News & Notes

- Joba Chamberlain has never started against the Rays, but he has not allowed a run against them in seven relief appearances. In 8.1 innings he's allowed 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 7.

- In six appearances (five starts) Matt Garza is 1-2, with a 4.11 ERA against the Yankees. In The Bronx he's 0-1, with a 6.17 ERA in three games (two starts). He faced the Bombers once this season down in Tampa and did not get a decision. In 7 innings he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 9.

- With yesterday's loss combined with the Red Sox 8-1 win over the Rangers the Yankees are now a half game behind Boston for first place in the division.

Injury Updates From Peter Abraham:

- Brian Bruney threw two 15-pitch simulated innings today and felt fine.
He could throw another simulated game, then some live BP and then a go to the minors for a rehab game or two.
He also said that because the Yankees want to be certain he's really OK this time when they bring him back it could be another 8-10 days until they activate him.

- Jose Molina is doing baseball activities and told Peter that he thinks he's 7-10 days away.
“It’s not nearly as bad as last time,” he said. “But I need to be able to run.”
Jose, since when have you been able to run?

- Xavier Nady threw from 90 feet yesterday down in Tampa.

- Damaso Marte will throw a bullpen session in Tampa today.

UPDATE 2:11 p.m.: Here's some quotes from Bruney about today's BP session via Marc Carig:
"I think we're definitely going in the right direction," said Bruney, who this season has fibbed about his achy elbow. "I feel good."
...

"I'm excited about it," Bruney said. "I think the training staff and coaches are excited about it. At this point, when things are going well, you don't want to rush into it and have a set back. I think it's probably smarter to just go the course, do the program, and see how that turns out."
...

"I don't feel my arm strength's very far off," he said. "Arm strength is different. Just cause you're strong doesn't mean you can throw. If that was the case, Hulk Hogan would be a Cy Young candidate. Physically, I felt great. But as far as my strength goes, it's not there, but I don't think that has anything to do with pitching."

How come whenever Jorge is catching Joba he's always nibbling? It's the same thing year after year with Posada, he never seems to trust his pitchers to throw the ball in the zone.

Greg Cohen said...

Interesting point, anon. I know that it happens more with younger pitchers like Hughes and Joba so it could just be them. Younger pitchers tend to be a little more bat shy than a guy who has been around for 10 years. Mussina who was a veteran, used to nibble all the time, but I think that was more his fault.

A great day for baseball and a great day for a win.

Greg Cohen said...

Very true, Liam.

Greg Cohen said...

Texas up 1-0 on Boston after the top of the first.

Schruender said...

The Yankees probably should think about giving Damon a day off against Garza the next time they face him. He just can't get to him.

Liam Gallagher said...

NICE!!

Liam Gallagher said...

I agree Schruender.

Mario said...

Can we win a game & no one hit a HR, thats what i want to see the most....

Greg Cohen said...

Nice, Swisher makes me eat crow. Awesome!

Mario said...

so much for that, have we had a game where there was NO homeruns hit at the new band box...

Anonymous said...

theyve won and gone homerless away

Greg Cohen said...

That's true.

.... Boston down 2-0 after one and a half.

Also, does anyone else realize how good Joba could be if he threw more changeups? That pitch is surprisingly good.

Yankees went 18 games without an error. Then Posada returned. Ugh.

Greg Cohen said...

lol, he's only made two since the streak was broken. Damon has one, A-Rod has one, Cevelli has a couple.

Anonymous said...

$20 m a year and he can't bunt and all he does is hit perfect DP balls. Another old man loser. Hey Cashman make sure you give him $50m extension in the offseason. That's something you would do.

Posada blows thats why. He's a terrible catcher.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, Jeter is the best bunter on the team, and that's the first time he hasn't gotten one down when he was supposed to in a very long time. Relax.

Anonymous said...

fucking shit

Greg Cohen said...

How long is Joe going to let Joba go? He has no fastball, take him out while they're still in the game.

daneptizl said...

And to think I was disappointed that we didn't get D-Mat.

Greg Cohen said...

He's really be awful this year. High 7 ERA.

The Yanks need a comback here.

daneptizl said...

Joe Nelson is a prime candidate to get wrecked... but we'll see

Greg Cohen said...

