bat or a few thousand there.

Greg Cohen said...

True CF.

Anonymous said...

Girardi, why not get Cervelli and Pena in there instead of Hairston and Molina. He's really starting to scare me as to what his playoff roster/subs will look like this October.

Greg Cohen said...

Guys, I've figured it out!

Burnett told Girardi he was going to throw a perfect game today so that's why he put out this crap lineup. See, it all makes sense now.

Liam Gallagher said...

lol?

Anonymous said...

I agree with the Hinske comment. This is very bizarre. An obvious day to give him a start, given the rest of the lineup. Both Gardner and Melky today? Give Hinske some love!

I hereby dub this lineup "jaywalker's row."

Liam Gallagher said...

Just throw in all the bench players.

crossfire said...

Great Greg... you pre-jinxed the perfect game! lol

Greg Cohen said...

I wish I had powers like that.

Bruce Beckett said...

By the way, Girardi told Francesa yesterday that there was no way he would be resting players or fielding anything less than a full-strength lineup in this series. So much for that. Can't understand how Molina gets in the lineup ahead of Cervelli. Another example of Girardi sticking with the old guard. He's tried Hairston in the 2-hole twice now (I think) and we didn't win either game.

crossfire said...

Besides Hairston is at third and he already put the kibosh on one perfect game this year.

Liam Gallagher said...

I like Hairston.......just not batting second.

Liam Gallagher said...

Happy birthday JOBA!!!! Don't suck your next time out.

Liam Gallagher said...

That would be some gift if he didn't stink his next start.

Greg Cohen said...

True, Liam.

Liam Gallagher said...

I just looked at your game thread from last night. 354!

Greg Cohen said...

Yea it was an eventful night. A couple annoying trolls too.

Liam Gallagher said...

Why?

Greg Cohen said...

Why what? Eventful or the trolls?

Eventful because it was a good game and a lot of people were around.

Trolls because they're trolls and jealous of the Yankees success.

Liam Gallagher said...

Trolls.

I see I intrested you in my like of music. Yeah, I love the Beatles. I updataed my profile so their is more crap.

It looks like Jack has spread the stupidness around.

Liam Gallagher said...

Yup, Jack has spread all of his stupidness.

crossfire said...

Curiosity got the better of me so I looked up Hairston's numbers in the 2 hole.

He has played there twice this year.

On 9/12 in a 7-3 loss to the Orioles, Hairston went 0-3 with no walks.

On 9/16 in a 5-4 win against the Jays, Hairston went 0-4 with no walks.

Lets see... that's 0-7 with no walks.

Great idea Joe... I guess you figure that he must be due!

And before this sounds like i'm bashing Hairston, I'm not. I just agree with Liam and probably the rest of you that he should not be batting second.

JoeNYy said...

Hey guys- doing homework and using this as an excuse to myself for not doing it well.

Sometimes, Joe Girardi will do great, but then sometimes, HE'S A FREAKING MORON. Going back to last night, Greg, Joe Torre would never do sh*t like this. At the very least, not until the American League Eastern Division 2009 Banner was hanging in the Bronx.

uhhhh........ **shaking head like Greg****

Liam Gallagher said...

Si senor.

JoeNYy said...

hey Liam

Liam Gallagher said...

Hey Joe, hows it going?

JoeNYy said...

Not bad,
just finishing up homework after 2 hours of doing it already.... UHHHHHH

you?

Liam Gallagher said...

I have homework to do too. I just got home an hour ago, what time did you get home?

JoeNYy said...

I got home at 2:15, I have the last period of the day... and I spent my whole lunch period doing HW too

JoeNYy said...

alright just revised that math. 1:45 doin HW, haha

Liam Gallagher said...

Oh, I get home aroung 2:30. School ends at 2:09.

Liam Gallagher said...

lol

JoeNYy said...

yeah my last period ends at 1:50--- it takes me a good 20, 25 minutes to walk home though

Bruce Beckett said...

A lot of people (on other blogs) think we have no right to complain about Joe Girardi's lineups as we're 40 games over .500. I disagree. As fans, we want the best for our team each and every day. Therefore, we don't like to see a team packed with bench players taking on one of the AL's best. Despite our fantastic year, JG has undoubtedly "dumped" one or two games in the last month. This looks like another one. It appears the only Angel being rested is Vlad...and they have one more game to play than us.

Liam Gallagher said...

