Big Guy's 6/3 SWB Yankees Report

SWB  AAA  Yankees Game  6-3-11
SWB Yankees  4 - Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers)  3

The SWB Yankees returned home to face the Toledo Mud Hens and former Yankee Phil Coke.   The Yankees got a 4-3 walkoff win to bring their season record to 29-23.  SWB is in 2nd place, 4 games behind Lehigh Valley and 1 game ahead of 3rd place Pawtucket.

Pitching: David Phelps got the start for the Yankees.  He got into a jam in the 1st inning when the first 2 men he faced singled, but worked his way out of it.  Phelps worked out of another jam in the 4th after giving up a single and walk.  In the 6th, he gave up a solo homer to give Toledo a 1-0 lead at the time. Phelps started the 8th with the leadoff man reaching on an error.  He then gave up a 2-out single and was relieved.  Another good start for Phelps. Phelps' line:   7.2 IP,  3 runs(1 ER),  7 hits,  7 K-2 BB,  ERA 3.25,
111 Pitches--78 strikes, 7 groundouts-5 flyouts.

Eric Wordekemper relieved Phelps with 2 men on and 2 out in the 8th.  Wordekemper gave up a 2-rbi double that tied the score at 3.  He got a blown save.

Kevin Whelan came on to pitch the 9th with the score tied at 3. Whelan retired the side in order.  Whelan picked up the win (1-1).

Offense: Former Yankee Phil Coke, on a rehab assignment, got the start for Toledo.  In the 1st inning, Jesus Montero got a 2-out double off Coke but was stranded.  Dan Brewer had a 2-out double in the 2nd, but again Coke got out of the inning.  In the 3rd, Austin Krum doubled and Kevin Russo singled but they were stranded.  The Yankees scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th off Coke to take a 3-1 lead. Jesus Montero and Jorge Vasquez singled, and Brandon Laird hit a rbi double.  Jordan Parraz walked.  A fielders choice scored the 2nd run,  and Brandon Laird added a rbi single.  Kevin Russo led off the bottom of the 9th with a standup triple (4).  Toledo manager Phil Nevin then decided to load the bases by intentionally walking Jesus Montero and Jorge Vasquez. Brandon Laird then hit a walk-off rbi single on a shallow pop fly that the rightfielder apparently lost in the lights or misjudged  to give SWB a 4-3 win.

Notes: Jesus Montero went  2-4 with a double, single, run, walk, and strikeout.  This is the 3rd game in a row that David Phelps has pitched into the 8th inning. Magglio Ordonez was also playing a rehab game (0-3).
