From
Sean Brennan:
"I have no idea," Teixeira said when asked why April has been his cruelest month. "If I did we wouldn't be standing here. I've tried everything but I don't want to start changing too much because the work that I put in, whatever struggles come early on, it turns around and turns around really well. So I'm just going to stick with my plan and try and go out there and do the job."
...
But Teixeira remained surprisingly upbeat, mostly because he knows that after the drought always comes quite the harvest.
"I've been (in an April rut) eight years in a row," Teixeira said. "It's not fun. But I put the work in, in the gym, in the (batting) cage.
"I'm doing everything I've always done and I trust that plan. The work that I put in now always pays off."
...
"I want to win every game, I want to get hits every single day, but I can't control what happened in the first eight games," Teixeira said. "You can make excuses until the cows come home and I refuse to. I'm just not getting it done.
"I'll go out there (today) and try and get some hits. We got a chance to win the series and I'm going to do my best to help the team win."
His focus seems to be more on the team, which is always good, plus he's not making excuses, which is even better. If I didn't watch the 2009 season I might be concerned about Tex, although he has been worse this year:
- After 8 games in '09: .179/.333/.464 with 2 HR and 4 RBI,
- After 8 games in '10: .097/.263/.129 with no homers and 4 RBI.
It makes little sense that a great player would just be bad for a month out of the season, and the same month almost every year, but that's the way it is and like one of the readers said to me the other day, we're going to just have to get used to this with Tex. Hopefully he does get a hit or two today and can get on a roll.