You walk home? I have to take the bus.

JoeNYy said...

bruce, i agree
And yeah, liam--- I walk home, there are no people to pick me up and no buses for sophomores

Greg Cohen said...

"A lot of people (on other blogs) think we have no right to complain about Joe Girardi's lineups as we're 40 games over .500."

That's utterly ridiculous Bruce. These other people are too focused on their rose colored Yankees glasses. This team is 5-6 over their last 11 and it's because of these lineups. This division would already be wrapped up if they were putting their A lineup out there everyday.

Liam Gallagher said...

Like Jack.

Liam Gallagher said...

Thats too bad Joey.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow Hairston got on base!

Has Hell frozen over too?

JoeNYy said...

ABSOLUTELY
if Girardi had played Jeter, Damon, Tex, A-Rod, Matsui, Posada, Cano, Swisher, and Cabrera/Gardner the past 10 games, we'd have the division, I wouldn't doubt that at all Greg.

Liam Gallagher said...

"Has Hell frozen over too?"

What does that mean?

JoeNYy said...

Greg, I think pigs are flying, and Liam were you talking to me when you said Joey?

JoeNYy said...

It means that Hairston never gets a hit

Liam Gallagher said...

Yes.

crossfire said...

See, Joe was right. Hairston was due!

Liam Gallagher said...

Oh.

JoeNYy said...

Oh, Liam, I was like huh? Cause no one EVER calls me Joey, lol

Greg Cohen said...

It's a saying, like something unlikely (like Hairston getting on base) will happen when hell freezes over.

Hell is on fire, so it won't freeze over. Get it?

Liam Gallagher said...

I'm gonna go and do my homework.

JoeNYy said...

I got it---- from the beginning lol
It's raining cats and dogs here on LI

Liam Gallagher said...

Yes I do Greg. BYE!

Greg Cohen said...

lol maybe I did jinx it, CF.

JoeNYy said...

see ya Liam

JoeNYy said...

Greg, I might be back later, idk
I've got some stuff to do
GO YANKEES

Greg Cohen said...

Alright later guys.

Bruce Beckett said...

Dead right, Greg. And when you've clinched the division, you can rest as many players you want, as many nights as you want. Who's to say we won't need to win or two in our final series in Tampa to seal the division and home-field advantage. If that is the case, what kind of lineup will Girardi field then?

crossfire said...

Heading home. Should be back on later.

Hey Greg, can you jinx Kazmir now too?

Greg Cohen said...

Sure, Kazmir is definitely going to pitch a no-hitter. lol

JP said...

What up Greg, yeah Im watching, probably pulling another all nighter again. idk why im taking law classes, its becoming my life.

Greg Cohen said...

Are you going to sleep at all?

JP said...

probavly not till tomorrow night.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow. Good luck.

JP said...

I think the longest I ever been up was 84 hours, this is probably going to push that mark...unless sleep decided to sucker punch me in the face.

Greg Cohen said...

84 hours? How the hell did you pull that off and why?

Greg Cohen said...

How do you not have Molina bunt there? Again, what is Girardi doing?

Anonymous said...

More complacent managing by Girardi. Gardner leads off and doesn't move. Stupid baseball.

JP said...

I was in LA last summer for a week. We went to a party at UCLA, it lasted like a day and a half, no one slept, mad beer, mad booze...other things too..so those helped keep you awake.

Then for the last half of the second day we chilled at the hotel, smoked some stuff, just had a good time. Went to a club later that night, stayed until the sun came up before we left, went back, partied more at the hotel.

Then the last day we did a bus tour, that lasted a good part, then when we got back to the hotel we just chilled bc we were afraid we wouldn't wake for the flight back.

All in all, a hell of an experience.

JP said...

That was easy to do b/c it was fun, these all nighters are of a different beast.

Greg Cohen said...

Oh, that's cool, at least you were having a good time.

Bruce Beckett said...

Based on what the evidence so far, I can't actually see the Yankees scoring today unless someone hits a solo homer. Gardner had to steal or Molina had to bunt, yet they did neither. Hope I'm wrong.

Greg Cohen said...

Someone like Tex or Matsui has to run into one for the Yanks to score today. I can't see this lineup sustaining a rally.

JP said...

Greg I have a non-baseball related question for you. I was listening to TMKS on espn on my way back from campus, they were talking about the Nets moving to Brooklyn, how do you feel about that? I think it would be great to have a team other then the Knicks to pull for.

