From Sean Quinn:
They say Babe Ruth built Yankee Stadium. Years from now, they might say Alex Rodriguez used a chunk of his $275 million and hired someone to build the new Yankee Stadium.
Last night’s All-Star game was not just a farewell to Yankee Stadium, it was a farewell to any good left in the Evil Empire.
A year from now, teams visiting the Bronx will no longer be playing the storied tradition of the Yankees, they’ll just be playing a team called the Yankees. And that’s not necessarily a good thing.
“What are they without Yankee Stadium? They aren’t really the Yankees, are they?” asked Texas slugger Josh Hamilton, who dreamt about hitting homers at Yankee Stadium, then shelled out 28 bombs in the first round of Monday night’s Home Run Derby. “All that tradition goes away. That’s why this week is so special.”
A number of All-Stars this week said it’d be impossible for the new stadium to embody all the spirit of the current Yankee Stadium.
“You aren’t just playing the Yankees when you come here, you’re playing against the Yankees and their past legends,” (Chipper) Jones said. “It’ll be weird [next season].”
Even Yankees manager Joe Girardi thinks so. ... “Yogi [Berra] walked down the same tunnel,” Girardi said. “It’s sad to see it go.”
“The Evil Empire gets even more evil,” said Boston’s Jonathan Papelbon. “They are just another team in another stadium.”I hate Jonathan Papelbon, a lot, but this is one time I can agree with him. he only thing I can never agree with is that "they are just another team," they're not, they're the New York Yankees, and they're the greatest team in American sports, but it is true that they will never be the same without Yankee Stadium. I don't care about the renovations, it's still the same building on the same plot of land, and that's what matters.
“You can hate them, it’s harder to hate Yankee Stadium,” he said. “All that good that rests in that stadium is gone.
They won’t be the same team ever again.”
The closer we get to the close of the greatest Stadium in the World, the more upset I have become. The idea that we're losing such a great place for a few sight lines and a bunch of luxury boxes really bothers me.
The new stadium will be very nice, but it will never be the same.

I dont think the stadium is the only reason why we won all those championships. Its the players that play the game at that specific time. We will have the same chance of winning in the new building as we do in this building. Teams have had no problem coming in here and winning. Some people and players make it seem like its the end for the Yankees, that they will never win again. Not true, if we have a great team next year, we'll win with or without the ghosts and history of the present stadium.
I understand that its sad to see the stadium go and I wish we could stay there. -We will still be the Yankees, the most hated team in the world. If this makes us just another team, good! I dont think it does, but if it does so be it, just win!
I said I don't think this make the Yanks "just another team," nothing could do that.
I just think we're losing something very special for no reason besides greed, and that sucks.
I also don't think the Yankees will stop being a successful team, but it's going to be different playing in another building.
But you also have to remember that opposing players are usually in awe of Yankee Stadium, and that will be no more.
o, i was talking about some of the comments of the players and other people i know, not you greg. lol
Oh OK, cool. Just wanted to make sure you knew where I stand.
You can not keep a quality team on the field when you can't afford to pay the players salaries (http://bronxstop.blogspot.com/2008/07/levine-trost-yankees-will-lose-money-in.html).
Between revenue sharing and luxury tax the Yankees will again LOSE money this year.
I don't care what business you are in, if you are losing money, you are going to do whatever you can to maximize your profits so you can continue to do that business. I don't think the new stadium was born out of greed, but rather necessity.
It sucks that baseball has to be a business, trust me I know, but it is and so you have to find a way to make money or you will wind up like the Indians (unable to keep their "stars").
If it means a few luxury boxes I will probably never get to see the inside of and a steakhouse and a martini bar for the Yankees to field a quality team and hang on to the marquee players like Derek Jeter, A-Rod, Mo and so many others...then so be it. I mean could you imagine losing Derek Jeter when he came up for FA because the Yankees couldn't afford to pay his contract???
At least we know that we as Yankee fans will start every season with a legitimate shot at winning the World Series.
How many fans of other teams can say that???
Not one.
I understand what you're saying Mark, but the Cubs and Red Sox have found a way. And the Red Sox have been able to put a quality team on the field for much of the last decade. Another thing is the Yankees don't need a $200 Million payroll. They've never even won a ring with a payroll over $100 million.
I was curious so I did a few google searches...check out this article (http://www.forbes.com/2008/04/16/baseball-team-values-biz-sports-baseball08-cx_mo_kb_0416baseballintro.html)
More or less you are right. The Yankees are not hurting for cash.
I don't know if they are building the Stadium for greed or not.
Of course I hope not but who knows....
I think in time people will learn to love the new one. Everyone say's the ghosts don't travel but how do we know? If I were the ghost of Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, or any other Yankee great, I would be making the 2 block hike over for some nicer haunting grounds.
Great Blog still, Greg. Keep it rollin!!! Go Yanks!!!
People will most certainly love the new stadium, I totally agree. And yes if I were a ghost I'd make that hike as well. But I just believe that this is an unnecessary move, that's all. Hopefully the new stadium is as good as they're hyping it up to be.
I was watching that Yankee Stadium special last night on ESPN and I think Bernie Williams put it best when he said that a part of him was going to die with The Stadium and that's how I feel. I saw my first game there, my father saw his first game there. It's literally my favorite place on Earth.
Anyway thanks for the compliment and I will definitely keep it rollin.
