Jose Molina strained his left hamstring in tonight's game, and will probably go on the DL. The Yankees will likely call up Chad Moeller to replace him on the roster. With Jorge Posada still unable to throw, look for Moeller to start tomorrow in Tampa.
It's really a shame; Molina has been one of this team's best hitters, hitting .364 with 7 doubles, and he's a great defensive catcher.

I wouldn't call him a great defensive catcher, but he is def a good one. (better than Posada) but last night he costed us atleast 2 runs by being not being able to block 2 passed balls with runners on 3rd. It may even have been 3 runs he costed us, but I'm not sure if the runner eventually came around to score when he threw the ball to Johnny Damon in CF on a pitchout. Regardless, Yanks will miss his bat considering Posada looks lost hitting left handed and hasn't hit consitantly since last September.
Those past balls happened because he got crossed up on the signals with Hughes. You can't catch something that you don't know is coming. For example; one pitch was supposed to be a low fastball and Hughes threw a curve, it's very very hard to adjust to that.
The pitch out was also thrown very poorly by Hughes.
I think Molina is pretty damn good behind the plate.
Anyway, yes, he will be missed. Hopefully he's not out too long.
Molina definitely cost the Yanks a few runs with his passed balls last night. His arm was better than the ailing Posada's. Too bad Cervelli broke his wrist during the spring. The Yankees are really hurting for catchers right now. Chad Moeller isn't a great option, with a weak bat and a weak arm, but he's all they have at the moment.
I expect to see some movement by the front office soon. The Yanks have needs behind the plate, starters like Hughes who might need some time in the minors and a dearth of DHs. If they could unload Giambi, Damon or Duncan to someone in need of a bat or perhaps deal Hawkins or Farnsworth to Detroit, they might be able to fill a need or two.
Jeff,
They were cross ups with Hughes. That's why they were past balls.
They'll survive with Moeller for a couple days, they just need Posada to get back there everyday.
They're not doing anything with Giambi or Damon - they have way too much money invested in them. May not be the wisest move on their part, but I can't see them doing anything.
It would be nice if they dumped both of them and brought up Gardner and Duncan. I think the team would be a lot better off that way, but again, it ain't happening.
Farnsworth could go, because as crazy as it may seem, there are teams that would probably take his arm if the Yanks paid most of his salary. Hawkins has actually been a lot better and I'd like to see the Yankees keep him around.
Hawkins definitely has looked much better in his last few games. I was down on him early but he bounced back. The one thing in the back of my mind is how will he perform at Yankee Stadium. He bombed in 2 of his 3 home appearances. The BS crowd booing (over the #21 jersey) may have been getting to him.
If the fans can give him a chance, he might work out. If they continue to boo and he struggles at home, I'm not sure he'll last.
Well as long as he gets adjusted to the "Paul O'Neill" chants he'll be fine. The booing has seemed to stop.
I agree, though, if they boo he's not going to last.