JP said...

Tex will Texicute the Angels.

Greg Cohen said...

I like the idea a lot, and I say that as a Knicks fan. Brooklyn has always loved their sports and they deserve a pro team.

As for rooting for them, since the Knicks have been so embarrassing over the last few years they would certainly attract a ton of fans.

It would also make the Knicks-Nets rivalry that much more interesting.

Greg Cohen said...

lol @ Texicute.

JP said...

You have no heard of that? Bald Vinny came up with that one, its on one of the creature shirts, i'll grab a link.

JP said...

http://www.gravitygraffix.com/teixecutioner.html

Greg Cohen said...

hahahaha nice, I may have to pick that one up next time I go to the stadium.

JP said...

Its one of my favorites. I have a few anti-youk shirts that read "Fack Youk" "Youk Suck" and "F Youk"

Anonymous said...

Greg when I read the title of the blog I see Matsui in the 03 ALCS sliding across home then jumping in the air after the slide, that would be a sick graphic for the top.

Greg Cohen said...

That should be an E5. Terrible coaching at third, especially with one out.

Greg Cohen said...

Not a bad idea Anon. If I update the logo that will be one of the pics I use.

Greg Cohen said...

Atta boy Robbie! 2-0 Yanks!

That's twice as many runs as I thought they'd score today.

Anonymous said...

Woo hoo Melky!

Greg Cohen said...

3-0 Yanks on Melky Cabrera's RBI double. Three times as many runs.

Greg Cohen said...

I should say three more. Three times more would mean I thought they'd score one. Stupid math.

Bruce Beckett said...

Robbie Cano don't ya know! Just goes to show that I know absolutely nothing about this game so I'll shut up for the rest of the afternoon. Go Yanks!!!

Greg Cohen said...

Not true Bruce. Just because something does or doesn't work out doesn't mean it was the right or wrong move. The managers job is to put his team in the best position to win, and I still don't think this lineup did that. I'm glad it's working, but my opinion is unchanged.

Bruce Beckett said...

Thank you for making me feel less foolish. The bottom line is that we all (well, apart from the odd anon) want to see the Yankees win.

JP said...

I go away for 15 minutes and miss all the fun.

Mario said...

AJ looking good today, he seems to pitch to the extremes, he's either really nasty, with pinpoint control & overpowering hitters, or he is "wild thing" ( ricky vaughn ) major league.. there's almost no happy medium with him.... thank god today is NASTY

Forrest Gump. said...

AJ Burnett is like openning up a box of chocolates, you never know what your gunna get

JP said...

Your right on that Mario, the guy bi-polar when it come to pitching.

JP said...

oh no, the lack of sleep is starting to affect my typing skills, i type like a foreigner when I'm tired. don't mean to be mean just making a point.

Mario said...

you have to figure last offseason was a blessing in disguise, with everyone getting extra time off to heal, relax, & train better for this season. you have to figure it has helped DEREK have almost a career year all around, SB, hitting, fielding, etc....

Greg Cohen said...

I agree Mario.

Mario said...

& fuel those to get back to the playoffs who only care about the right things, "WINNING"

JP said...

anyone have that image of Matui? I've been looking for it, been looking for a reason to mess with photoshop

Here's a small version http://thm-a01.yimg.com/image/2d3d8474ef4b0d8c

... I'll look for more.

?

Brian Danuff said...

3-0 Yanks. What's up guys?

JP said...

i cant find anything larger then what u provided.

Greg Cohen said...

3-0 Yankees.

Greg Cohen said...

What's up YB?

Brian Danuff said...

Nothing. Got only a little bit of homework, so.

Nice to see Burnett pitching well and the lineup actually doing okay.

Brian Danuff said...

And I think I jinxed it. Crap.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, Burnett minimized the damage, HOLY SHIT.

Brian Danuff said...

yeah.

Greg Cohen said...

Hey people just wanted to give you a heads up on something... I stupidly didn't realize the entire game summary from last night wasn't showing up. It's fixed if anyone is interested.

Greg Cohen said...

A good right fielder makes that play. Terrible pitch though.

Greg Cohen said...

Does Girardi know Marte is a switch-hitter? WTF?

Brian Danuff said...

Wait, I just turned back on my TV, what happened to Hairston?

Greg Cohen said...

Looked like something with his wrist.

