News & Notes

***UPDATE 6:55 p.m.: Apparently all that complaining about the stupid batting practice policy about no fans in the "suites." This is now what the A-Z Guide on Yankees.com says about batting practice:
Remember fans, on game days, arrive early. Yankee Stadium Gates on Babe Ruth Plaza and Gates 2 and 8, open three hours prior to the start of every home game. All fans are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy batting practice and infield workouts from select areas of the Field Level and the Bleachers; specifically, all fans may watch batting practice and infield workouts from Field Level Sections 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 134, 135 and 136 and from all Bleachers Sections. Please note, on certain game days the Yankees may elect not to take batting practice, infield workouts or both. Those fans who take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy batting practice and infield workouts from the Field Level and/or the Bleachers may remain until the players leave the field following the conclusion of the Yankees batting practice or 1 hour and 45 minutes after the Gates open. At that time, all fans will be asked to return their respective seats.
Peter Abraham spoke with a Yankees spokesperson and they confirmed that the rules were changed today. See, even the Yankees know Lonn Trost is a weasel.

- CC Sabathia is 7-3, with a 3.46 ERA in ten starts. At Rogers Centre/SkyDome he's 3-1, with a 2.88 ERA in four starts. Last year he won the only game he started agianst the Jays, in seven innings he allowed a run on six hits, walked two, and struck out nine.

- Brian Tallet has never made a start against the Yankees, but in 20 relief appearances he's 1-0, with a 2.86 ERA. In six relief appearances against the Yankees last season he had a 3.86 ERA.

- Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui return to the lineup after being sidelined for a couple games with injuries.

- Former Yankee Jim Leyritz is in a hospital in Florida after threatening to commit suicide. According to the article from the Sun Sentinel, "Leyritz voluntarily checked himself into the hospital, citing stress as the reason for seeking medical attention."

- NYU graduates are upset with the Yankees because they would not allowed them to sit in the legends suites during yesterday's graduation ceremony. Here's a couple picture from yesterday via subwaychatter.com:

I know some of you probably don't see anything wrong with this, but I think it's ridiculous. Why shouldn't the NYU grads be able to sit in those seats?

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section

the yankees seem as if someone besides the rightful ticket owner touches those seats, it will unclean and tarnished. thats a joke

Crosetti32 said...

The Yankees are just being consistent. Just like the games, no one is sitting there.

JoeNYy said...

its still a joke

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't mind if Lonn Trost was hit by a bus.

Hey guys, guess what? I'm typing from my hotel room in Disney World! I know I said I wouldn't be around while I'm here, but for tonight I will be (up until 6:45; we are having dinner in the Magic Kingdom).

For now, I'll be able to talk to you guys. So let's talk about some baseball! It'll take the dark sky off my mind (it's thundering right now in Florida).

Anonymous said...

Nope, definitely wouldn't mind.

Greg Cohen said...

Nice YB.

It always rains in Florida, but it lasts for like 30 minutes and then it's sunny again.

CC needs to pitch a good game tonight. Like I said in yesterday's game summary, coming home 17-17 is a lot better than 16-18.

Brian Danuff said...

Yep. It doesn't have to be another gem (although we'd all like to see one). Just a 7 inning, 1-2 run outing from Big Slim is still very good.

Brian Danuff said...

Alright see ya. My brother is having a fit to use the laptop. So I'll be a nice big brother and let him use it,

GO YANKEES!!

Greg Cohen said...

Later YB.

The Yankees have clearly embraced the idea of being the "Evil Empire," with more emphasis on the evil.

Greg Cohen said...

It really is looking that way, Anon. I wish it wasn't the case.

Anyone watching/following this Sox game? Ervin Santana is back on the mound for the Angels, Penny is going for the Sox. 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

Anonymous said...

I just hope the Sox lose.

Will said...

LOL!

That is awesome!

Just wait until this gets around, and organizations will pass on hosting events at Yankee Stadium where guests are forced to sit a mile from the event. This will come back to burn the Yankees. Just wait until the new Giants/Jets Stadium is complete, the Yankees will have no clients for leasing the stadium. Idiots.

Pete Abe has an update on the new rules for batting practice.. looks like they finally wised up.

Shields hasn't been good

It was reported that the Yankee had it written in the contract with NYU that the seats would remain empty because of the "streaker" incident last year. That said, they were a few dozen NYC police on hand so it becomes even more of a joke. I mean when I went to my daughter's college graduation I did not want to sit six miles away, nor was it appropriate for the graduates to be so far from the stage.

