ESPN's MLB Preseason Power Rankings

ESPN.com just came out with their preseason power rankings, they asked 15 of their leading baseball experts to rank every major league team from 1-30, here are the top ten:

1. Boston Red Sox
2. Tampa Bay Rays
3. New York Yankees
4. Chicago Cubs
5. Philadelphia Phillies
6. New York Mets
7. Los Angeles Angels
8. Los Angeles Dodgers
9. Cleveland Indians
10. Minnesota Twins

For the rest of the rankings go here.

I think those rankings are pretty reasonable. What do you think?

I think they are ok, but I don't think the Rays won't have a season like they had last year.

The Rays where in the WS right? Why would the Sox be ahead of them?

I think the Rays take a step back this year. No more sneaking up on teams. People know they're good.
Also they had alot of come from behind wins last year. Teams usually don't duplicate stuff like that year in and year out.
I still think their lineup is kind of weak.
They got a way with it last year because they won games with pitching and defense.
But their pitching might not be as good this year. Injuries or just bad years could happen.

I gotta be honest, I don't see how, at this moment, anyone can bet against the Yankees. From 1 through 25 it's the best team on paper, and they seem to have a decent team dynamic going on right now.

The Rays can't take everyone by surprise this year like they did last year, and I just can't see their entire pitching staff all having the kinds of successes they had last year. They may not be awful, but the 2nd best team in baseball in 2009? That's a stretch.

As for the Red Sox, if the Yankees have question marks, the Red Sox have as many if not more. Can Lester and Matsuzaka both combine for a 34-9 combined record? That's 25 games over 500, and the Red Sox finished 28 games over 500. So it means that the rest of the Sox pitching staff was only 3 games over .500. Can Matsuzaka and Lester carry the team that well again in 09? That's a tough task.

Not to mention age and/or injury concerns from Penny, Lowell, Ortiz, Lugo, Varitek etc, not to mention a rookie catcher in Kotteras who will catch Wakefield which will be interesting to see how that plays out.

I'm alright with being 3rd.. usually the people who say these things are wrong. our pitching staff is one of the best in the game, rotation is probably the best. our lineup is one of the best. as we saw last night Ransom and Gardner are going to get hits. some people may think of them as automatic outs, they're mistaken.

come playoff time, we are going to be a force to be reckon with. CC, Wang, A.J, Pettitte/Joba.. (possibly Joba in the 8th). I have a sense that if Burnett is healthy, he'll pitch like Beckett does in the playoffs.

Yea I could see the Rays taking a step back too

I also hear alot of people knock the yankees age. The only difference in age with the yankees and red sox is at shortstop and closer. Other than that the yankees are younger or the same age at all the positions and starting pitchers.

Rays second is a joke quite frankly.
Just proves how many people especially so called experts , are simple front runners.

I think it says a lot for the power in the AL East that they would occupy the top three slots in your power rankings. Still, with the health issues of that the Sox have (and I'm a Sox fan?), I'd still slot Tampa in at number one until some of those questions get the answers we'll see in the first week.

ESPN is so biased in favor of the Red Sox that I don't take anything their so-called experts say seriously anymore