Brian Danuff said...

Oh.

Greg Cohen said...

The problems of this lineup are starting to show themselves. 3 runs is fine, but when you put that up in one inning and then go to sleep you allow the other team to come back, which is exactly what's happening.

JoeNYy said...

OMFG
Girardi puts in Pena instead of A-Rod or Hinske.... does he realize that 1 1/2 is enough time off for a pro athelete???

uhhh just had 2 say that... I'm MAKING DINNER TONITE! lol wish me luck
meatballs, gravy, pasta... the whole 9 yards
hahahahhah

Bruce Beckett said...

Yes, it certainly has the feeling of an Angels comeback win, especially when Girardi brings in Pena for Hairston with one on and one out. Is it really going to hurt to bring A-Rod in there? You would if you really wanted to win this game.

Greg Cohen said...

Nice Joe, and seeing as how you called it gravy and not sauce that shows me you're a real Italian. My mom is Italian so I know.

Robert said...

Marte can not stay in the game. What are they thinking. He is only good for 1 or 2 batters.

Anonymous said...

Everyone needs to relax a little hit they're still winning the game and won last night. I'm actually happy with the way they've played in Anaheim up to this point. Look at the lineup out there today Greg, and they're actually winning! The only thing I took from last nights game was their ability to win in the face of adversity.

Greg Cohen said...

Oh I agree Anon, with this lineup I'm shocked they're winning. Burnett pitched great.

JoeNYy said...

Greg, I'd love to call myself Italian, but I'm like 85% Irish and then the rest is German, ENglish, and Italian--- but thanks haha. I take that as a compliment, seriously.

I'm Italian at heart...
Favorite Movie: Godfather
Favorite Food: Lasagna
I've got a LI/Brooklyn/Queens accent, so I sound sorta like those guys on the Dominoes commercial... "Brooklyn! no, Philly!" lol
im just ramblin on now... but seriously, thanks

Greg Cohen said...

If you're not Italian how'd you know to call it gravy?

JoeNYy said...

I'm just that good man...
honestly, idk- I've just called it that my whole life. My dad's the cook in the house, and he's more Italian than my mom... so I guess from there?

but gravy just sounds right- i mean, brown sauce??? wtf is that? lol

Greg Cohen said...

Oh wait a minute... I thought you were talking about a tomato sauce. Which can be called red sauce, but I've always been told gravy is the proper way to say it.

Brian Danuff said...

Come on Coke, throw a booger ball, like in Everyone's Hero.

Bruce Beckett said...

And now we have to put up with Abletoblow it pitching...this is a joke.

JoeNYy said...

oh, well- i guess im not really italian... but I do call red sauce/tomato sauce gravy sometimes too, no joke.. awh man!...
I'M SO DISAPPOINTED!!!! :'(
lol

Brian Danuff said...

Don't let LA tie it up, please!

Hey gang-

WTF? Why in the hell is Kennedy making his first appearance of the season against the Angles in a 3-2 game?

Brian Danuff said...

yes you did Greg.

97th win here we come!!!

Brian Danuff said...

Well he got out of it Scott, so I guess it paid off. Now on to Mo in the 9th.

It's just part of the genius that is Joe Girardi. At least it didn't cost them.

Liam Gallagher said...

That was a nice pitch.

Brian Danuff said...

It was.

Scott_in_Sacramento said...

Yeah he got out of but why in the hell would you put the guy in that situation?

Girardi truly amazes me sometimes.

I was worried too Scott. And you're right, if I'm Joe I'm bringing in Mo or anybody besides Kennedy.

A-Rod is going to pich hit for Pena.

Brian Danuff said...

I hope the Dodgers or Cardinals clinch tonight. I want to see the lockeroom tees and caps. Then I'll imagine them with Yankee colors and stuff.

Brian Danuff said...

Alright, on to the 9th, bring on the Sandman!!

Liam Gallagher said...

Si senor.

At this point I am thinking I should fly to NY and see if I can get into a game. It wouldn't be any stranger than some of the other moves Girardi has made.

Brian Danuff said...

lol. I live in New York and I'm hoping to go to one of the games this week.

Or, I could always settle for an ALDS/ALCS/World Series game.

YB, I meant see if I can pitch in a game...

I've got a wicked 62 MPH fastball. Hell, I'd do it for free, just give me a couple of hot dogs, and I'm a happy guy.