A-Rod should have destroyed that pitch.

daneptizl said...

Joe Nelson pitching well against us is a shame.

Anonymous said...

Not good when you start off 2-10 against your two division rivals.

Greg Cohen said...

I agree with both of you.

daneptizl said...

I wonder what the chance of Crawford becoming a FA is...

Greg Cohen said...

It's a club option for 2010 so I'd assume the Rays are going to pick it up. He'd be stupid to sign an extension with them, though. He'll make more when he hits the market in 2011.

daneptizl said...

10 mill for the Rays is a lot, though.

Greg Cohen said...

But it's only 1.50 MM more than they're giving him this year, plus he's a huge part of why they're good. They'd be foolish to let him walk.

wnylibrarian said...

Someone needs to tell Kay that I could care less about statistics regarding Joba. Dude is a big dog that belongs in the bullpen. First thing that goes is accuracy. He lost the plate in that 6th. He keeps trying to "pitch." He is a two-inning dominate pitcher. No other team would be screwing around like the Yankees are. Put him in the darn pen where he belongs! I've just about had enough of the stupid justifications to the contrary!

Anonymous said...

The Yankees are starting to look exactly like they did BEFORE Posada was injured. Its fuckign hilarious. Its taken about 10 games and they look identical. Way to go Cashman and Girardi. You two couldn't manage or make good decisions if you're life depended on it.

And, I dont care if Jeter is the best bunter he FAILED at doing something simple. And, anyone making $20m should be able to bunt at will. The only thing Jeter is good at is hitting a PERFECT DP ball. That's it.

Greg Cohen said...

I'm gonna say this now, unless the Yankees are ahead I want to see Aceves in the ninth.

daneptizl said...

Please, Alex...

Greg Cohen said...

Just hit a single up the middle and keep the line moving. That's all.

daneptizl said...

wnylivraria.... wtf are you talking about? So the Twins were wrong with returning Santana to a starter, the Dodgers were wrong in returning Billingsley to a starter, and the Rays were wrong with returning Price to a starter?

daneptizl said...

Please, Robbie...

Greg Cohen said...

Big at-bat for Cano here.

daneptizl said...

It's time for Garbage Posada again...

Greg Cohen said...

GET THE BALL IN THE AIR!

Anonymous said...

Lets all watch Posada GIDP. Its perfect timing for it.

daneptizl said...

Come on, Dekster.

Greg Cohen said...

Shades of the WBC for Aybar. That was similar to the play that ended the Netherlands game.

Anonymous said...

i know here comes the posada talk

Greg Cohen said...

Two almost DPs and the Yanks lead 4-3... Gotta love baseball.

Anonymous said...

See? Absolutely perfect ball for a DP except for the error. POSADA IS A FUCKING LOSER WITH A CAPITAL L. This team will NEVER win with him. And, anyone that sticks up for him is blind, deaf and dumb.

Anonymous said...

ya i know, no other sport can your oppostion mess up more, causing you to do good

Greg Cohen said...

Yea that's part of it.

wnylibrarian said...

That's our Posada! Pitcher can't throw strikes and he swings into the first pitch to hit into one of his patented Posada inning ending double-play rally killers. Only by the error of the 3rd baseman did this inning continue. Thank Goodness! No thanks to Jorge.

Anonymous said...

Posada deserves to be talked about because he sucks. His play is atrocious and his hitting at key times is some of the worst of all time. ANYONE CAN SEE THAT. Except for biased, prejudiced news mafia educated dolts.

Greg Cohen said...

But shouldn't you just be happy that they have the lead, regardless of how they got it?

Mario said...

I CAN NOT WAIT TO GET RID OF THAT PIZZA FACED FRAUD, HA GODZILLA, MORE LIKE A SALAMANDER...SWINGS AT THE FIRST FUCKING PITCH LOW, YOU'D BETTER HUSTLE DOWN THE LINE YOU CRIPPLED S.O.B.......WHY CAN'T WE BRING UP SHELLEY DUNCAN, TO DH SOME, HE'S CRUSHING THE BALL IN AAA.

Greg Cohen said...

By the way, Posada has been awful against the Sox and Rays (I'll post the stats later) so I'm not defending that. But come on, just be happy they're winning. Isn't that what fans do?

Anonymous said...

