The Yanks beat the Boston Red Sox in Tampa tonight by the score of 7-1. A.J. Burnett started for the Yankees and was sharp. In 5.2 innings pitched he allowed a run on three hits and two walks, and struck out four. He was pitching brilliantly until the sixth when he appeared to tire. He gave up a walk, a couple of hits, and a run, and was taken out of the game.

Jonathan Albaladejo relieved Burnett and retired the only batter he faced.

Mariano Rivera then came in for the seventh and pitched a perfect inning. He's now retired 12 of the 13 batters he's faced so far this spring.

Damaso Marte pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing a walk and a hit, and striking out one.

In 1.1 innings pitched Edwar Ramirez allowed just one hit and struck out two on his way to his first win this spring.

Brett Gardner, and his speed, got the Yankees going with a lead off triple in the bottom of the sixth. He later scored on a Johnny Damon infield single. The infield was in on a grounder to second and Gardner was still able to score. Gardner finished the night 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Damon finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

With the game still tied at one in the 8th and runners on 1st and 2nd, Angel Berroa lined a double over third to give the Yanks a 2-1 lead. Another run scored later in the inning on a catcher's interference call.

Later in the inning Austin Jackson was up with the bases loaded and took a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam to put the game away. Jackson was then reassigned to minor-league camp following the game. He had a very good spring, hitting .333/.385/.667 with 3 HR, 10 RBI, and 2 stolen bases in 23 games.

Eduardo Nunez, who also had a very good spring, was also reassigned, and Juan Miranda was optioned to AAA.

Thats what makes Gardner special. Gardner basically manufactured that run by himself. He legged out a triple. Then the infield was playing in on Damon's grounder and Gardner still scored the run. No other yankee could do that.

I really hope Gardner becomes a good major league hitter. Imagine a future outfield with Gardner and Austin Jackson, with there speed it would be awesome to see how much outfield ground they will cover. No balls would be dropping in.

Yup, I totally agree about Gardner. There are only a small handful of players in the sport, forget about the Yankees, that could score on that play.

I'd love to see an outfield with both AJax and Gardner, and there's a good chance we will.

Also is shows that Joe Girardi is pretty good at evaluating players. Because over the past winter all the media members that cover the yankees were saying how much Girardi loves Gardner.

Gardner plays hard nose ball that would've fit right in on the teams of the 90's. Jackson seems to be developing a flair for the clutch and I don't think this is the last we've seen of him this season.

You're right Danny, he'd fit right in on those teams.
