I never thought I'd be this happy to see the Yankees three games over .500, but I am. The Yankees were able to get there with an 8-4 victory over the Astros tonight in Houston. This is the first time all season that the Yankees are three games over .500.
Early on it didn't look like it was going to be the Yankees night because the Astros jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Carlos Lee blasted a 3-run homer of Yanks' starter Mike Mussina. But Mussina settled down and ended up pitched a pretty darn good game. The three runs would be all Moose would allow in six innings of work tonight. He once also had great control, walking none and striking out 4. The win was Mussina's 10th of the season and 260th of his career.
Ross Ohlendorf came in to pitch the 7th and allowed 1 run on 2 hits.
Apparently Kyle Farnsworth's save last night was enough to get himself back on good terms with Joe Girardi (Damn it Girardi!) because he was back in the setup role tonight, and somehow pitched a scoreless 8th. He did walk the leadoff man on five pitches, so I wouldn't call it a stellar outing, but he did do the job. I'm hoping the only reason Jose Veras wasn't in the game was because he pitched two innings yesterday.
The Yankees extended their lead to 8-4 in the top of the 9th so being that it wasn't a save situation Girardi called on Edwar Ramirez to finish the game, and he also did the job. He did allow a hit, but also struck out two in a scoreless inning of work.

ASTROS PITCHING
Down 3-0 the Yanks immediately got two runs back in the top of the 2nd. First Alex Rodriguez led off the inning with a solo HR, his 11th of the season. Jason Giambi and Melky Cabrera both followed with doubles, and the Astros lead was cut to one.
The Yanks scored 3 more in the top of the 3rd to take a 5-3 lead. One of the runs came in on a bases loaded walk to Melky Cabrera, and then Jose Molina drove in two with a line drive single to left.
Cabrera led off the 8th with a single, Molina bunted him over to 2nd, and Robinson Cano, who was pinch-hitting for Alberto Gonzalez, chopped a single up the middle to give the Yanks a 6-4 lead.
They added two more insurance runs in the top of the 9th on a 2-run double by Wilson Betemit.
