According to a National League source, Diamondback fans might not want to get too excited about the possibility of landing Mark Teixeira. This source believes the Yankees, Rays and Angels are more likely to land the switch-hitting first baseman before Thursday's Trade Deadline.I think Teixeira is exactly the type of player they need. Whether they trade for him now, or sign him in the offseason, they have to have him in Pinstripes by '09. He's a switch-hitting, Gold Glove first baseman that is currently hitting .283 with 20 HR, 78 RBI, and a .902 OPS. He's only made two errors in the field, and leads the league with a .946 zone rating. And he's only 28 years old. He could be the first baseman for the next 5-7 years.
As mentioned earlier, Braves general manager Frank Wren spoke to approximately six teams on Monday about Teixeira. Because they would certainly have the funds to re-sign him on the free agent market, the Yankees might be willing to part with a higher caliber of talent.
If the Yankees traded for him, they would be stacked, here's how their lineup would look:

I just wonder what he would cost, and would it be worth it when they can just wait and sign him in the off season?
You have to assume it would cost several top prospects. Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Jesus Montero and Austin Jackson are players the Braves would certainly ask for in return; two, three, maybe all four of them. Melky Cabrera's and Robinson Cano's are other names that would certainly come up as well.
The thing is that he would make this year's team so much better that it may be worth it to give up a prospect or two to get him now.
I'm interested to see how this plays out.
I have two questions for you fans:

I like Texiera a lot, but I do NOT like the idea of giving away so much for a first baseman. If we were talking about a catcher - different story. I am ok with Giambi for now, and then hopefully at a cheaper rate after this year, and then worrying about first base at a later date. If he's a free agent after the season, a la Sabathia, is the 2008 title run worth THAT MUCH, that you'd give up (as you said) IPK, Hughes, et al, and THEN pay him his Giambi salary?

I wonder what Nady would think about being in a platoon when he has been doing so well this year but other than that, I am all for it. It makes our lineup very deep which will counteract any starting pitching woes.
Counteract any pitching woes? How does THAT work? So adding Texiera will "counteract" games like the one last night when the Yanks give up 13 runs? Having him in the lineup means 14+ runs all of a sudden? I really kinda doubt that.
Think of this as well...
Let's say that the Yankees land Texiera today. Obviously, he would be a constant in the lineup - you are NOT going to give up all of those prospects/young players for a guy to sit on the bench/platoon. So with him at first every night, you will have to sit one of the following players EVERY GAME:
Giambi
Damon
Abreu
Cabrera
Nady
...and then make it TWO players from that list once Godzilla comes back (adding him to said list).
So that said, is it worth the players you'll give up in a trade for Texiera and also having to sit two of those guys every night? Even having to sit ONE of those guys every night, if they were to deal Melky for whoever. It doesn't add up, IMO.
Fred I never said I'd give up that much for him, I was making an assumption that it would cost some of those players.
And I'm not sure if you people are aware of how bad Giambi has been this month, for July he's hitting .189, so I'd have no problem taking away a lot of playing time from him to give a guy like Teixeira at-bats.
I do want him on the Yankees, but it may cost too much and we have so many guys that are starters. Someone would get screwed if they get him, probably Nady. I say they should wait until the offseason. We have to get rid of some of these guys. Giambi, Abreu? maybe one of Damon/ Matsui.
Nady can play against lefties. Why do people care about Xavier Nady's feelings? He's been here for three days. If it bothers him to ride the bench some days, too damn bad.
Even though Matsui says he hopes to be back in two weeks you can't count on that, and it's more likely he will have to have surgery, and Giambi has been awful for a month now, so a few days off for him can't hurt either.
I don't think they should trade for Texiera. Giving up our top prospects for that is not a good idea. Unless he is traded to Boston or another high market team, then he will hit the free agent market and then the Yanks could sign him. And I am willing to take that chance.
There are rumors going around about Teixeira to Boston for Manny. And the Braves would turn around and trade Manny to the DBacks for prospects. Weird rumor, but if the Sox do get Tex, they will most certainly sign him to a long term deal.
That would suck, I really dont want to hate him, but if he goes to Boston I would have to.
Well let me put a few words in this texiera issue. First let me tell you we have a lot of players with big salary that are just sitting down and not doing anything. But we are also losing many of them next year. There are many probables on the trading block. Melky is the first. Why the guy is a big defensive player, one of the best the yankees have seen since Bernie Williams. If we think about it, this is giambi last year as a yankee i doubt the yankees will sign him again. This is also Carl last year as a yankee. This are players that are holding the yankees back. The yankees can afford to part with melky and hey why not throw richie sexson and Ian kennedy in the mix. We need a guy like texiera in the yankees because of his offence. by giving up melky and sexson you are making roster changes that will not affect the yankees because you already have then sitting down at some point anyways. Taking melky out brings Damon in center field and johnny damon is a better offensive player than melky is. By taking sexson out you bring in texiera in and sexson is already sitting down most of the time. By making this changes you end up having Giambi as a DH al the time. Another guy you could put in the trade is johnny damon and have melky batting first.
I agree that Teixeira would look great in a Yankee uniform. I also agree with many here that he would cost too much via trade. So I say, pick him up during offseason as a free agent, and get the bat the Yanks badly need now in the form of one Barry Bonds.

"Matsui, make like Posada and get yourself ready for 2009." "Nady you are in LF when Melky is in line-up, and in CF when Damon plays." "Damon, you are platooning with Melky, sorry. And lots of times you will start the game for your bat and Melky will come in late games for his defense." "Bonds, you play DH every day. For next year, the Yanks should sign Teixeira and Sabathia long-term and let Abreu and Giambi, and probably one or both of Matsui and Damon.
I agree with you but what are the chances of the yankees getting a third do you hear that a third chance on Texiera. If you dont remember they had a chance also in the last offseason to trade him and they did not. And like some say Carl Pavao, Matsui, and Jason giambi are probably gone for next season. So why not pick him up now and negotiate later.
Fred, I didn't mean that it would counteract all our pitching woes, obviously it would not help in a game like last night but in a game that is much closer, like 5-4 or 6-5, he would give us another guy who could change the game entirely in a heartbeat. I would be willing to give up one of our young starters, maybe Melky, Gardner probably would hit just as good as him even though that is not saying much, and a couple lesser prospects. This also means that Sexson will either be gone or stuck on the bench, which is not really a problem with me. I also don't really care how Nady will feel, but it seems a little wrong to platoon a guy who is batting 320. for the year with 14 homers.
Here's the problem as I see it. We just gave a multi year deal to a catcher who's arm may not allow him to catch must longer. He has to play somewhere, he doesn't hit for enough power to only be a DH, which only leaves first base. As much as we all would love to see Tex in NY, we would have a problem over the next few years of what to do with Posada. Can't see it happening. Keep the prospects and sign CC in the offseason.
Texiera is now an Angel, we'll get him in the offseason.
The Angels just got themselves a ring. They are clearly the favorites right now, we damn well know the Yankees are not.