They really should just fill the place up with water and make it a moat with water fountains to hide the other empty seats.

If I were NYU I re-think next year. If I were any organization thinking of having an event like this at the stadium, I would look else where because I would not want my guests or my customers to be treated like criminals or trash.

For the amount of work these kids needed to do to graduate, then the amount of money it cost to go to this school to be treated this way is shameful. I hope they all remember this when they are successful and the Yankees are begging them to buy Legend suite tickets.

Anonymous said...

Bravo rpb, couldn't agree more.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon,

That's awesome. Great to see that the good guys won this time.

daneptizl said...

Damn, I thought Robbie mighta had something there.

daneptizl said...

At least he hustled for one of the few times in his career.

Greg Cohen said...

True.

Greg Cohen said...

That was close.

Anonymous said...

Why isn't Melky playing? Apparently because Gardner homers and hits a triple he's no longer hitting .230?

Greg Cohen said...

Girardi is sticking with the kid for another game, nothing wrong with that.

Anonymous said...

Red Sox just lost!

Greg Cohen said...

Yep, just saw it on MLB.com. Nice.

Anonymous said...

Except for the fact that this team is trying to get to .500 and he's hitting 100 points lower?

Greg Cohen said...

I don't agree. I like that he's rewarding Gardner for the good game yesterday. If he doesn't hit today, start Melky tomorrow.

daneptizl said...

Maybe I'm being too cyncial, but look at that first strike that was called on Napoli in the 12th... wtf...

Greg Cohen said...

I said it that other day, the umpires have been terrible for everyone. It's been like this for years.

Anonymous said...

0 for 2 so far Greg, keep sticking with the kid that swings like a girl.

Anonymous said...

But seriously, I could understand rewarding Gardner for a good game because that's the right thing to do. But at least sit Swisher and start Melky in right, he has one of the hott est bats right now and Swish is lost.

Greg Cohen said...

I have absolutely no problem with him starting. You're making a big deal out of nothing.

Greg Cohen said...

Fine, I'd have no problem with that.

Anonymous said...

Droppin' like flies.

bob said...

I graduated NYU last year, and was fortunate enough to attend commencement at the old Stadium. I was a few rows back from the field, and it was a truly magical experience(especially when the student speaker was boo'd after donning a Sox cap.)

I guess it's different, in terms of security, when you have a sitting Secretary of State there, but after last year's streaker(go Will!) made his appearance, they beefed up the number of security guards lining the field immediately. Every few feet there was a security guy. I don't see why they couldn't have done that this time around.

These seats are becoming such a terrible stigma for the Yankees, they should rip them out and put in normal-sized seats. If people want big, cushy seats, they can watch the game from their recliner at home.

Greg Cohen said...

They gotta remove that moat. It looks terrible. Next year they have to make that a walk way like it was at the old stadium.

bob said...

I totally agree. Anyone else have the feeling a renovation is only a few years away?

Anonymous said...

off-season.

Anonymous said...

Should have just renovated the old place.

Greg Cohen said...

It happened to US Cellular in Chicago, and I think it will happen here, regardless of what Trost says to the media.

Anonymous said...

FUCKKKKK

Greg Cohen said...

What a tag by Cervelli.

Anonymous said...

Cy Tallet dominating the Yanks.

Anonymous said...

3 hits? Should have sat Jeter and Matsui another night. Useless.

Greg Cohen said...

Nice play by Jeter. Now maybe they can stop making Tallet look good.

Anonymous said...

TIE GAME!!

Anonymous said...

COME ON, THAT WAS A PERFECT TIME FOR A BUNT. WHAT IS GIRARDI THINKING?!?!?!?!?

Greg Cohen said...

I agree.

Greg Cohen said...

To me it seems like Girardi is always waiting for a three-run homer.

bob said...

"3 hits? Should have sat Jeter and Matsui another night. Useless."

Yeah, I'm so sick of Jeter getting game-tying RBI hits late in the game.

Anonymous said...

Watching A-Rod and Teixeira ruin rallies all year is going to be great.

Anonymous said...

Hey, look A-Rod's back!

Anonymous said...

Hey, other anonymous, if they had bunted with Damon, Teixeira drives in the run with a sac fly.

Greg Cohen said...