Exactly librarian. The pitcher can't throw strikes and POsada swings at the first pitch. HOw many times have you seen him do that? This year alone? God, he is such a loser and anyone that stands up for him is dumb.

Posada is 100% part of the problem just like Mo, Jeter, Matsui, Arod and Damon.

daneptizl said...

wnylibrarian, answer me.

Or did you just create you argument..... for me to poop on?

Greg Cohen said...

Geeez guys, they're WINNING, why is everyone so angry?

Anonymous said...

ok fine, im not neccisarly, sticking up for posada even though i love him but at least he does put it in play, if he strikes out, then the end of the inning comes on matsui's ground out. Part of baseball is taking advantage of the other teams mishaps so by putting the ball in play he was able to accomplish that.

daneptizl said...

Cause people actually prefer Cervelli over Posada, or Shelley over Matsui.

Anonymous said...

NO, greg, what is the matter with you? I think about the future. Posada is a CHOKE ARTIST and STUPID. And, he will do the samethign at a very important time and lose the game because of his stupidity. That's why it bothers me.

Greg Cohen said...

My advice to you is stop thinking about the future, that's the GM's job. You're a fan. Enjoy the lead, and let's home Mo redeems himself and closes the door.

Anonymous said...

You're so dumb Dan its not even funny. You actually applaud Posada's stupidity and failure. YOu're just like the American people. You applaud liars, killers, stealers and rapists while condemn law abiders. APARTHEID. Gnat strainers. Hilarious.

Greg Cohen said...

Here comes the crazy political tangent.. These are always fun.

Anonymous said...

Mo will choke because he isn't good. He is an old man.

Anonymous said...

are you even a yankee fan?

Greg Cohen said...

Who?

Anonymous said...

not you, the guys who just bash mariano cuz he messed up yesterday.

Greg Cohen said...

Oh. No, I don't think he is.

Greg Cohen said...

Good win.

crossfire said...

Mo's cutter was superb today. Great win.

wnylibrarian said...

For daneptizl: Santana is a starter. No one questions the fact. So, by the simple fact that there is even a debate about him in the rotation is reason enough to concede the point that, yeah, he should be closing. This is probably Rivera's final year. You need to start grooming someone at some time. Why not now? A close friend of mine, Dodger fan who hates the Yankees, agrees the point with me. You ask, how can Joba best help this team? Once very 5 days? Or like Rob Dibble: several times per week. The debate is pointless. 6 innings 3 runs is a quality start? How low is our expectations? Ask Nolan Ryan in texas. Joba best helps this team setting up Mo, and eventually taking over for Mo in the future. Quality starters don't grow on trees; neither do quality closers.

ayw said...

i wouldnt be surprised if the next argument that comes up is if the yankees are lucky hitters b/c pitchers make mistakes. If their lucky with the defense today, why arent they lucky with the other team pitching?

crossfire said...

Boston just lost. Yanks are back in first place!

daneptizl said...

I'm not gonna lie... you didn't make too much sense.

Anonymous said...

Garza only went 5 innings put him in the bullpen!

Anonymous said...

Wow Greg I can't believe they beat a "real" team.

Anonymous said...

Texas Rangers just took 2 out of 3 at Fenway. We beat Texas 4 out of the last 6. This is not true the yanks dont beat good teams. First of all the Rays are not that great of a team anyway they will be battling Toronto for third place.

Greg Cohen said...

It was a good win today, now they gotta win tomorrow.

The Rays are very good. Their starting staff is great, their defense is very good, and their lineup - when healthy - is very good. Their main problem is the pen.

Anonymous said...

Just got back from the stadium fellas. This bag policy is such a croc of shit. Last time I went I brought a backpack with me, and they told me I couldnt bring it in. Simply wrapped my bag up in my sweater, put that in a plastic bag, and got myself in.

Went today with a green re-usable stop and shop bag, and was denied entry, when I saw others get in with them both times.

Meanwhile @ Citi I had no bag problems.

Some of these policies are retarded.

Great game today though, got to jaw with some Sox fans, then they shut up when they saw the sox losing. Yankees coming back was huge, made my day after the bag debacle.

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, we got a nice MASSHOLE! chant going against them, that come thru on tv? would be fuckin' great if it did.
