I'm very tired tonight so I'm going with bullet points. It wasn't that interesting of a game anyway.

• Phil Hughes continues his incredible start. He pitched seven innings of one-run baseball, while scattering six hits, walking one, and striking out seven. The win improves his record to 7-1 and his ERA dropped to 2.54.

• The Yankees put this game away early scoring six times in the first three innings. Sure, they could have had a repeat performance of Saturday's debacle, but with the way Hughes was throwing the ball the chances of that were very slim.

• Robinson Cano continue his hot hitting and extended his hitting streak to 16 games. He went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBI, and three runs scored. He's now hitting .373 on the season.

• Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson also picked up three hits apiece. Swisher raised his average to .320 and knocked in three runs. Granderson drove in two.
• Francisco Cervelli and Brett Gardner also had RBIs.

• Alex Rodriguez crept closer to the .300 mark with two hits to raise his average to .297.
  

The Yankees are now 7-1 against the Orioles this season and look for the sweep tomorrow afternoon. CC Sabathia will start for the Yankees, with Kevin Millwood going for Baltimore. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. and the game will be on YES.

Wow....Blown Call Costs Armando Galarraga a Perfect Game

I know this is a Yankees blog and there's a Yankees game going on, but I had to flip on MLB.TV and check out the end of the Tigers-Indians game.

If you missed the ending or the replay on YES, Armando Galarraga was facing Indians SS Jason Donald with two out in the ninth and one out away from a perfect game. He got Donald to hit a weak grounder in between first and second, Miguel Cabrera fielded the ball and fired to Galarraga who was covering at first. He clearly beat Donald by a full step for what should have been the final out, but first base umpire Jim Joyce called the runner safe and Galarraga was robbed of the 21st perfect game in Major League Baseball history. It would have been the greatest moment of his career, but instead the 28-year-old Galarraga had to settle for a one-hitter.

Honestly, it wasn't even close. But even if it was (again, it wasn't) shouldn't the pitcher always get calls like that if it's the final out of a perfect game? Here's a couple images (via Bless You Boys) and a video of the play:


The Tigers were understandable furious after realizing the call was blown and let Joyce know about it after the second final out was recorded. I'm pissed off about this and I hate the Tigers, so I can't imagine how angry the Tigers and their fans are right now.

News & Notes

- To make room on the roster the Yankees have optioned Juan Miranda down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Apparently, they're confident that Tex if fine and can continue to play everyday, which is a good thing. But while Jorge Posada has been activated and is back in the lineup, he won't be catching anytime soon. According to Chad Jennings, Posada has not been cleared to catch during drills or in a game. Here's what Posada had to say:

“I know that I can catch and I know that I can be out there,” he said. “But a lot of circumstances have come. I’m going to have to be smart about it. If I’m in the lineup, I’m happy. I would like to catch here and there sometimes, but I understand what the future holds.”

Sounds like a guy whose days of being an everyday catcher are behind him. He also said he should be at 100% in about two or three weeks, which likely means he will be the everyday DH until at least then.

- Phil Hughes has faced the Orioles 9 times, 6 as a starter, and is 2-2, with a 5.97 ERA. He's made on start against them this year and in 5.2 innings allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 4, and struck out 2 in a no decision. Here are some of Phil's 2010 stats: FIP: 3.03, xFIP: 3.63, BABIP: .265, K/9: 9.05, BB/9: 3.12, HR/9: 0.64, GB rate: 38.3%, WAR: 1.5.

- Brad Bergesen has only faced the Yankees one time, and that came last year in a loss. He last 6.1 innnings that day and allowed 4 runs on 3 hits, walked 4, and struck out 2.

- Robinson Cano has an 15-game hitting streak. Over the course of the streak he's hitting .453/.455/.672 with 2 HR, 17 RBI, 8 doubles, and he's walked just one time.

- Derek Jeter comes into tonight with an 9-game hitting streak. He's also hit safely in 18 of his last 19, and in those 19 games has hit .369/.424/.476 with a homer, 9 RBI and 6 doubles.

- Nick Swisher is hitting .400/.455/.733 with 2 HR, 4 RBI and 4 doubles over his last seven games.

- Alex Rodriguez is hitting 337/.406/.576 with 5 HR, 7 doubles, and 24 RBI since May 7th.

With Posada Returning Russo is Probably Headed Out the Door

Jorge Posad will likely be activated prior to tonight's game against the Orioles and this creates a little bit of a problem for the Yanks. Posada will only DH at first so Chad Moeller will likely have to stay on the roster as a third catcher in case something happened to Cervelli.

The only two real options the Yankees then have is sending Kevin Russo or Juan Miranda back to Triple-A. However, with Mark Teixeira fouling that ball off his foot last night the Yankees might have to keep Miranda just in case. If the Yankees feel Tex is healthy and can continue to play everyday that would obviously change things, but I doubt that's how they feel right now, and that leaves Russo as the odd man out.

He done a pretty good job filling in while some Yankees worked their way back from injury, but after 14 games he's hitting just .222/.250/.296 and could probably use some regular at-bats in the minors. When Jorge gets back to catching every day the Yanks will then designate Chad Moeller for assignment and then recall Russo.

We'll find out for sure later today, but I think this is the move the Yankees will make.

New York Yankees All Time Tournament Coming Soon!

Starting next week (or maybe sooner, if all the database files get compiled correctly), we will be running a fantasy tournament of epic proportions!

This tourney will pit every team from the history of the New York Yankees, from their days as the Highlanders in 1903, all the way to the world championship of 2009!

We will be ranking all the teams in order to diversify the pool correctly, and all stat modifiers will be set to normalize everything. All rounds of this tournament will be 7 game series, and played in neutral parks in order to even out everything as well.

This simulation will be run with Out Of The Park Baseball 11.