People will say, "He's the hottest hitter in the game, he can't bunt!" But I don't think that's any reason to avoid the bunt. You get the runners over, take the lead on an out. Too many times in the last two years innings have gone exactly like that one just did and the Yanks get nothing.

bob said...

Brett has a gun.

Greg Cohen said...

If CC can get out of this it will be huge.

rpb said...

speed kills way to go Gardner (great throw too)

Each make the othe hustle i have no problem with either gardner or Melky pushing each other until one or both are good jouneyman grinders

Anonymous said...

COME ON, 0-2, STRIKE HIM OUT!!!11!!1!

Anonymous said...

YES!!!!111!!11!!! GOT HIM11!1!!!1

Anonymous said...

When the Yankees lose this game it's gonna be because they're 2-3-4 couldn't get the job done with 2 on and no out.

Greg Cohen said...

If they lose, yes, that will be the reason.

Greg Cohen said...

That's a terrible walk. Awful.

bob said...

Call me crazy, but I'd go to the pen right now.

Greg Cohen said...

Who would u go to?

bob said...

I gladly retract my statement.

Greg Cohen said...

hahahahha,

Great job by CC to get out of that.

bob said...

"3 hits? Should have sat Jeter and Matsui another night. Useless."

Greg Cohen said...

Hahahahahaha.... Big hit by Hideki. Big.

bob said...

not to rub it in or anything...

Anonymous said...

As the anonymous poster who made that statement you keep rubbing in (and you have every right to) I apologize. If there's ever a time I like to put my foot in my mouth it's when the Yankees prove me wrong.

Greg Cohen said...

Don't worry anon, it happens to me all the time.

bob said...

Okay, here is where I would go to the pen. Whoever is rested.

Greg Cohen said...

With this pen it's so tough. Especially when CC has another 20 pitches in the tank.

daneptizl said...

Veras...

Greg Cohen said...

Wells just missed that.

daneptizl said...

I wonder if they're going to back off of CC much when the pen becomes more dependable.

Greg Cohen said...

Not sure. This is why they got him. The guy is a horse.

bob said...

btw, I think Singleton is a solid play-by-play guy.

Greg Cohen said...

Yup, I enjoy listening to him more than Kay.

Greg Cohen said...

YES!

Anonymous said...

I don't think CC would allow them to back off.

daneptizl said...

Mariano is teh Toast!

Anonymous said...

Good game.

Greg Cohen said...

Very nice win. Now they have ten games at home. Gotta take care of business.

Anonymous said...

Great road trip. Visited two al east teams and won both series. Thats all the yankees need to do just keep winning series.

Though hitting with RISP is still pathetic. The yankees could of put the game away in the 1st. Also the 7th was bad no out runners on 1st and second with your 2,3 and 4 hitters coming up and they could not drive in a run.

Bottom of the order making it happen again tonight. Gardner and Cervilli might not be the best hitters but they make some big plays.

Danny said...

Cervilli is looking like maybe he should have a permanent role on the team. I still don't like the fact that Girardi sits back and waits for the big hit instead of forcing the team to create runs.

crossfire said...

Great game. The top of the order besides Damon really need to heat up but it's nice to see the bottom of the order do well. Plus Jeter and Matsui came back from injury and delivered. Another great game for CC.

Great catch on the policy change Greg. It was an idiotic thing to do in the first place and I'm glad they rectified it.

Sounds like Trost got "rectified" by by the Yanks for being an ass.

Mario said...

Injuries, bad pitching, no offense from the people paid for it(AROD & TEX), & yet we're @ .500 17-17...if the pitching and/or offense could just get going, we could make up some ground... and get rolling some...

rpb said...

Back to the item regarding fans and batting practice - the sections listed are not anywhere near the infield or the dugouts or in the "moat". So Trost is still telling the average fan to take a hike and we're not welcomed in his "house".

The sections are basically from each bullpen to a few sections down from the foul poles (top of "moat" to bullpen on each side). The outfield areas. You can catch BP HRs and yell down to players in the outfield but its not the up close experience you get around the dugouts, near the infield, and home plate.

While this is a victory, its just Trost getting the press off his back. We can't let that happen! We have to keep the pressure on the Yankee organization to tear down the wall and get away from the class distinction that has marked this stadium in so many ways (we still want hot water in the restroom in the upper deck).

Yes, this is a small victory but the fight is still very much on to get our stadium back!

Raven King said...

Why shouldn't the NYU grads be able to sit in those seats?
Because "the legends suites" means "ugly empty front-row seats specially reserved for the super rich".
